An ice maker is a small water system bolted to a refrigeration system, and in San Diego County the water side usually fails first. Hard water leaves scale on fill-valve screens and freezing plates. Low pressure from a clogged filter makes hollow cubes. We repair both kinds of ice makers: the module inside a refrigerator freezer or door, and standalone undercounter clear-ice and nugget machines in kitchens, bars and outdoor kitchens. A quick look at the water supply often explains a problem that looks like a broken part.

Minerals, Pressure and Patio Heat

Almost all tap water in the county is hard. The City of San Diego's 2025 report lists 237 to 243 mg/L, roughly 14 grains per gallon, and most other districts fall somewhere between about 9 and 16 grains. That matters most for standalone clear-ice machines. They make clear ice by running water over a chilled plate, which leaves minerals behind in the water pan; that mineral-laden water drains each cycle, but scale still builds on the plate and in the water system over time. Output falls, sheets come out thin, and cubes turn cloudy. Refrigerator ice makers feel the minerals at the fill-valve inlet screen, which narrows and slows the fill. Water pressure is the other variable. Whirlpool specifies 30 to 120 psi for its refrigerator ice makers, ideally 40 to 80, and 40 to 60 with reverse osmosis systems. A depleted RO tank under the sink can starve the ice maker too. Outdoor kitchens bring their own limits. KitchenAid notes that production drops when the room tops 90 F, and near the ocean, salt air corrodes the condenser and cabinet of patio units.

KitchenAid calls for cleaning its clear-ice machines when the indicator lights, about every nine months, or when output drops. With water as hard as most of the county's, plan on the short end of that interval and clean the condenser at the same time. Use only cleaners the manufacturer approves; the wrong chemical can damage nickel-plated evaporators. For refrigerator ice makers, the filter is the main job.

• Every 6 months: replace the refrigerator water filter.
• Every 6-9 months in hard-water areas: clean an undercounter clear-ice machine and discard the first batch.
• Every 3 months with pets: brush lint and hair off the front grille of undercounter units.
• Before leaving a second home: shut off the water, drain and dry the machine.

What to Have Ready for an Ice Maker Call

Tell us whether the ice maker is inside a refrigerator or a standalone unit, and give us its model and serial number. Refrigerator tags are usually inside the fresh-food section; undercounter machines have them behind the grille or inside the door. Repair Math for Ice Makers

A refrigerator ice maker module is usually a modest, quick swap, so repair almost always wins. Standalone clear-ice machines are typically worth repairing too: grids, pumps, valves and sensors cost far less than a new machine and fit the existing cabinet opening. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older unit, where the compressor or a refrigerant leak can make replacement the better value.
