Real Repair
In August 2026, we repaired a Bertazzoni 36-inch gas rangetop in La Jolla whose igniters kept sparking even with the burners off. We diagnosed the ignition system and replaced the spark module. We tested every burner to confirm that it lights on demand and the clicking stops once the flame is established.

Local notes · San Diego County
Bertazzoni has built cookers in Guastalla, Italy, since 1882, and the US has been its largest market since 2012. Owners here love the Professional, Master and Heritage ranges, but repairs carry one planning problem most brands don't: some parts ship from Italy. US owners have reported waiting more than six weeks for an oven temperature selector and about three months for back-ordered inner door glass. Common parts are stocked by US distributors. The difference between a short and a long repair is usually an exact diagnosis and the right part number on the first order.
A Bertazzoni gas range protects each burner with a thermocouple flame-failure device, and each burner lights from a ceramic spark electrode. Both are small, exposed parts. Within a few miles of the ocean, damp May Gray mornings and salt-laden air corrode electrode tips and dull thermocouple contacts, so burners click longer or drop out when the knob is released. Inland the pressure is heat. Valley homes in La Mesa and El Cajon see August highs in the upper 80s, and a Bertazzoni oven's cooling fan keeps running after shutdown to protect the controls; a hot kitchen makes that fan work harder and exposes worn bearings sooner. Water matters for the rest of the lineup. Across the county, tap hardness runs from about 9 to 16 grains per gallon, and the 24-inch Bertazzoni dishwasher throws E1 when a scaled inlet valve screen slows filling. Its manual calls for 120 F inlet water, which is harder to hit in homes with long pipe runs. Refrigerator ice makers suffer the same scale in valves and fill tubes.
Symptom: Flame catches while you hold the knob in, then goes out a few seconds after you let go. Cause: The thermocouple is not generating enough signal to hold the safety magnet in the valve open, from a dirty or weak tip or a failing magnet. Fix: Clean and position the thermocouple, then test output and replace it or the valve magnet. Never bypass flame-failure safety.
Symptom: Oven won't reach set temperature, overshoots, or the selector does nothing. Cause: A failed temperature control selector or thermostat. This is the part one US owner waited more than six weeks to receive from Italy. Fix: Confirm by testing before ordering, source domestically when a distributor stocks it, and set expectations if it must come from the factory.
Symptom: Freezer fine but fridge warm, or the reverse, sometimes with a temperature alarm. Cause: Bertazzoni refrigerators use dual variable-speed compressors with separate evaporators, so a fan, defrost part, sensor or compressor on one side fails on its own. Fix: Diagnose the affected circuit only. Sealed-system work is quoted separately after testing.
Symptom: Cycle stops with E4 and the pump may run to drain. Cause: Water in the base pan has tripped the float, from a hose, sump seal or door seal leak, or a clogged drain. Fix: Find and fix the leak, dry the base, and clear the drain path before resetting.
With some Bertazzoni parts weeks away, prevention pays more than usual. On the range, keep spills off burner caps and electrodes, and let everything dry fully after cleaning before relighting. Avoid thermal shock to the oven glass; don't spray cool cleaner onto a hot door. On panel-ready refrigerator columns, heavy custom panels can sag hinges over time, so check door alignment and gaskets. The dishwasher needs clear spray arms and rinse aid in hard water.
Because a wrong part can mean weeks of waiting, the model and serial number matter more here than with most brands. On ranges, the rating plate is usually near the storage drawer or behind the kick panel; on refrigerators and dishwashers, inside the door edge or liner. Photograph it, along with any display alert. Tell us whether the range is gas or dual fuel and which series it is. If you smell gas, leave the house and call SDG&E before booking any repair.
Most Bertazzoni repairs involve igniters, thermocouples, valves, selectors, fans, gaskets and seals, and those are well worth doing on a range that otherwise has decades of life. The trade-off is time, not usually cost. If a part is on long factory back order, we will tell you the expected wait so you can decide whether to wait or move on. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
