Fisher & Paykel washers
Fisher & Paykel washers run the SmartDrive direct-drive system across compact front-loaders and full-size top-loaders - and when they fault, they show a number. The service literature names the common ones precisely: fault 37 is a blocked pump, not a mystery. We diagnose from that literature, per exact model.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The fault-37 path - hose, pump, blockage, tested in order.
Out-of-balance protection, then motor control - split by observation.
Supply, screens and valves - the honest first mile.
Suspension rods and dampers - real wear items on top-loaders.
Lock timing and drain state - never forced.
Photograph it - the number is the best witness the machine offers.
Series and model numbers
One direct-drive philosophy, several generations - the numeric code plus the model plate points the service literature at the right circuit.
Model label
On front-loaders the plate is inside the door opening on the rim; on top-loaders, under the lid toward the rear of the top deck. Photograph the full plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Fisher & Paykel diagnostics
Fault 37's meaning is consistent across SmartDrive service literature. The wider numeric dialect is genuinely per-model - so we decode from the service data for your exact machine rather than reprinting the internet's conflicting lists.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Fisher & Paykel washers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, drain, spin, balance, leaks, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves washers across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how washers age here.
Washer calls in La Jolla split between full-size pairs in the hillside homes of Muirlands and Bird Rock and compact or stacked units in Village condominiums, where the machine often shares a closet with the dryer. Add hard county water and, close to the shore, salt air on exterior panels, and the same symptom can have different causes than it would inland - which is why the diagnosis starts from the installation, not just the model.
Many La Jolla condos run compact or stacked washers in tight closets. They are serviced in place - tell us about elevators, parking and HOA rules when booking.
San Diego County water is hard; film on dark laundry and residue in the drawer often trace to dosing and scale rather than a failed part - both are reviewed during the visit.
Homes close to the water see more corrosion on panels and fasteners. Corrosion findings are documented during the diagnosis.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
Fisher & Paykel no longer lists laundry on its U.S. site, but plenty of its washers are still working in La Jolla homes. Most are AquaSmart or SmartDrive top-loaders with a direct-drive motor and a motor control module mounted under the tub, plus some front-load models. They are well built, and they are worth keeping. Beach life is hard on them, though. Surf sand, wetsuit rinse water and months of damp marine air all find the weak points. We are an independent service company that still repairs these machines.
Windansea was designated one of the city's surfing beaches in 1960, and La Jolla laundry reflects it. Sandy towels, board shorts and wetsuits go into the washer, and fine sand settles in the drain path and pump. Sand abrades pump impellers, and a clog trips a drain fault on an AquaSmart control. The weather adds a second stress. From May through August the marine layer keeps air cool and damp near the coast, often into the afternoon, and coastal humidity averages roughly 63 to 75 percent. On a SmartDrive machine the motor control module sits below the tub, and moisture exposure is a known contributor to module failures. A laundry closet that never fully dries out gives that board a harder life. Then there is the water. City of San Diego plant averages of 237 to 243 mg/L, about 14 grains per gallon, mean scale on inlet valve screens and less effective detergent, which tempts people to overdose. Finally, some homes here are second residences or licensed short-term rentals, so machines may sit idle for weeks and then run hard with guest laundry.
Symptom: Water left in the tub, a stopped cycle, and drain codes such as 37 or 114, or one in the 245 to 253 range. Cause: Sand, hair, coins or a kinked hose restrict the drain, and abrasive sand wears the pump over time. Fix: Clear the drain path and hose, inspect the pump impeller, and replace the pump if it is worn or seized.
Symptom: The machine dies mid-cycle or shows a code from the module group, such as 1, 57, 60 or 107 to 112. Cause: The module that drives the direct-drive motor has failed; moisture exposure is a known contributor. Fix: Test motor and wiring, then replace the motor control module and check the area for leaks that could repeat the damage.
Symptom: The washer will not start or spin and shows a lid lock code such as 234, 235, 238 or 239. Cause: A failed lid lock or a switch that no longer engages cleanly, sometimes with corroded contacts in damp rooms. Fix: Test the lock and harness and replace the lock assembly.
Symptom: Loud banging or the cabinet walking during spin, worse with heavy beach towels. Cause: Suspension damping wears out with age, so the tub swings too far on unbalanced loads. Fix: Replace all four suspension rods as a set so the tub stays balanced.
Most sand problems can be prevented. Rinse wetsuits and shake out towels outside before they go in the machine. Leave the lid open after the last load in damp months so the tub and the area around the module can dry. Use the right amount of a high-efficiency detergent, since overdosing leaves residue and does not clean better in hard water. If the house sits empty between visits or guest stays, turn off the supply valves. Pet owners should also pull hair from blankets before washing.
Laundry in La Jolla may be in a garage, an interior closet or a condo utility room. Village parking is time-limited and enforced, so let us know about a driveway or guest spot. In older oceanfront towers, some buildings require elevator reservations or HOA approval for service work, so check before the visit. When you book, have the model and serial number, the code number shown on the display, and what the machine was doing when it stopped. If there is standing water in the tub, leave it; it helps us see how far the cycle got.
Because Fisher & Paykel no longer sells laundry in the U.S., parts availability decides many of these calls. Pumps, lid locks, valves and suspension rods are affordable repairs that add years to a sound machine. A motor control module or rotor job on a washer that is more than ten years old often tips toward replacement. We check parts availability for your model during the $99 diagnostic, which is credited toward the repair.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Per the service literature: the water level is not changing while draining - a blocked pump, kinked hose or obstruction. The drain path is cleared and the pump tested under load.
Because the numeric meanings are per-model in the service literature. The visit reads your number against your machine's own table - honest beats copied.
One redistribution is normal life; recurring stops with normal loads mean suspension or sensing, and both are testable.
Front-loaders: inside the door opening on the rim. Top-loaders: under the lid, toward the rear.
Yes - the direct-drive platform is deeply documented, and many legacy machines are still worth fixing.
For many models, yes, though availability varies because F&P no longer sells laundry in the U.S. We check your model and serial number against current supply before recommending a repair, so you know the part exists before you commit. Common wear parts are usually easiest to find.
Beach sand is heavy and fine. It settles in the drain path and pump instead of flushing out, and over time it wears the pump impeller. Shaking out towels and rinsing wetsuits before washing is the cheapest fix. If codes continue, the pump may already be damaged.
It can. On SmartDrive machines the motor control module sits under the tub, and moisture exposure is a known contributor to module failure. Keeping the laundry area ventilated, fixing small leaks and leaving the lid open to dry all reduce that risk.
On AquaSmart top-loaders, codes 234, 235, 238 and 239 are grouped as lid lock faults by Sears PartsDirect. The lock or its wiring is not confirming that the lid is secure, so the machine will not proceed. Replacing the lock assembly usually resolves it.
