LG cooktops
LG's US cooktop line runs from SmoothTouch radiant tops to the LG STUDIO 36-inch induction with its flex zone. The display message owners see most - HS - is not a fault at all: it is the hot-surface indicator, and LG documents it. Real faults arrive as F-codes that LG resolves per model, and we read them the same way.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

The 36-inch CBIS3618B induction top with the 11-inch dual center zone and flex cooking zone.
Professional-style gas cooktops in the STUDIO line - mechanical burners, spark ignition.
Touch controls mean liquid on the panel can mimic faults - a service reality worth knowing.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Pan detection and overheat protection first, module second - the honest order.
Liquid, lock mode and panel condition before any part - SmoothTouch reality.
Element winding and its switch - measured directly.
Moisture and cap seating - dry and reseat before parts.
Stop using the top; replacement is quoted honestly against unit value.
Supply and module isolation - measured, and taken seriously.
Series and model numbers
Three technologies, one plate discipline: the model from the underside label decides which diagnostic world - element, module or valve - the visit enters.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; the installation paperwork carries a duplicate. Photograph it if accessible - otherwise the visit reads it during service. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
LG diagnostics
HS as a non-fault hot-surface indicator is official LG documentation, as is the F-plus-number code format. Per-code cooktop meanings are model-specific in LG's system, so no invented universal table is published here.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for LG cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway calls itself the City in the Country, and the country part reaches the kitchen. Horse properties, dirt trails and dry Santa Ana winds carry fine dust indoors, and the 2003 Cedar and 2007 Witch Creek fires, which forced large evacuations here, left residents familiar with ash on every surface. For an LG cooktop, that dust matters in two places: the cooling fan that keeps induction electronics alive, and the small ports and electrodes on gas burners. Summer heat, with August highs around 84°F, adds load to both.
Most of Poway's homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and about three quarters are single-family houses, many of them large four-bedroom family homes. Plenty of those kitchens have been updated with an LG induction, radiant or gas cooktop set into the original counter. An induction unit draws cabinet air across its generator board with a small fan. Near the Poway Equestrian Center or the city's 78-plus miles of trails, that air carries fine dirt, hay debris and pet dander, and a fan that ingests it for years slows down. A hot inland afternoon during the July-to-September hot season shrinks the margin further, and the cooktop starts throttling power to protect itself. Santa Ana winds, strongest inland and blowing between September and April, drop humidity sharply and push dust through every gap in the house. After a smoke event, fine ash settles on gas burner ports and spark electrodes, where it can cause weak, uneven flames and slow ignition. The water is very hard as well, averaging 236 mg/L in the city's 2024 report, and the city itself notes that calcium leaves white spots; on a glass cooktop that means stubborn boil-over rings.
Symptom: Zones drop to a low setting or switch off during long high-heat cooking, and the fan sounds strained. Cause: A cooling fan loaded with dust, hair and dander, blocked cabinet airflow, or a hot kitchen on a summer afternoon. Fix: We clean the air path, check clearance under the cooktop and test the fan. A fan that has slowed or seized gets replaced.
Symptom: Long clicking before ignition, a flame that burns yellow or lifts on one side, or a burner that won't light at all. Cause: Ash in the burner ports, a coated electrode, a wet or misaligned cap, a damp switch, or a failing spark module. Fix: Clean the ports and electrode and reseat the cap. If ignition is still poor, we test the switch and module and replace the failed part.
Symptom: The induction zone flashes and turns off with a pot in place. Cause: Cookware that isn't magnetic or is too small for the ring; otherwise a coil or generator board fault. Fix: Check the pan with a magnet and use one that covers the ring. When a correct pan still fails, we test the coil and board output.
Symptom: Controls are sluggish or dead, or the cooktop shuts down unexpectedly. Cause: Spills or water on the touch panel, or a touch board that has failed. Fix: Clean and dry the panel and restart. If the fault stays on a clean surface, the touch board is replaced after testing.
Think of an induction cooktop as a device that breathes, and a gas cooktop as one that needs clear airways. Keeping the air path clean and the burners open does more than any cleaner. In homes with horses, dogs or cats, vacuum the area below an induction unit regularly, since pet hair and barn dust collect there. After a Santa Ana episode or a smoke day, wipe the cooktop and lift the gas caps to check the ports. Clear clogged ports with a straightened paper clip rather than a toothpick, which can snap off inside.
Poway homes are mostly detached houses with driveways, but some properties sit along private or dirt roads; share directions and gate details when you book. The technician will want the cabinet below the cooktop emptied, because fan, board and wiring checks happen from underneath on many models. Have the model and serial number, the cooktop type and a description of when the fault shows up: first thing in the morning, after 20 minutes on high, only on hot days. That pattern often points straight at the cause. If you smell gas, leave the house and call SDG&E first.
Cleaning or replacing a cooling fan is one of the more affordable induction repairs, and once airflow is restored it often ends overheating for good. Igniters, switches and radiant elements are also routine work. When a dust-damaged generator board and a scratched or cracked glass top are both involved on an older unit, replacement can make more sense. Our diagnosis tells you which parts are at fault so the choice is straightforward.

We take requests across Poway (ZIP 92064, 92074). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Hot surface - not an error. It stays on until the glass cools below roughly 150F. Only an HS that never clears on a cold top merits service.
LG resolves cooktop F-codes per model rather than in one public table. Photograph the code; the visit reads it against your exact model's service data.
On the underside of the cooktop, from the cabinet below - or on the installation paperwork's duplicate label.
No - the STUDIO gas tops are mechanical with spark ignition. Diagnosis is direct: electrodes, modules, valves.
Pan material and diameter first - induction needs ferrous cookware of sufficient size. If proper pans go undetected, the zone's sensor and module are tested.
The electronics protect themselves when internal temperature climbs. A hot kitchen, a dusty cooling fan or blocked cabinet airflow can each push them past that limit. If it happens mainly in summer and during long, high-heat cooking, check the fan and the airflow before suspecting a board.
Ash rarely causes permanent damage, but it can clog burner ports and coat spark electrodes, leading to uneven flames or slow lighting. Once the air clears, clean the grates, caps and burner heads. If flames stay yellow or uneven after cleaning, schedule service.
It can. Hair and dander collect wherever a fan pulls air, including the intake under an induction cooktop. Over time that restricts airflow and wears the fan. Regular vacuuming of the area below the unit helps, especially in homes with long-haired dogs or indoor cats.
That depends on your electrical panel, cabinet space and cooking style. Induction needs a dedicated high-amperage circuit and enough airflow below the unit. We repair both types and can point out what your kitchen would need, but new circuits are work for a licensed electrician.
