Whirlpool cooktops
Whirlpool cooktops keep it simple: knob-controlled gas tops with no electronics to speak of, and glass electric and induction tops whose touch controls report real, officially documented codes like F47 when the boards stop talking. Simple platforms deserve straight answers.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
30 and 36-inch WCG-class tops with EZ-2-Lift grates and SpeedHeat burners.
WCE-class ceramic tops with FlexHeat dual elements.
WCI-class induction with touch controls - the coded end of the line.
Coil and early glass tops - direct element and switch diagnosis.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Moisture and cap seating first, then electrode and spark module.
Element, switch and limiter on radiant tops - each testable in minutes.
Control lock first, then F47 territory - power board and interface.
FlexHeat switch settings versus a failing element - a direct test.
Stop using the top; glass replacement is quoted honestly against unit value.
Indicator and limiter circuit - a small, real repair.
Series and model numbers
The prefix tells the story: WCG gas tops are diagnosed at the burner, WCE and WCI glass tops can speak in documented codes - and the model tag decides boards and glass.
Model label
The data plate is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below. Photograph the full model and serial - glass, elements and boards all order by it. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Whirlpool diagnostics
F47 is documented on Whirlpool's own product-help pages for electric and induction cooktops, reset procedure included. Gas tops have no codes, and longer code lists circulating online for these platforms are excluded.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Whirlpool cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
From established west-side streets to Otay Ranch's new communities, Chula Vista runs every appliance generation - big families, big laundry loads and builder suites hitting their first repairs.
South Bay and East County bring summer heat, hard water and hard-working family appliances - practical repairs with strong parts availability are the local priority.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Chula Vista
A Chula Vista kitchen cooks for a crowd. The average household here is about 3.1 people, well above the county average of 2.7, and big pots of beans, rice, pozole or pasta come to a boil most evenings. That is exactly the kind of use that tests a cooktop: boil-overs that soak the igniters, heavy stockpots on glass, and burners run for hours at a time. Many homes in Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Millenia also went up after 2000, so their original cooktops are now aging. We repair Whirlpool gas, radiant and induction cooktops throughout the city.
Long simmering and frequent boil-overs are the everyday stress on a Chula Vista cooktop. On a gas model, starchy water runs down around the burner cap and into the base, where it wets the spark electrode and sometimes the ignition switch under the knob. Until that dries, the igniters click without stopping. On a radiant glass top, a heavy pot that is dragged or dropped can chip the surface, and sugary spills that bake on can pit the glass. The climate adds a little. Western Chula Vista near the bay is more humid than inland cities, with a few muggy days each August, and salty bay air slowly corrodes electrodes and burner bases. Eastern neighborhoods sit farther inland and get warmer, and September brings the hottest days here, with a record of 103°F. Housing age matters too. About a third of the city's homes were built in 2000 or later, which means many built-in cooktops are now 15 to 25 years old and due for switches, elements or a replacement decision.
Symptom: Every burner keeps sparking even after the flame lights, or clicks with all knobs off. Cause: Liquid has soaked the burner base, electrode or ignition switch; grease can foul the switch so it stays closed. Fix: Dry the burners fully; if clicking continues, replace the wet or fouled ignition switch or a cracked electrode.
Symptom: Visible crack, chip at the edge, or a zone that trips the breaker. Cause: Impact from heavy cookware, thermal shock, or burnt-on sugar spills. Fix: Replace the glass top, often together with the elements beneath; stop using a cracked top immediately.
Symptom: A zone glows at full heat no matter where the knob or pad is set. Cause: A failed infinite switch or a stuck control relay. Fix: Test and replace the switch or relay; switch off its breaker until we arrive.
Symptom: Clicking with no flame on one burner. Cause: Food blocking the ports, or a cap that is sitting crooked after cleaning. Fix: Clear the ports with a pin, seat the cap flat, and check the electrode gap.
Use a pot big enough for the batch, and turn the heat down once it boils to cut down on spills. When a boil-over happens, let the burner cool, then lift the cap and dry the base and electrode before lighting again. On glass, lift pans instead of sliding them. Wipe sugary spills while the surface is still warm, using a cooktop scraper and cleaner. Keep the cookware bottoms flat and clean.
We visit single-family homes, townhomes and apartments on both sides of the city. Give us any HOA gate details or the building and unit number when you book. Have the model and serial number ready; the tag is usually under the cooktop or inside the cabinet below. Tell us which burner or zone fails and whether a code shows. Clear the cabinet under the cooktop so we can reach the gas and electrical connections. If you smell gas, do not try to find the leak. Leave the home and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 9-1-1 from outside.
Ignition switches, electrodes, spark modules, infinite switches and single elements are affordable fixes, even on older units. The harder call is cracked glass on a cooktop near the end of its 15 to 18 year expected life, because the top and elements together can cost close to a new model. We will show you both paths after the $99 diagnostic, which goes toward the repair.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially: the power control board, touch interface or their wiring has a problem. Try Whirlpool's documented reset - breaker off one minute - and book if it returns.
Check the control lock icon first - it is the most common 'dead cooktop' call and clears with the documented hold sequence.
No - they are knob-controlled and mechanical. Diagnosis is direct: spark, valves, caps and ports.
On the underside of the cooktop, from the cabinet below.
The glass assembly is replaceable - quoted honestly against the cooktop's replacement value before any commitment.
Until the burner base, cap and electrode are fully dry, which can take a while on its own. Whirlpool suggests using a hair dryer on the cool setting to speed it up. If the clicking still does not stop once everything is dry, the ignition switch probably needs service.
No. A crack can let spills reach the elements and wiring, and the glass can break further under heat. Turn the cooktop off at the breaker if it is electric, and use another burner or appliance until we replace the top.
Generally yes if the bottoms are smooth and flat, but lift them rather than sliding, and never drop them. Rough or warped bottoms scratch the glass and heat unevenly. Check your manual for weight guidance on your model, and wipe the glass and pan bottoms clean before cooking so grit does not grind in.
Usually the problem is local to that burner: clogged ports, a misplaced cap, or a worn electrode. If none of the burners click, check the breaker first. If one clicks but never lights after cleaning, we test the electrode and spark module.
