San Diego County covers about 4,526 square miles, and a BlueStar in Coronado deals with different conditions than one in El Cajon. Within a few miles of the coast, the May Gray and June Gloom marine layer keeps kitchens cool and damp from May through August. Salt in that air corrodes spark electrodes, igniter terminals and valve fittings, so coastal calls lean toward ignition problems. Five to fifteen miles inland the marine layer burns off. In El Cajon the August mean high is 88.6°F, and the hottest late-summer days usually reach about 100°F. There, dry Santa Ana days from September through April blow dust into burner venturis. Second homes and seasonal rentals add a third pattern, with spiders and debris building up in orifices while nobody is cooking. Water barely matters for a gas range. Hardness runs roughly 9 to 16 grains per gallon across the county's utilities, and it only comes into play on steam-assist cooking.

Ownership Basics, Including the 2018 Recall

One check applies to every BlueStar owner in the county. In September 2018, CPSC recall 18-218 covered about 7,130 BlueStar and Big Chill gas ranges and wall ovens with serial numbers 1505000 through 1710999, sold May 2015 to October 2017 in the Culinary, Nova, Heritage Classic and Precious Metals series. Running the convection fan during preheat or broil could ignite gas that had built up in the oven. The remedy was a free manufacturer repair, and owners were told not to use the convection fan until it was done. If your serial falls in that range, check the recall on cpsc.gov or the manufacturer's site.

Why BlueStars Get Repaired, Not Replaced

A BlueStar is about as serviceable as a residential range gets. Igniters, safety valves, electrodes, spark modules, burners, fan motors and griddle thermostats can all be replaced individually, and US production generally means shorter parts waits than many imported pro brands. BlueStar's own warranty is two years if the range is registered within 90 days, otherwise one. Past that, repair almost always costs far less than a new pro range. The exception is structural damage to the oven body. A $99 diagnostic, credited to the repair, settles it.
