Fisher & Paykel washers
Fisher & Paykel washers run the SmartDrive direct-drive system across compact front-loaders and full-size top-loaders - and when they fault, they show a number. The service literature names the common ones precisely: fault 37 is a blocked pump, not a mystery. We diagnose from that literature, per exact model.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The fault-37 path - hose, pump, blockage, tested in order.
Out-of-balance protection, then motor control - split by observation.
Supply, screens and valves - the honest first mile.
Suspension rods and dampers - real wear items on top-loaders.
Lock timing and drain state - never forced.
Photograph it - the number is the best witness the machine offers.
Series and model numbers
One direct-drive philosophy, several generations - the numeric code plus the model plate points the service literature at the right circuit.
Model label
On front-loaders the plate is inside the door opening on the rim; on top-loaders, under the lid toward the rear of the top deck. Photograph the full plate. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Fisher & Paykel diagnostics
Fault 37's meaning is consistent across SmartDrive service literature. The wider numeric dialect is genuinely per-model - so we decode from the service data for your exact machine rather than reprinting the internet's conflicting lists.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Fisher & Paykel washers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, drain, spin, balance, leaks, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
In Poway, the washer handles more than school clothes. Riding jeans, saddle pads, barn towels and trail-dusty work gear all end up in the tub, and homes average 2.9 people. Many local laundry rooms still have a Fisher & Paykel top-loader, usually an AquaSmart or SmartDrive model with a direct-drive motor. They are no longer sold in the U.S., but they respond well to repair when the right part is available. We are an independent service company fixing these machines in Green Valley, Old Coach Estates, Old Poway and across the city.
Poway has more than 78 miles of city trails where horses have priority, and the laundry reflects that. Dirt, hay fines and grit are heavier than ordinary lint. They settle in the bottom of the tub, collect in the drain path and wear the pump. Big, dense loads such as horse blankets and heavy towels also load the drive system, so the basket clutch and motor work harder on every spin. Most Poway homes are single-family houses built between 1970 and 1999, and many put the washer in the garage. Inland summers are hot and dry, with the hot season running from about July into late September, and a garage laundry area bakes on those afternoons. Heat is hard on electronic parts such as the motor control module. Then there is the water. The City of Poway's 2024 report lists a distribution average of 236 mg/L, roughly 13.8 grains per gallon, which the USGS scale calls very hard. The city itself notes calcium buildup on fixtures. In a washer, that same mineral content scales the inlet valve screens and slows filling, and it weakens detergent, which pushes people to add more soap than the machine needs.
Symptom: The washer agitates but will not spin properly, and shows a code such as 40, 56 or 160. Cause: The clutch that links the basket to the drive is not engaging correctly, often after years of heavy, dense loads. Fix: Inspect the clutch and drive components and replace the worn parts.
Symptom: Lights and display work, but the drum will not turn, sometimes with codes 136 or 137. Cause: A motor fault, damaged wiring or a failing motor control module. Fix: We test the stator, rotor position sensing and module before replacing parts, so you only pay for what failed.
Symptom: Very slow fill or a fill code such as 21, 26 or 27. Cause: Minerals from very hard water clog the inlet screens, or a valve coil fails. Fix: Clean or replace the screens and replace the valve if a coil tests open.
Symptom: Water left behind, a grinding pump and drain codes in the 245 to 253 range. Cause: Dirt, hay and small objects from barn clothing collect in the pump and hose. Fix: Clear the path, flush the hose and replace the pump if the impeller is worn.
Shake and brush barn and trail clothing outdoors before it goes in the machine; every handful of dirt you remove is one less the pump has to pass. Split horse blankets and heavy gear into their own balanced loads rather than stuffing the tub. Measure detergent carefully, even with hard water. If the washer is in the garage, keep the area around it clear so air can move, and look behind it now and then for small leaks. Dog and cat hair belongs in the lint brush, not the pump.
Poway homes are mostly single-family with driveways, so parking is simple. On horse properties, tell us about gates and any animals near the path to the laundry area. If the washer is in the garage, clear space so we can pull it forward. Note the code shown on the display, the cycle it stopped on and whether water is still in the tub. The model and serial number from the label, plus a photo, help us check parts availability before we arrive.
Inlet valves, pumps and many clutch repairs are reasonable jobs that keep a solid machine going. The decision gets harder when a motor control module or rotor fails on a washer more than ten years old, and harder still if parts for that model are scarce, since F&P left the U.S. laundry market. We check both during the $99 diagnostic, which is credited toward any repair, so you can decide with real numbers.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Per the service literature: the water level is not changing while draining - a blocked pump, kinked hose or obstruction. The drain path is cleared and the pump tested under load.
Because the numeric meanings are per-model in the service literature. The visit reads your number against your machine's own table - honest beats copied.
One redistribution is normal life; recurring stops with normal loads mean suspension or sensing, and both are testable.
Front-loaders: inside the door opening on the rim. Top-loaders: under the lid, toward the rear.
Yes - the direct-drive platform is deeply documented, and many legacy machines are still worth fixing.
It depends on size and your model's capacity. Brush off as much dirt and hair as possible first and wash them in a balanced load. Very large or heavy blankets put extra strain on the clutch, suspension and drive, and a commercial machine may be kinder to your washer.
On AquaSmart and SmartDrive machines, that often points to the basket clutch, especially if the display shows 40, 56 or 160. It can also be a lid lock or drain issue, since the machine will not spin with water in the tub. We check each in turn.
Poway's water averages 236 mg/L, which is very hard. Minerals collect on the inlet screens and slow filling, and hardness reduces how well detergent works. Cleaning the screens periodically and measuring detergent correctly helps the machine fill and rinse as designed.
Heat alone rarely breaks a washer, but it adds stress to electronics such as the motor control module, and garages also collect dust. Keeping the area clear, ventilated and free of leaks gives the machine the best chance. If codes appear during hot spells, note them and call us.
