Maytag dryers
Maytag dryers - MED electric, MGD gas - trade on heavy-duty motors and 10-year limited drive parts warranties, with a small, well-documented code set: F01, F02, AF and PF cover most of what the display will ever tell you. The rest is airflow physics, and San Diego lint proves it daily.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
7.0 and 7.3 cu ft dryers with Extra Power boost and Wrinkle Prevent.
Steam-enhanced cycles and advanced moisture sensing.
The XL lint trap system built for pet hair - paired with the Pet Pro washer.
Earlier platforms still drying across the county, serviced by their own code sets.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Electric: element and thermal fuse. Gas: igniter, flame sensor, valve coils - split by the model prefix.
Airflow first - vent run, lint screen seating, moisture sensor after.
Door switch, thermal fuse and start circuit - in documented order.
Drum rollers, idler and belt - the mechanical trio, all stocked parts.
Overheating protection - usually the vent, occasionally the cycling thermostat.
The Pet Pro XL trap needs its own cleaning routine - shown during the visit.
Series and model numbers
Electric or gas is the first fork in every no-heat call - the third letter of the model number answers it before the visit.
Model label
The model and serial plate is inside the door opening on the front panel - open the door and look at the recess edge. Photograph the full plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Maytag diagnostics
F01, F02, AF and PF all carry official Maytag product-help documentation. Legacy Bravos-era dryers use their own two-character codes - identified from the model before any decoding.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Maytag dryers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: airflow, heat, cycle behavior, drum condition, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves dryers across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how dryers age here.
Drying complaints in La Jolla are shaped by two local facts: long, tight vent runs in multi-story Village buildings, and humid coastal air that stretches cycle times even on healthy machines. Ventless condenser and heat-pump dryers - common in European-styled remodels - add their own diagnostic logic. We measure airflow first, because in this area a restricted duct imitates a broken heater more often than not.
Multi-story buildings often have long, tight duct paths. Airflow is measured first - many вАЬno heatвАЭ complaints are really restricted vents.
Near the ocean, ambient humidity stretches drying times. The visit separates a real fault from environment and venting.
European-style condenser and heat-pump dryers are common in La Jolla remodels and are serviced on their own diagnostic logic.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
On a La Jolla block near the surf, a Maytag dryer is often only as good as the metal flap on the outside wall. Salt spray corrodes vent hoods on this headland, and a flap that sticks half shut chokes airflow no matter how clean the lint screen is. From May through August the marine layer keeps mornings cool and damp, and beach towels and surf gear arrive soaked and sandy. So when a La Jolla dryer runs long or quits heating, we check the path the air takes out of the house before we condemn a part.
Maytag's current dryers share Whirlpool's airflow design: a blower on the motor pulls room air across the heater, through the drum and lint screen, and pushes it out a 4-inch duct. The system tolerates only so much resistance, and La Jolla's housing tends to add it. Since Prop D in 1972, most coastal-zone buildings west of I-5 are capped at 30 feet, so the typical home is a low-rise house or small multifamily building where the laundry can sit deep inside. Older high-rise condos such as 939 Coast Blvd, built in 1966 before the limit, send exhaust through long interior runs toward the exterior. Surviving beach cottages from the early 1900s were never planned for a dryer at all, so any duct added later may snake through several bends. Then add the ocean. Salt air corrodes exterior hood flaps and fasteners so they bind, and sand carried home from Windansea or the Shores gets past the screen and settles in the blower wheel. Average coastal humidity of roughly 63 to 75 percent keeps metal damp for hours, which is why a hood here corrodes faster than one a few miles inland.
Symptom: Cycles run long, the laundry room gets warm and the Check Vent light or AF code appears even after the screen is emptied. Cause: A corroded exterior hood flap stuck partly closed, lint packed on the louvers, or a long condo duct run with too many elbows for the dryer's rated limit. Fix: We measure airflow at the hood, free or replace a corroded cap with a new one, and clean the duct end to end.
Symptom: Heat works after a repair, then quits again within weeks. Cause: The thermal cut-off and thermal fuse are safety devices. They open when exhaust runs too hot, so repeat failures almost always point back to restricted airflow, not bad parts. Fix: We replace the open device and correct the vent restriction so the fix holds. On a gas unit, if you notice any gas odor, leave and call SDG&E first.
Symptom: A gritty grind or rumble that gets worse over weeks, sometimes with a scraping sound at the front of the drum. Cause: Beach sand abrading the front glides and collecting in the blower housing, which unbalances the blower wheel. Fix: We open the cabinet, clear sand from the blower and housing, and replace worn glides, rollers or the blower wheel.
Symptom: A steady squeal or scrape on a dryer that predates the Whirlpool merger. Cause: Some pre-2006 Maytag-design dryers remain in older homes. They use their own front glides and rear rollers, which wear with age. Fix: We confirm the design from the model and serial number and fit glides and rollers made for it.
In an oceanfront home the outside of the vent needs as much attention as the inside. Open the lint screen every load, but also walk outside while the dryer runs and feel for strong exhaust at the hood. Shake sand from towels and swimwear before they go in. If the house sits empty between stays, check the hood for nests before the first load. Pet owners should expect more lint and clean the screen and vent more often.
Village street parking is time-limited and enforced, and La Jolla Shores streets fill up with beach traffic, so tell us about driveway space or guest parking when you book. In high-rise condos, ask the HOA about elevator reservations and whether we need to reach the roof or a shared vent chase. Have the Maytag model and serial numbers ready from the label in the door opening, describe the symptom and when it started, and send a photo of the outside vent cap if you can reach it safely.
Nearly all dryer failures here are airflow and wear parts: hoods, fuses, cut-offs, glides and rollers. Those are low-to-mid cost jobs and well worth doing. The picture changes if salt has rusted through the drum or cabinet, or if an aging unit needs a control board on top of other work. Our $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair, and we will tell you plainly if the numbers favor replacing.

No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Restricted airflow - officially. The vent run is the usual cause: lint screen, duct, outside flap. If the code survives a clean vent path, the blower and sensor get tested.
Electric models: heating element or thermal cutoff. Gas models: igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. The model prefix tells us which kit to bring.
Inside the door opening on the front panel - visible when the door is open.
Not by itself - it records a power interruption. Repeated PF codes with stable house power merit a look at the cord and connections.
Yes - including the XL lint trap system, which has its own cleaning and airflow service points.
Run the dryer and go outside. You should feel a steady, warm stream of air and see the flap lift fully. If the flap barely moves, or you see rust on the hinge or louvers, airflow is restricted. On the coast these hoods corrode faster, so replacing a stuck one is usually the right call.
Condo dryers often exhaust through a long duct with several turns before reaching the outside wall or roof. Each bend reduces the allowable length. Once lint builds up, the run can exceed what the dryer handles. A duct cleaning and airflow check usually tells us whether the route itself needs changes.
It does not harm the internals directly. But damp air keeps exterior metal wet longer, which speeds corrosion of the vent hood, and damp beach loads carry more sand. Those two effects are why coastal dryers need the outside hood checked more often.
Yes. Older cottages often have dryers in tight closets or add-on laundry spaces with retrofitted ducts. We check clearance and the duct route, and we point out if a foil or plastic transition should be replaced with rigid or semi-rigid metal, as the CPSC recommends.
