GE Profile cooktops
GE Profile cooktops span PHP induction with SmartHQ WiFi, gas-on-glass and radiant tops. The honest part: GE programs FXX fault codes into these controls but officially keeps their meanings technician-facing - the sanctioned owner move is a 30-second breaker reset. We work from that reality, with the service data the codes were written for.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

30 and 36-inch sealed-burner gas tops with continuous grates.
Ceramic-glass radiant tops with SyncBurners on larger formats.
Touch controls on glass - the component the FXX family usually points at.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Magnet test first, generator second - the honest order.
Breaker, power path and control - after GE's 30-second reset.
Moisture under caps and electrode condition on PGP tops.
Element and switch path tested directly - no codes to consult.
Glass-touch panel diagnosis - and the FXX family often points here.
Stop using the top; glass replacement is quoted honestly against replacement value.
Series and model numbers
Three platforms, one plate: the full model number from under the top decides which control, glass and generator parts apply.
Model label
The model and serial plate is on the underside of the cooktop burner box, reached from the cabinet below - and GE repeats the model on a sticker in the literature pack that shipped with the top. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
GE Profile diagnostics
GE's own support pages confirm FXX codes exist and stay technician-facing - and document pan-detection flashing as normal. Internet tables claiming per-code cooktop decodes conflict with each other and are excluded here.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for GE Profile cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves cooktops across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how cooktops age here.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction, while established homes keep gas - often on kitchen islands with downdraft ventilation. Marine air and enthusiastic cleaning both find their way into burner bases, which is why the endless-clicking igniter is one of the most common cooktop calls in 92037. Zone electronics, cookware detection and moisture issues are separated before any part is named.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction. Zone electronics and cookware detection are tested with proper instruments.
Marine air and cleaning moisture cause the classic endless-clicking igniter; drying and evaluation come before part replacement.
Downdraft and island installations shape access and service - mention the setup when booking.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
Most La Jolla cooktop calls come down to electronics. A GE Profile induction or radiant cooktop runs on a control board and, on induction models, a power board with a cooling fan. Those boards are the parts most exposed to what this stretch of coast throws at a kitchen: months of damp marine-layer air, brief Santa Ana spells with bone-dry wind, and the occasional grid strain during September heat. Gas models have their own coastal weak point at the igniter. We service cooktops from the Village and the Shores to Bird Rock, Muirlands and Mount Soledad.
From May through August, the marine layer holds cool, damp air over La Jolla, often well into the afternoon. Coastal humidity averages roughly 63 to 75 percent across the year and peaks in summer. That moisture settles on everything in a kitchen, including the glass of a touch-control cooktop and the connectors on the boards beneath it. Over years, damp salty air leaves a film on terminals and contacts that can cause intermittent faults. Then, for about ten days a year, Santa Ana winds can push humidity into single digits, a sharp swing for the same electronics. Power is the third factor. On September 8, 2024, a regional heat wave pushed SDG&E to a record 5,032 megawatts of demand, and about 13,000 customers lost power. Sags and outages like that can upset or damage appliance control boards, and a cooktop that comes back from an outage with a code or a frozen display is a common call after hot spells. Gas cooktops on lots closest to the surf also collect salt on their spark electrodes and brass burner parts, which weakens the spark over time.
Symptom: After power returns, the display stays blank, shows an F-code, or several zones will not start. Cause: A voltage sag or surge corrupts the control's state or damages a component on the board. Sometimes a simple reset clears it; sometimes the board has failed. Fix: Turn the breaker off for a few minutes and restore it. If the code persists, we check supply voltage, read the F-code in GE's technician data and replace the affected board.
Symptom: Keys work some days and not others, or the lock engages without being pressed. Cause: Residue or condensation on the touch surface, or corrosion on the ribbon connection between the touch panel and the control board. Fix: Clean and fully dry the glass. If the problem persists, we inspect and reseat connectors and replace the touch control if it tests bad.
Symptom: Burners click several times before lighting, or one burner lights only after a long wait. Cause: Salt and moisture build on the electrode tip and switch contacts. Burner caps knocked off-center during cleaning make it worse. Fix: We clean or replace electrodes and switches and test the spark module. We never adjust gas valves as a quick fix.
Symptom: The cooktop cuts out after a few minutes on high and shows a code. Cause: Limited air under the unit, a fan slowed by dust or pet hair, or a failing power board. Fix: Clear the cabinet below, clean or replace the fan, and test the power board.
You cannot change the marine layer, but you can limit what it does to a cooktop. Keep the glass dry and clean so the touch sensors read cleanly. Protect the electronics from power problems where you can. For gas models on oceanfront lots, regular electrode checks catch corrosion before ignition fails. If you have a dog or cat, pet hair drifts into the cooling fan intake of induction units, so include the cabinet vents when you vacuum. A soft cloth and a minute of attention go a long way.
Parking in the Village is time-limited, from 30 minutes to three hours, and actively enforced. If you have a driveway or a guest space, please save it for us. At La Jolla Shores, summer overflow parking fills residential streets, so morning slots are easier. Oceanfront towers such as 939 Coast Blvd may require a service elevator reservation or advance notice to the HOA, so check building rules when you book. Have the model and serial number ready, along with a photo of any code and a note on whether the fault started after an outage. That tells us whether to bring a board.
A control or power board is the costliest non-glass part on a GE Profile cooktop, but on a unit that is otherwise sound, replacing it is usually far cheaper than a new cooktop plus countertop cutout work. The case for replacing grows when the glass is also cracked, or when the cooktop is near the end of a typical 15 to 18 year service life. The $99 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and we give you the numbers before any work.

Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
GE keeps cooktop fault codes technician-facing - no public table exists. The honest path: photograph the code, try the 30-second breaker reset GE sanctions, and let the visit read it against service data.
GE's documented pan-detection behavior - the zone sees no compatible cookware. Induction needs magnetic pans of the right size; a magnet that sticks firmly is the quick test.
On the underside of the burner box, from the cabinet below. The literature pack that shipped with the top repeats it.
No - they are sealed-burner platforms with electronic ignition. Diagnosis is direct: electrodes, spark module, valves and caps.
The glass is replaceable as a part, and the quote is given honestly against the value of the top - induction glass is a premium component.
Switch the cooktop off at the breaker, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. That resets the control and clears many post-outage codes. If the same code returns, or the display stays blank, a board may have been damaged. Note the code and call us; we will test before replacing anything.
Humidity alone rarely breaks a control, but damp, salty air over many years can leave a film on connectors and contacts, which causes intermittent response. Moisture sitting on the glass surface can also be read as a touch. Keeping the surface dry helps, and we can clean or replace corroded connections.
Yes. Let us know the building when you book so we can confirm elevator access, loading rules and parking. Some HOAs want a certificate of insurance on file ahead of time. Cooktop repairs are done in place, so there is usually no large equipment to move.
A brief whiff while a burner is trying to catch can happen, but a lingering smell is not normal. Turn the burners off. If the smell persists, leave the home and call SDG&E from outside. Once the utility has cleared it, we can repair the ignition parts.
