SMEG cooktops
SMEG induction cooktops are the exception in the brand's quiet code policy: an officially published table of Er and E codes, built on the EGO induction modules used across Europe. Gas and ceramic SMEG tops stay mechanical - and get direct diagnosis.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
SIMU315D domino through SIMU336D full-size induction.
PGFU24X2/30X2/36X2 ultra-low-profile gas tops plus RTU rangetop-style models.
SEU122B through SEU365ETB electric ceramic tops.
The 15-inch SIMU315D pairs beside gas - two small tops, one line.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Pan material and size first, zone electronics second - the honest order.
Moisture and cap seating on sealed enamel tops.
Ventilation under the counter matters - the code documents it.
Element and switch path on SEU tops - direct testing.
Stop using the top; glass replacement is quoted honestly against replacement value.
Each domino is its own appliance - diagnosed independently.
Series and model numbers
Induction speaks in documented codes; gas and ceramic speak through symptoms. Both are honest dialects when you know which is which.
Model label
The data plate is on the underside of the cooktop - reached from the cabinet below; a duplicate serial sticker shipped in the factory packaging. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
SMEG diagnostics
The induction table is official SMEG documentation, cross-confirmed by two independent service sources - a rarity for this brand. Gas and ceramic tops have no codes, and that is stated rather than papered over.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for SMEG cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway is dry, dusty and warm in a way the coast isn't. August highs average around 84°F, Santa Ana winds carry grit from September into spring, and many properties border horse trails or keep animals of their own. Dust is the common thread in the Smeg cooktop calls we take here. It clogs induction cooling fans, collects in gas burner ports and settles on the controls. We service Smeg gas, induction and ceramic hobs in Green Valley, Old Coach Estates, Garden Road, Old Poway and the rest of the city.
An induction cooktop cools itself with a small fan that draws air from the cabinet below and pushes it past the power electronics. In Poway, that air carries more than kitchen steam. Santa Ana winds, which run September through April and are strongest inland, blow fine dust through every gap in a house. Homes near the city's 78-plus miles of equestrian trails, or on horse properties, deal with arena dust and hay debris on top of that. Pets add hair. All of it collects on the fan blades and heat sinks, and the cooktop starts cutting zones out to protect itself. Heat compounds the problem. The hot season runs roughly July through late September, and an induction unit set above a wall oven already starts warm. Gas hobs have their own dust issue: fine grit settles in the burner ports and the venturi, which starves the flame and turns it yellow or uneven. Poway residents also remember wildfire seasons. Major parts of the city were evacuated during the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire, and ash from smoke events coats every surface, including cooktop vents. Most homes date from 1970 to 1999, so many hobs are replacements set into older counters.
Symptom: Zones drop power or switch off after several minutes; an overheat code appears; the fan roars. Cause: A cooling fan and heat sink packed with dust, hair or barn grit, a blocked cabinet vent, or a fan motor wearing out. Fix: We open the unit, clean the fan and air path, and test the fan. If the power board has taken heat damage, we quote its replacement.
Symptom: Burners light but burn yellow, lift off the ports, or leave soot on pans. Cause: Dust and debris in the burner ports or venturi, or caps not sitting level after cleaning. Fix: Clear the ports and venturi, reseat the caps, and check the flame. Adjustments to orifices or valves are for a technician.
Symptom: A radiant zone stays dark on every setting. Cause: A burned-out ribbon element or a failed energy regulator, sometimes helped along by heat buildup under the glass. Fix: We test the element and regulator and replace the part that failed. Both are low-to-mid tier repairs.
Symptom: No click at one or all burners when you turn the knob. Cause: A dust-fouled or cracked electrode, a failed knob switch, or a spark generator at the end of its life. Fix: We check each electrode, switch and the generator, then replace the bad part.
In Poway, the maintenance priority is airflow. Keep the space under an induction cooktop open. Don't store bags or boxes against the cabinet vents, and vacuum the intake area when you clean the floors. On gas hobs, clean the burner ports gently with a soft brush and let everything dry before reassembly. After a Santa Ana event or a smoke day, wipe the cooktop and grates before cooking. If a burner ever lights with a big whoosh or you smell gas, turn nothing on or off; leave the house and call SDG&E.
Poway homes are mostly single-family houses with driveways, so parking is rarely an issue. Some rural lots have long or unpaved drives, and a few gated communities need a code at the entrance, so include directions if the address is tricky. Before the visit, note the model and serial. Tell us whether the cooktop is gas, induction or ceramic, and describe exactly when it acts up. Photos of the flame or error display save time. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward any repair we complete.
Usually yes. A clogged fan or dirty burner is a cleaning and small-parts job. The picture changes when overheating has already cooked the induction power board. That board is a higher-tier part, and Smeg parts can take longer to reach independent shops than mass-market parts. We tell you the cost and lead time so you can weigh it against a new cooktop.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across Poway (ZIP 92064, 92074). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
A blocked control zone - usually liquid or a pan on the sensors. Clean and dry the panel first; persistent Er03 is a touch-electronics repair.
Over-voltage from a wrong electrical connection - an installation fault. The fix is correcting the hookup, not replacing boards.
On the underside of the top, from the cabinet below - or on the duplicate sticker that shipped with the packaging.
No - they are mechanical with electric ignition. Diagnosis is direct: electrodes, valves, caps.
E2 overheat protection - often an empty or boiled-dry pan. Recurring E2 under normal use points at the inductor sensor.
Most often it's overheating. The cooling fan draws air from under the counter, and in Poway that air carries dust, pet hair and trail grit. A clogged fan or blocked vent can't keep the electronics cool, especially on hot afternoons. Cleaning the air path often fixes it. If the board has already been damaged, we test and quote.
Yes. Ash and fine particulates settle on the glass, grates, burner ports and vents. Wipe the surfaces, clear the burner ports and check that the induction fan intake isn't coated. If burners light unevenly afterward, a technician can clean the ports and venturi fully.
A yellow, lazy flame means incomplete combustion, often from dust or debris in the ports. It can produce soot and carbon monoxide, so fix it promptly. Keep CO alarms working on every level of the home. If you smell gas, leave and call SDG&E from outside before anything else.
Yes. We service homes throughout Poway, including horse properties and homes on long private drives. Send clear directions, gate codes, and any notes about animals on the property when you book, so our technician can plan the visit.
