Fisher & Paykel washers
Fisher & Paykel washers run the SmartDrive direct-drive system across compact front-loaders and full-size top-loaders - and when they fault, they show a number. The service literature names the common ones precisely: fault 37 is a blocked pump, not a mystery. We diagnose from that literature, per exact model.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The fault-37 path - hose, pump, blockage, tested in order.
Out-of-balance protection, then motor control - split by observation.
Supply, screens and valves - the honest first mile.
Suspension rods and dampers - real wear items on top-loaders.
Lock timing and drain state - never forced.
Photograph it - the number is the best witness the machine offers.
Series and model numbers
One direct-drive philosophy, several generations - the numeric code plus the model plate points the service literature at the right circuit.
Model label
On front-loaders the plate is inside the door opening on the rim; on top-loaders, under the lid toward the rear of the top deck. Photograph the full plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Fisher & Paykel diagnostics
Fault 37's meaning is consistent across SmartDrive service literature. The wider numeric dialect is genuinely per-model - so we decode from the service data for your exact machine rather than reprinting the internet's conflicting lists.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Fisher & Paykel washers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, drain, spin, balance, leaks, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service areas and operating context
Alpha Pro serves Fisher & Paykel washers in communities including La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Poway, and the full San Diego County footprint below — ZIP by ZIP. Installation and room conditions vary from the coast to inland homes.
Recurring condensation, marine exposure, ventilation limits, and visible corrosion can be useful details during repair or maintenance.
Share room conditions, recent heat events, ventilation restrictions, and when the symptom appears.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · San Diego County
Fisher & Paykel's current U.S. lineup covers cooking, refrigeration and dishwashers, but no laundry. The washers still found in San Diego County are legacy machines, mostly AquaSmart and SmartDrive top-loaders plus some front-load models. SmartDrive used a direct-drive brushless DC motor, with no belt or gearbox, controlled by a motor control module mounted under the tub. It was a clever design, and its failure patterns are well documented by parts suppliers. We are an independent service company that repairs these washers countywide, and we check parts supply before recommending any major job.
The same washer ages differently depending on where it sits in the county. At the beaches, sand from surf and beach days lands in the drain path and wears the pump, and the damp May to August marine layer keeps laundry areas humid, which matters because moisture is a known contributor to motor control module failures. Our La Jolla page covers those coastal patterns, including heavy use in vacation rentals. Inland valleys trade moisture for heat and dust. Garage laundry rooms get very hot, and Santa Ana winds from September to April bring dust and single-digit humidity. In Poway, barn and trail dirt adds a heavier load; see that page for details. South Bay homes tend to be newer and more crowded, with average households above three people in Chula Vista, which we cover on its own page. Hard water ties it all together. 2025 reports put the City of San Diego at 237 to 243 mg/L, Helix at 206 mg/L, Sweetwater at 193 mg/L and Otay at 9.4 grains per gallon, with county tap water running roughly 9 to 16 grains. Every one of those levels scales inlet valve screens and reduces detergent performance.
Symptom: Inlet valve: 21, 26, 27, 49, 50, 246. Air tube: 38, 39. Pressure transducer: 58, 68. Thermistor: 10, 41, 237. Cause: Scaled screens, failed valve coils, a kinked or leaking air tube, or a failed sensor. Groupings are from Sears PartsDirect's AquaSmart list. Fix: Clean screens, test coils and sensors, and replace the failed valve, tube, transducer or thermistor.
Symptom: MCM group: 1, 57, 60, 107, 108, 112, 133 and 220 to 226. Motor not running: 136, 137. Cause: Failure of the module that drives the motor, with moisture a known contributor, or a motor or wiring fault. Fix: Test the stator, wiring and module, then replace the failed component and correct any leak underneath.
Symptom: Lid lock: 234, 235, 238, 239. Clutch: 40, 56, 160. Display: 45, 46, 103 to 106. Drain: 37, 114, 245, 247 to 250, 253. Cause: Worn lock or clutch parts, a display board fault, or a clogged drain path or failing pump. Fix: Replace the lock, clutch parts or display board, or clear the drain and replace the pump.
Symptom: Rhythmic slapping during spin, or loud banging as the tub swings. Cause: On older SmartDrive machines, rotor magnet adhesive can fail and suspension rod damping wears out. These patterns are described mainly by overseas parts suppliers, so we confirm them in person. Fix: Replace the rotor, or all four suspension rods as a set.
Whether you live by the beach or in an inland valley, the same basics protect these machines. Load evenly and do not overfill. Dose detergent to the load; hard water tempts overdosing, and residue causes more trouble than it prevents. Keep the laundry area dry and ventilated to protect the module under the tub. Replace rubber hoses on schedule, since a burst hose can release around 650 gallons an hour. In pet homes, keep hair out of the load as well.
Access varies from beach cottages and condo towers to gated estates and townhome complexes. Tell us about parking, gates, elevators and HOA rules when you book. Pull small items away from the washer and make sure the water valves and outlet behind it can be reached. The most useful details are the model and serial number, the code on the display, the cycle it stopped in and whether water remains in the tub. For noises, a short video recorded during spin often identifies rotor or suspension problems quickly. Property managers can authorize repairs for tenants and military families in advance.
With Fisher & Paykel out of U.S. laundry, the first question is whether the part is still available for your model. Inlet valves, air tubes, sensors, lid locks, pumps and suspension rods are modest jobs and usually worth doing. A motor control module or rotor on a machine older than about ten years often favors replacement. We check supply during the $99 diagnostic, which is credited toward the repair, and give you a straight recommendation.

Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Per the service literature: the water level is not changing while draining - a blocked pump, kinked hose or obstruction. The drain path is cleared and the pump tested under load.
Because the numeric meanings are per-model in the service literature. The visit reads your number against your machine's own table - honest beats copied.
One redistribution is normal life; recurring stops with normal loads mean suspension or sensing, and both are testable.
Front-loaders: inside the door opening on the rim. Top-loaders: under the lid, toward the rear.
Yes - the direct-drive platform is deeply documented, and many legacy machines are still worth fixing.
We cannot speak for the company, but its current U.S. website lists cooking, ventilation, refrigeration and dishwashing, with no laundry. Existing AquaSmart and SmartDrive machines remain in many homes, and many can still be repaired when parts are available for the specific model.
The groupings on this page come from Sears PartsDirect's list for AquaSmart top-load washers. Other models, including front-loaders and non-U.S. versions, may use different codes. Give us your model number and the code, and we will confirm what it means before ordering parts.
On SmartDrive washers, the motor control module is the circuit board that runs the direct-drive motor. It sits under the tub, so leaks and moisture can reach it, and moisture exposure is a known contributor to failures. A failed module usually shows one of the codes in its group.
We serve San Diego County broadly, including La Jolla, Poway and Chula Vista, each of which has its own page with local details. Call with your address and we will confirm scheduling. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 7am to 6pm.
