Bosch washers
Bosch's 24-inch washers - from the 300 Series to the 1600-RPM 800 Series - are the compact standard in San Diego condos, and their E-code dialect is officially documented: E17 for drain-pump timeouts, E23 for the AquaStop leak system, E16 for the door. Most codes point outside the drum before they point inside it, which keeps honest repairs affordable.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The E17 pattern - filter trap, hose, pump, in order.
Lock timing and drain state - resolved properly, never forced.
Shipping bolts on new installs, then feet and suspension - compacts amplify balance.
The E23 investigation - every hose and seal until the source is found.
Dosing habits and water hardness - guidance included.
Spin logic and drain health - measured, not assumed.
Series and model numbers
Series and generation change the trim; the E-Nr inside the door ring is the identity that decides codes, parts and procedures.
Model label
The rating plate with E-Nr, FD date code and serial is inside the porthole door opening, on the frame - open the door and photograph the whole plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Bosch diagnostics
All listed codes carry official meanings on Bosch's US washer support pages. Bosch's own list is longer than any forum table is accurate - codes beyond the official set are read in service mode rather than guessed.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Bosch washers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, drain, spin, balance, leaks, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway calls itself the City in the Country, and the laundry proves it. Riding clothes, saddle pads, dog bedding and trail-dusty jeans all end up in the same Bosch compact front-loader that handles school clothes for a four-bedroom house. Those loads carry hay, grit and hair that a drain pump filter was never meant to collect in bulk. The water is very hard, too. Debris and hard water are the two sources to manage, and both are easier to control once you know where they collect.
The city has more than 78 miles of trails where horses have priority, plus the Poway Equestrian Center and horse properties with dirt roads still in use. Barn and arena dust, hay chaff and burrs ride home on clothing and blankets, and in a front-loader they settle where water slows down: the drain pump filter, the folds of the door boot and the sump. Pet hair from dogs and horses mats in the same places. Homes here are large, with about 39 percent having four bedrooms and an average of 2.9 people per household, so the washer runs often. Roughly 69 percent of the housing was built between 1970 and 1999, and many laundry rooms sit in the garage, where summer afternoons in this inland valley run hot and dry. Poway's own treatment plant delivered water averaging 236 mg/L of hardness in its 2024 report, about 13.8 grains per gallon, which the USGS classifies as very hard. That calcium narrows the inlet screens at the back of the washer and builds on the heating element. The city's history of wildfire evacuations, in 2003 and 2007, is another reason to know how your washer handles ash-laden laundry after a smoke event.
Symptom: Water left in the drum, a slow or noisy drain, and E18 on the display. Cause: Hay chaff, burrs, grit and hair ties collect in the drain pump filter and wrap the impeller. Grit also wears the impeller vanes. Fix: Emergency-drain through the service flap, clean the filter housing and impeller, and clear the drain hose and siphon. If the impeller drags or is chipped, we replace the pump.
Symptom: Hair on clean clothes, a damp patch under the door, or water marks on the front panel. Cause: Dog and horse hair builds a wick in the boot folds that draws water past the seal. Grit caught in the boot can also nick the rubber. Fix: Clean the boot folds and check for cuts. A torn or distorted boot is replaced, and we check the pan for water that could trigger E:00-23.
Symptom: Fill takes longer each week until the washer stops with an inlet or low-pressure code. Cause: Hard water leaves calcium on the screens where the hoses attach, and sediment adds to the restriction. Fix: Clean or replace the inlet filters and test flow. If the valve itself is scaled and sticking, we replace it.
Symptom: A bulging hose, a drip at the fitting, or a flooded garage floor. Cause: Rubber hoses fatigue from pressure swings on every fill, and heat in a closed garage speeds the aging. Fix: Replace both hoses, preferably with braided stainless, and check the valves for weeping. A failed hose can release about 650 gallons an hour.
The most effective step happens before the washer door opens. Shake out saddle pads, horse blankets and dog beds outdoors, brush off burrs and let caked mud dry and fall away. After that, clean the pump filter on a schedule rather than waiting for a code. After a wildfire smoke event, rinse ash-covered items outside first, then wash them in smaller loads so the pump is not handling a heavy sediment load at once. A few minutes at the pump filter costs far less than a new pump.
Many Poway homes sit on larger lots in areas like Green Valley, Old Coach Estates and along Garden Road, some with long driveways or gates. Tell us where to park and how to reach the laundry area, and secure dogs before we arrive. Garage laundry usually gives us room to pull the washer out for boot or pump work. Please have the model and serial number from the label inside the door opening, a photo of any code, and a note on what was in the last load. If animal laundry went through, that helps us look in the right place first.
Drain pumps, boots, inlet valves and hoses are modest repairs on a Bosch 24-inch washer, and they cover the debris-related faults described above. Because these failures come from debris rather than age, fixing the part and changing the laundry routine usually solves the problem for good. Replacement makes sense when an older machine also has worn bearings from years of heavy loads. Our $99 diagnostic comes off the repair bill.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially, the pump exceeded its time limit - a drain problem. The filter trap is the usual culprit and the first stop; the pump itself is tested if the path is clear.
Urgent - the AquaStop system found water in the base. Close the supply valve and book with priority; the code stays until the leak is found and fixed.
The lock holds while water or heat remains. If the machine drained fully and the door still holds, the lock or its control needs service - it should never be forced.
Inside the door opening on the frame - photograph the E-Nr and FD date code together; Bosch parts require both.
Usually yes - the platforms are deeply documented and parts remain available by E-Nr. The $99 diagnostic gives you the exact repair-versus-replace number.
Small pads, yes, after shaking and brushing them out. Heavy turnout blankets are usually too bulky for a 24-inch drum and can trigger imbalance codes or strain the suspension. Anything with lots of hair or hay should be cleaned outdoors first, and the pump filter checked afterward.
The city's 2024 water quality report shows an average of 236 mg/L, about 13.8 grains per gallon, rated very hard. It leaves calcium on inlet screens and the heater, which leads to slow fills and longer cycles. Periodic screen cleaning helps, and a softener reduces the buildup.
Rinse or shake off as much ash as possible outdoors first, then wash in smaller loads. Ash and fine grit behave like sand in the drain pump and filter. Clean the filter after the first few ash-heavy loads rather than waiting for a drain code.
Inland air helps the drum dry, but hair and grit trapped in the boot folds and pump filter hold moisture and residue. Clean both, run the drum clean program when its icon lights, and use the recommended amount of HE detergent.
