Bosch washers
Bosch's 24-inch washers - from the 300 Series to the 1600-RPM 800 Series - are the compact standard in San Diego condos, and their E-code dialect is officially documented: E17 for drain-pump timeouts, E23 for the AquaStop leak system, E16 for the door. Most codes point outside the drum before they point inside it, which keeps honest repairs affordable.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The E17 pattern - filter trap, hose, pump, in order.
Lock timing and drain state - resolved properly, never forced.
Shipping bolts on new installs, then feet and suspension - compacts amplify balance.
The E23 investigation - every hose and seal until the source is found.
Dosing habits and water hardness - guidance included.
Spin logic and drain health - measured, not assumed.
Series and model numbers
Series and generation change the trim; the E-Nr inside the door ring is the identity that decides codes, parts and procedures.
Model label
The rating plate with E-Nr, FD date code and serial is inside the porthole door opening, on the frame - open the door and photograph the whole plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Bosch diagnostics
All listed codes carry official meanings on Bosch's US washer support pages. Bosch's own list is longer than any forum table is accurate - codes beyond the official set are read in service mode rather than guessed.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Bosch washers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, drain, spin, balance, leaks, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves washers across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how washers age here.
Washer calls in La Jolla split between full-size pairs in the hillside homes of Muirlands and Bird Rock and compact or stacked units in Village condominiums, where the machine often shares a closet with the dryer. Add hard county water and, close to the shore, salt air on exterior panels, and the same symptom can have different causes than it would inland - which is why the diagnosis starts from the installation, not just the model.
Many La Jolla condos run compact or stacked washers in tight closets. They are serviced in place - tell us about elevators, parking and HOA rules when booking.
San Diego County water is hard; film on dark laundry and residue in the drawer often trace to dosing and scale rather than a failed part - both are reviewed during the visit.
Homes close to the water see more corrosion on panels and fasteners. Corrosion findings are documented during the diagnosis.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
In La Jolla, a Bosch 24-inch washer usually lives in a hallway closet, often stacked under a matching dryer, and often above someone else's ceiling. That placement changes the stakes. When the machine senses water in its base pan it stops with E:00-23, and in an oceanfront tower that code is a warning worth acting on the same day. Add sandy beach towels, a damp marine layer for much of the summer and very hard city water, and the compact Bosch front-loader has a specific set of problems here. We diagnose them in the unit, not over the phone.
Much of La Jolla's housing is low-rise, because since 1972 new coastal-zone buildings west of I-5 have been capped at 30 feet. The older exceptions matter for laundry. Towers like 939 Coast Blvd, built in 1966 with 164 units, put compact washers in small closets several floors up, where a slow leak from a door boot or pump seal travels downward before anyone sees it. Bosch builds a sensor into the base pan for exactly this reason. Weather adds a second layer. From May through August the May Gray and June Gloom marine layer keeps coastal air cool and damp, often into the afternoon, so a closed front-loader door traps moisture in the gasket folds and the drum smells musty within weeks. Salt-laden air near the surf works on hose clamps and exposed fasteners in closets that open to a balcony. Then there is the water itself. The City of San Diego's 2025 report puts its treatment plants at roughly 237 to 243 mg/L of hardness, about 14 grains per gallon, which the USGS calls very hard. That scale narrows inlet screens and coats the heater, and over time that can turn into slow fills and inlet codes.
Symptom: The wash stops mid-cycle and the display shows E:00-23. The floor may still look dry. Cause: Water has collected in the base pan. Common sources are a worn pump seal, a torn door boot, a loose internal hose or foam forced out by overdosing detergent. Fix: Close the tap and call for service, as Bosch advises. We find the wet path, replace the failed seal, boot or hose, and dry the pan.
Symptom: Water stays in the drum and E18 appears; the pump may hum without moving water. Cause: Beach sand, hair ties and coins settle in the drain pump filter behind the lower service flap. Sand from surf trunks and towels also scuffs the impeller. Fix: Drain through the emergency hose, clean the pump cover and impeller, and clear the hose. A pump whose impeller drags is replaced.
Symptom: Clothes come out smelling stale, and dark spots form in the folds of the door seal. Cause: Damp marine-layer air plus a door kept shut between loads, often combined with too much detergent that never fully rinses away. Fix: We inspect the boot for tears, clean the sump area and drain filter, and reset dosing habits. A drum clean cycle follows, and the door stays open between washes.
Symptom: The washer takes a long time to fill or stops with an inlet-pressure code. Cause: Hard-water scale and debris narrow the screens at the hose connections and in the inlet valve. Fix: Clean or replace the inlet filters, check building water pressure at the tap and replace the valve if it no longer opens fully.
Most of what keeps a Bosch compact washer healthy near the ocean is simple and fast. The goal is to keep the gasket dry, keep sand out of the pump and keep hoses from surprising the neighbors below. A closet with no window stays damp longer than a garage, so the door-open habit matters more in towers than in beach cottages. Adjust the schedule upward if you surf often, rent the unit to guests or keep a dog that sheds on the bedding.
Village street parking is time-limited, from 30 minutes to three hours, and it is enforced, so tell us where a technician can legally park or whether your building has a loading space. In towers, let the front desk or HOA know we are coming and whether elevator reservations are needed for a part swap. For beach-area homes near La Jolla Shores or Windansea, parking can be scarce on summer weekends, so weekday slots are easier. Have the model and serial number ready from the label inside the door opening, a photo of the code on the display, and a note on whether water reached the floor.
In most cases, yes. Pump seals, door boots, door locks, inlet valves and drain pumps are routine repairs on a Bosch 24-inch washer. Compact replacements also have to fit an existing closet and stacking kit, which narrows the options. Replacement starts to make sense when the drum bearings roar on spin and the machine is older, because a bearing and tub job is the heaviest repair a front-loader gets. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially, the pump exceeded its time limit - a drain problem. The filter trap is the usual culprit and the first stop; the pump itself is tested if the path is clear.
Urgent - the AquaStop system found water in the base. Close the supply valve and book with priority; the code stays until the leak is found and fixed.
The lock holds while water or heat remains. If the machine drained fully and the door still holds, the lock or its control needs service - it should never be forced.
Inside the door opening on the frame - photograph the E-Nr and FD date code together; Bosch parts require both.
Usually yes - the platforms are deeply documented and parts remain available by E-Nr. The $99 diagnostic gives you the exact repair-versus-replace number.
Not until the source is found. The code means the base pan sensor detected water inside the cabinet, and the floor can stay dry until the pan overflows. In a condo that water ends up in the unit below. Close the water tap, unplug the machine and book a diagnostic.
Near the coast, the May through August marine layer keeps air cool and damp, so the gasket and drum do not dry between loads. Extra detergent makes it worse. Leave the door and drawer open, wipe the boot folds and run the drum clean cycle when the icon lights.
Yes, but rinse the sand out first with a hose or outdoor shower. Sand that reaches the drum settles in the drain pump filter and can scratch the impeller. If you surf regularly, clean the filter behind the service flap monthly rather than waiting for an E18 code.
Often we can work in place, since the pump filter, door lock and boot are reachable from the front. Leak tracing or bearing work may require sliding the machine out, and a stacked dryer sometimes has to come down first. We will tell you before moving anything.
