Monogram cooktops
Monogram cooktops split cleanly into two service worlds: ZHU induction tops whose displays flash real, documented alerts, and ZGU professional gas tops with brass burners and no electronics beyond ignition. Knowing which world your cooktop lives in decides the whole diagnosis.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Earlier ZHU30RSJSS-class tops - same alert language, earlier boards.
ZGU30RSLSS and ZGU36RSLSS deep-recessed gas tops with sealed burners.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Cookware first, sensing circuit second - the honest order the manual itself implies.
Generator board and element wiring for that zone - tested directly.
Moisture, cap seating, then electrode and spark module.
Water under the caps - dried and reseated before any part is blamed.
Cracked induction glass means stop using the top - replacement is quoted against the unit's value.
Control lock first, then the touch board - photograph the display before resetting.
Series and model numbers
ZHU means induction and a real alert dialect; ZGU means gas and direct diagnosis - the prefix is the triage.
Model label
The rating plate is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below. Photograph the full model and serial - induction board revisions track the serial, not just the model. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Monogram diagnostics
Induction alerts come from Monogram's own ZHU owner's documentation - flashing F for pan detection, letter alerts for electronics faults. Monogram publishes no per-code decode beyond that, and none is invented here. Gas ZGU tops have no codes at all.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Monogram cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway calls itself the City in the Country, and the country gets into the kitchen. Horses use more than 78 miles of city trails. Dirt roads still run through the equestrian parcels. Fine dust drifts in through open doors on hot, dry days. A Monogram cooktop pulls some of that dust in. It builds up on induction cooling fans and in gas burner ports, and it shortens the life of both. We repair Monogram cooktops and rangetops in Green Valley, Old Coach Estates, Rancho Arbolitos, Garden Road and the rest of 92064.
The typical Poway summer is dry. August highs average around 84°F, the hot season runs from about July into late September, and muggy days are rare. The dry air helps gas igniters because they don't get damp. It's harder on induction cooktops. An induction top uses a fan to pull air across its power board, and that fan collects whatever is floating around the kitchen: trail and arena dust, hay dust brought in on clothes, and pet hair. As the fan and the path under the cabinet fill up, the board runs hotter and shuts down sooner. Wildfire is another local factor. Large parts of Poway were evacuated during the Cedar Fire in 2003 and the Witch Creek Fire in 2007. Smoke and ash from later fires can leave a fine layer on kitchen surfaces, burner ports and fan blades. About 69 percent of Poway homes were built between 1970 and 1999. Many of those kitchens have since been remodeled with a pro rangetop or flush induction unit, and cabinets built before the remodel sometimes don't leave enough room for airflow underneath.
Symptom: A zone lowers its power or turns off partway through a long cook, the fan roars, or an F-code appears. Cause: A cooling fan clogged with dust, a fan motor wearing out, or a generator board that has been running hot for years. Fix: We clean or replace the fan, test the board and replace it if needed, and clear the air path under the unit.
Symptom: Flames are yellow, sooty or too tall on low. Burners go out when turned down. Cause: A cooktop set up for natural gas running on LP, or the reverse, with low-flame screws that weren't adjusted when it was converted. Fix: We confirm the fuel, check the orifices and set each valve's low-flame screw for the fuel your home uses.
Symptom: Burners take a few clicks to light, or the flame has gaps around the ring. Cause: Fine dust and ash mixed with cooking grease forms a paste in the ports and around the electrode. Fix: We clean the burner heads and ports, clean the electrode, reseat the caps and replace any electrode that is cracked.
Symptom: The griddle smokes on a medium setting or never cycles off. Cause: The thermostat under the griddle plate has stuck closed or drifted out of calibration. Fix: We test the thermostat and element, replace the failed part and check the plate temperature.
Clean the caps, ports and electrodes monthly. Homes with horses or dogs should also check the induction intake more often, because hair and dust clog it. After a smoke or ash event, wipe the cooktop, dry it, and gently vacuum any vent openings before you cook. If the garage or barn opens near the kitchen, keep that door closed on windy days. Don't hose or spray water around the burners, since water in the switches causes clicking.
Poway homes tend to be spread out. Some are on long private drives, some are behind estate gates, and some are horse properties with animals loose on the land. Send us gate codes, any animals the technician should know about, and where to park. Tell us if your cooktop runs on propane or utility gas, because that affects which parts we bring. Have the model and serial number ready. A short video of the problem helps, especially if it only happens after the unit has been on for a while.
Dust damage usually means cleaning plus a fan or switch, which is almost never a reason to replace the cooktop. Gas rangetops are built to be rebuilt part by part. The harder decision is an older induction unit whose board failed after years of running hot. We'll give you the parts price so you can compare it with a new unit that fits your cutout. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
The element no longer detects a pan - officially documented. Recenter a magnetic pan within 30 seconds and it clears; an F that survives correct cookware is a sensing-circuit repair.
Usually moisture under the burner caps after cleaning or a boil-over. Dry and reseat the caps first; clicking that persists is electrode or spark-module territory.
On the underside of the unit, reached from the cabinet below. Photograph model and serial together - induction board revisions track the serial.
Magnetic-base pans matched to the element size. If a magnet won't stick to the pan bottom, the element will flash F no matter how healthy it is.
Yes - the alert language carries across generations, and parts are ordered by the full model and serial from the plate.
Usually because it's overheating. The cooling fan can't keep the board cool enough, most often because dust or pet hair has clogged it or the cabinet underneath has no clearance. If the problem started gradually, we'll check the fan, the airflow and the board.
Yes. Burners use different orifices for each fuel, and the low-flame settings need to be adjusted too. Running on the wrong setup gives you yellow, sooty flames or burners that go out on low. We verify and adjust the setup after the utility work is done.
Ash can clog burner ports and settle on fans and electronics. Wipe the cooktop and let it dry before cooking, then check that each burner lights cleanly and that an induction fan runs smoothly. If ignition is slow or you see error codes afterward, call us for a cleaning and inspection.
Yes. We cover all of Poway, including properties on dirt or private roads. Tell us about gates and animals ahead of time, and whether a trailer or vehicle might be blocking the drive, so the visit goes smoothly.
