Local notes · San Diego County
Fisher & Paykel started in New Zealand and has been majority-owned by Haier since 2012, which makes it a corporate cousin of GE Appliances. It builds products unlike anyone else's. The DishDrawer splits a dishwasher into sliding drawers, each with its own motor, pump and lid. ActiveSmart refrigerators report faults by counting beeps. The professional ranges carry DNA from DCS, the U.S. maker F&P bought in 2004. And some San Diego homes still run F&P SmartDrive washers, even though the brand no longer sells laundry here. Repairing this brand well means knowing those designs.
Fisher & Paykel's compact, electronics-heavy designs react to our conditions in specific ways. The DishDrawer's small heater and wash rotor sit in water that is hard almost everywhere in the county; 2025 reports put Helix at 206 mg/L and Sweetwater at 193 mg/L, and City of San Diego plants higher still. Scale builds on the heater plate and in the rotor housing, and the drawer's lid seal hardens with mineral film. Induction cooktops and wall ovens depend on cooling fans, and cabinet heat matters. Inland kitchens run warm when valley highs pass 85°F in August, and a hot, tight cabinet shortens the life of induction power boards and oven power modules. On the coast, the marine layer brings damp, salty air that corrodes spark electrodes on gas cooktops and the condenser on freestanding ActiveSmart refrigerators. Legacy SmartDrive washers carry their motor control module under the tub, and moisture is a known contributor to its failure; a damp coastal garage or a leaking hose raises that risk. Pet hair and Santa Ana dust clog refrigerator condensers everywhere.
Symptom: One drawer stops with F1, or shows U2 or F5 and won't start because the lid can't seal. Cause: F1 typically means water or foam has reached the base, often from a lid seal, hose or heater plate seal. U2 and F5 usually point to the lid motor or actuator. Fix: We trace the leak, replace the seal or lid motor, and check the flexing wiring harness for chafe.
Symptom: The refrigerator beeps in a repeating count or flashes an LED pattern, and cooling may drop. Cause: The count is the fault number. Fault 1 is the electronic module, Fault 2 the defrost system, and Fault 13 an open ambient heater. Fix: We confirm the count, test the named circuit and replace the module, defrost part or heater.
Symptom: On OB30 models, F7 blocks self-clean or leaves the door locked; the cooling fan may also run long after cooking. Cause: A jammed lock, door switch or sensor fault triggers F7. The fan is designed to run until the cavity drops below 300°F, but a stuck triac on the power module keeps it on. Fix: We free and test the lock, switch and sensor, then replace the fan or power module.
Symptom: A slapping noise during spin, or numeric codes that stop the wash. Cause: Rotor magnet adhesive can let go after about ten years, and the motor control module fails with moisture exposure. Fix: We replace the rotor or module after confirming the parts are still obtainable.
Clean each DishDrawer filter and keep rinse aid topped up; the harder your water, the more often. Give induction cooktops and wall ovens the ventilation gaps shown in the install guide, and don't block toe-kick or cabinet vents. Vacuum the condenser on freestanding refrigerators. For older SmartDrive washers, fix any hose drip right away to keep water off the motor control module. Coastal owners should dry gas burner parts well. If a DishDrawer sits unused for weeks, run a rinse to rewet the lid seal.
Write down the model and serial number, and count the beeps or note the code shown. For a double DishDrawer, tell us which drawer faults, top or bottom. Empty that drawer and clear the sink cabinet. For wall ovens, let the oven cool fully so the technician can pull it from the cabinet if needed. Coastal condo buildings may need an elevator reservation or parking pass; gated communities, a gate code. The $99 diagnostic is credited when you approve the repair.
A double DishDrawer with one bad drawer is usually repaired: lid motors, seals, pumps and harnesses are all replaceable, and a new unit may need cabinet work. Column refrigerators and pro ranges are built in and costly to replace, so repair is favored. Legacy laundry is the exception. With no current U.S. laundry line, part availability decides, and a failed rotor or MCM on a ten-year-old washer often tips toward replacement.
