Many San Diego County freezers don't live in the kitchen. They sit in garages, next to the water heater and the dryer, where summer heat and dust work against them. A freezer only moves heat from inside the box to the room around it. When that room is hot, the compressor runs longer and capacity drops. We service chest freezers, frost-free and manual-defrost uprights, and built-in column and drawer freezers, from Whirlpool and GE to Sub-Zero and Liebherr, and we check the location as carefully as the machine.

Garage Heat Inland, Corrosion at the Coast

Inland valleys are the hardest places in the county to keep a garage freezer happy. El Cajon's average August high is about 88.6 F, and its hottest late-summer day typically reaches around 100 F. A closed garage gets hotter still. Standard freezers are designed for indoor rooms; garage-ready models are rated for wider ranges, such as GE's 0 to 110 F rating for its garage-ready uprights and chests. A standard unit in a hot garage runs almost nonstop, and its start relay and compressor pay for it. Near the coast, the risk is slower. Damp, salty air corrodes exposed condenser tubing, fan motors and hinges, and chest freezers with skin condensers built into their walls can rust from the bottom up. Heat waves add a third problem. During the September 2024 heat wave, SDG&E set a record peak demand of 5,032 MW, and grid stress can bring sags and outages that leave freezers thawing. Santa Ana winds, meanwhile, blow dust into garages that coats condenser coils. Pet hair and dryer lint nearby make it worse.

What Usually Goes Wrong With a Freezer

Keeping a Freezer at 0 F Year-Round

Hold the freezer at 0 F and confirm it with an appliance thermometer rather than the dial. Defrost manual-defrost models when frost reaches a quarter to half an inch thick, and never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver. Keep the unit out of direct sun and away from the water heater. If the power goes out, keep the door closed: a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.

• Every 6 months, or every 3 in a dusty garage or with pets: vacuum the condenser coil and grille.
• Before summer inland: clear 2-3 inches around the cabinet and check the garage rating on the label.
• Once a year: close the lid or door on a sheet of paper; if it slides out easily, the gasket needs attention.
• Vacation homes: add a remote temperature alarm so an outage doesn't go unnoticed.

Preparing for a Freezer Service Visit

Tell us whether it's a chest, upright or built-in freezer, plus the model and serial number from the label inside the lid or door. Note the thermometer reading and what you've heard: clicking, humming or silence. If food is at risk, move it to coolers or a working freezer before we arrive. Garage units need a clear path so we can pull them out and reach the back. Built-in freezers are serviced in place, usually through the front grille.

Freezer Repair or a New Unit?

Relay, thermostat, defrost and fan repairs are usually worth doing on any freezer. The decision gets harder with sealed-system failures. On an inexpensive chest freezer, a leak inside the walls usually tips the math toward replacement. Built-in and column freezers are the opposite: they are nearly always repaired, because they cost far more and are fitted to your cabinets.
