AGA ranges
AGA spans two worlds: legacy heat-storage cookers with no electronics at all, and the modern eR7 line whose field-service manual documents one of the richest code sets in luxury cooking. Elise and Mercury ride the proven Rangemaster platform in between.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Thermostatic gas and electric heat-storage AGAs - no codes, pure craft.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Thermal-mass behavior first: usage patterns, then thermostats and elements - diagnosed hot, the way the failure appears.
Relay, triac or thermocouple territory - the stored PCB code names the circuit.
E2 overheat pattern: ventilation and boil-dry review before boards.
Cast-iron furniture parts are orderable through Middleby Residential.
Slumber and wake programming on legacy electrics is often settings, not faults - we check before charging for parts.
Cosmetic vitreous enamel repair guidance comes with honest expectations.
Series and model numbers
AGA generations differ radically - a legacy cooker diagnoses by temperature behavior, an eR7 by PCB codes. The badge decides the visit.
Model label
eR7: the data badge sits behind the removable magnetic plinth cover. Elise: in the drawer cavity - remove the storage drawer. Rangemaster-platform models generally carry the badge on the oven frame near the plinth. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
AGA diagnostics
eR7 codes come verbatim from AGA's official US field-service manual - one of the best-documented luxury platforms. Legacy R7 and heat-storage cookers have no codes at all: they are thermostatic and mechanical, and that is stated plainly rather than invented around.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for AGA ranges. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition, flame quality, temperatures, elements, controls, door fit, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway calls itself the City in the Country, and AGA ranges fit that picture: big family kitchens, horse properties and cookers that stay warm all day. The same setting brings three hazards. Dry Santa Ana winds and trail dust work their way into fans and burner ports. Inland summers push kitchen temperatures up while an always-on cooker adds more heat. And wildfire evacuations, like those during the 2003 Cedar Fire and 2007 Witch Creek Fire, can leave gas service shut off and a cold Classic to bring back. We handle all three on AGA Classic, Mercury and Elise ranges here.
Weather Spark puts Poway's average August high near 84 degrees and marks a hot season running from early July to late September. Grit, not moisture, is the issue. Santa Ana winds blow hardest inland between September and April, and they carry fine dust through screen doors and into kitchens. On equestrian parcels near the trails and the Poway Equestrian Center, barn and arena dust add to the load. That material settles on AGA burner ports and gets pulled into the convection and cooling fans of Mercury and Elise ovens, where it slows motors and skews bake temperatures. Heat-storage Classics face a different stress. Much of Poway's housing was built between 1970 and 1999, and many of those kitchens were never designed around a cooker that radiates warmth around the clock. Traditional two-oven gas models use roughly 425 kWh of energy a week, according to Wikipedia, and most of it lands in the room. After a fire evacuation or any gas shutoff, a gas Classic needs its burner relit and its flue checked before it can reach temperature again.
Symptom: The cooker is cold, the burner will not stay lit or the pilot is out. Cause: Gas turned off at the meter, a thermocouple that no longer holds, dust or insects in the burner, or weak flue draft. Fix: SDG&E restores gas service and relights pilots after a meter shutoff. We then service the burner, test the thermocouple and check the flue.
Symptom: A noisy fan, hot and cool spots, or cakes that dome on one side. Cause: Fine dust and hair coating the fan blades and motor. Fix: We clean the fan cavity, check motor speed and bearings, test the probe and replace the motor if it drags.
Symptom: The roasting oven will not climb to its set point on a hot afternoon. Cause: A weak or open element, or a thermostat, relay or control module failing under steady load. Fix: We test the zone's element and controls and replace the failed part.
Symptom: Flames lift, flicker yellow or light unevenly around the ring. Cause: Dust or debris in the burner ports, or an electrode coated with grime. Fix: We clean the ports and electrode, verify the flame and check the gas setup if the problem persists.
Dust control is the main job. Wipe the range top and clear burner ports with a toothpick after windy days, and let parts dry before relighting. Keep the kitchen closed off from the barn or tack room where you can. For a heat-storage Classic, idle a controllable model during the hottest weeks if the kitchen gets uncomfortable. SDG&E recommends yearly inspection of gas appliances and offers no-cost safety checks; pair that with an annual AGA service and confirm the current interval with AGA.
Some Poway properties sit on long driveways or roads shared with horses, so give us directions, gate codes and any animals we should know about. Tell us whether the range is a gas or electric Classic, a Mercury or an Elise, and send the model and serial number if you can reach the plate. If the cooker went cold after an evacuation or outage, say so; it helps us bring flue and burner parts. We ask that the range is cool enough to work on when a safe shutdown is possible.
Cast-iron AGAs are made to last and to be serviced, so thermocouples, burners, elements and relays are replaced rather than the cooker. Some owners convert older units instead of buying new. Mercury and Elise ranges are weighed like other pro-style ranges, where fan, element and ignition repairs are normal. A $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, gives you a clear list of what failed.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
The modern eR7 line does - a rich, officially documented PCB code set (FE/VE/CE plus numeric 002-159) read via AGA's service interface. Legacy heat-storage cookers have none: they are thermostatic and mechanical.
It cooks from stored heat. Open lids, a cold plain shelf in the simmer oven or oversized pans drain the mass faster than the elements recover it. If overnight recovery stays poor, a thermostat or element visit is warranted.
eR7: behind the removable magnetic plinth cover. Elise: in the drawer cavity after removing the storage drawer.
They are duplex four-wire parts known to fail only at temperature - a room-temperature test can pass a faulty one. Testing hot is the honest method.
Yes - AGA is a Middleby company with US parts through Middleby Residential, and the Elise/Mercury platform shares the widely stocked Rangemaster parts system.
Do not turn the gas back on at the meter yourself. SDG&E restores service and relights pilots once it is safe. After that, if the Classic will not stay lit or heats slowly, call us to service the burner, thermocouple and flue.
Fine dust drawn into the convection fan can slow the motor and coat the blades, so hot air no longer moves evenly. The temperature probe may also read off. Cleaning the fan area often restores even baking; a worn motor or probe needs replacing.
A traditional always-on model radiates heat by design, and in an inland summer the room will feel it. Running the hood, keeping lids down and idling a controllable model during the hottest weeks all help reduce the load. If one oven runs far hotter than normal, that is a different matter and worth a call.
Surface burner ports and electrodes clean from the top once the grates and caps are off. Dust deep in oven fans or behind panels needs partial disassembly, which we do during a service visit. Doing both at once also lets us check the element and fan motor while they are exposed.
