LG cooktops
LG's US cooktop line runs from SmoothTouch radiant tops to the LG STUDIO 36-inch induction with its flex zone. The display message owners see most - HS - is not a fault at all: it is the hot-surface indicator, and LG documents it. Real faults arrive as F-codes that LG resolves per model, and we read them the same way.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
30 and 36-inch radiant electric cooktops with triple elements, warming zone and SmoothTouch controls.
The 36-inch CBIS3618B induction top with the 11-inch dual center zone and flex cooking zone.
Professional-style gas cooktops in the STUDIO line - mechanical burners, spark ignition.
Touch controls mean liquid on the panel can mimic faults - a service reality worth knowing.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Pan detection and overheat protection first, module second - the honest order.
Liquid, lock mode and panel condition before any part - SmoothTouch reality.
Element winding and its switch - measured directly.
Moisture and cap seating - dry and reseat before parts.
Stop using the top; replacement is quoted honestly against unit value.
Supply and module isolation - measured, and taken seriously.
Series and model numbers
Three technologies, one plate discipline: the model from the underside label decides which diagnostic world - element, module or valve - the visit enters.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; the installation paperwork carries a duplicate. Photograph it if accessible - otherwise the visit reads it during service. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
LG diagnostics
HS as a non-fault hot-surface indicator is official LG documentation, as is the F-plus-number code format. Per-code cooktop meanings are model-specific in LG's system, so no invented universal table is published here.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for LG cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
From established west-side streets to Otay Ranch's new communities, Chula Vista runs every appliance generation - big families, big laundry loads and builder suites hitting their first repairs.
South Bay and East County bring summer heat, hard water and hard-working family appliances - practical repairs with strong parts availability are the local priority.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Chula Vista
Chula Vista households average about 3.1 people, among the largest in the county, and it shows on the stovetop. Big pots, long simmers and frequent boil-overs are normal in a family kitchen, and they are exactly what LG touch controls and gas burner igniters dislike. Add eastern neighborhoods from the Eastlake and Otay Ranch build-out whose kitchens are now old enough to need parts, plus older bayside homes on the west side, and the city keeps a steady list of cooktop problems for us to solve.
Cooking volume comes first. When a stove feeds three or more people every day, spills on the control strip and water under burner caps are routine. The second factor is age. Roughly a third of the city's homes were built in 2000 or later, many in master-planned communities like Eastlake (begun 1986), Rancho del Rey (1989), Otay Ranch (begun 1999) and Millenia. Kitchens from that wave are now old enough that original cooktops, or their first replacements, need switches, igniters and elements. Western neighborhoods such as Castle Park and the original town west of Hilltop Drive are older still. Water differs by side of town: Otay Water District's east-side system reported 9.4 grains per gallon for 2025, while Sweetwater Authority, which serves the west and center, reported 193 mg/L. Either supply leaves mineral residue when a pot boils over onto hot glass. Finally, the bay. Humid, salty air near the Bayfront speeds corrosion of exposed metal, and igniter tips and burner bases are exactly that. Farther inland, September is the month to watch, with a mean monthly maximum around 92°F.
Symptom: The keypad stops responding, beeps, or shuts the cooktop off while a pot is still going. Cause: Liquid pooled on the touch area registers as a key press, so the control shuts down for safety. Years of repeated moisture can also damage the touch board. Fix: Wipe and dry the panel, wait a minute, then restart. Faults that remain on a clean, dry surface point to the touch board, which we test and replace.
Symptom: Igniters keep sparking after the flame catches, or one burner clicks without ever lighting. Cause: Wet or misaligned burner caps after a boil-over, a dirty electrode, moisture inside a burner switch, or a failing spark module. Fix: Dry and reseat the caps and clean the electrode. If the clicking continues once everything is dry, we trace it to the switch or module and replace that part.
Symptom: On an LG smoothtop, one element won't glow at any setting, or it only heats on high. Sometimes the glass above it has cracked. Cause: An open element or a failed control switch, both typical as 2000s-era kitchens age; cracks come from impact or thermal shock. Fix: We test the element and the switch separately so you replace only what failed. A cracked top gets a new glass assembly.
Symptom: The zone indicator flashes and power never comes on. Cause: Non-magnetic or undersized cookware in most cases. When a proper pan also fails, the coil or generator board has a fault. Fix: Try a magnetic pan that covers the ring. If that pan still fails, we test the coil and board output before recommending a part.
The cheapest cooktop repair is the one a dry cloth prevents. Wipe the control area every time you wipe the glass, and don't drape a wet dish towel over the edge where it drips onto the keys. On gas models, pull the caps after a boil-over, dry them and set them back squarely; a cap sitting crooked is a frequent reason for clicking. Homes close to the bay should look at igniter tips a few times a year for green or white corrosion.
Tell us whether the cooktop is gas, induction or radiant, and which burner or zone misbehaves, since parts and test tools differ. Many east-side neighborhoods have gates or HOA parking rules; include those when you schedule. The model and serial number are usually on a label under the cooktop, and a photo of it saves time. Please clear the counter around the unit. If you ever smell gas, get everyone outside, call SDG&E from there, and book the repair only after the utility has checked the line.
For a cooktop that has served an east-side home for 15 years or more, a single igniter, switch or element is still usually worth fixing. The balance shifts when an induction model needs a generator board and a glass top together, or when a radiant top is cracked and other parts are also wearing out. After testing, we'll tell you which components failed and whether the repair makes sense for that cooktop's age and condition.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Hot surface - not an error. It stays on until the glass cools below roughly 150F. Only an HS that never clears on a cold top merits service.
LG resolves cooktop F-codes per model rather than in one public table. Photograph the code; the visit reads it against your exact model's service data.
On the underside of the cooktop, from the cabinet below - or on the installation paperwork's duplicate label.
No - the STUDIO gas tops are mechanical with spark ignition. Diagnosis is direct: electrodes, modules, valves.
Pan material and diameter first - induction needs ferrous cookware of sufficient size. If proper pans go undetected, the zone's sensor and module are tested.
Moisture near a burner or inside a switch can make the spark system think a burner is still calling for ignition. Let the cooktop dry completely, with the caps off, for a few hours. If the clicking continues once everything is dry, a switch or the spark module most likely needs to be replaced.
Yes. Induction only works with magnetic cookware large enough to cover most of the zone. Aluminum, copper and some thin stainless pans won't register, and a small saucepan on a large ring may be ignored. Hold a fridge magnet to the bottom; if it sticks firmly, the pan should work.
For a cooktop, only a little. Both supplies are hard, so boiled-over water leaves white deposits on the glass either way. Clean them off once the surface cools, before they bake on again. Your water district matters much more for the dishwasher, ice maker and washer.
LG cooktop codes vary by model, so note exactly what the display shows, which zone it relates to and what you were cooking at the time. Check the manual for your model. Then send us that information with the model number so the technician can bring the likely parts.
