La Jolla coverage
Alpha Pro serves cooktops across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how cooktops age here.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction, while established homes keep gas - often on kitchen islands with downdraft ventilation. Marine air and enthusiastic cleaning both find their way into burner bases, which is why the endless-clicking igniter is one of the most common cooktop calls in 92037. Zone electronics, cookware detection and moisture issues are separated before any part is named.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated cooktop repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a standalone cooktop request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, fuel type, cutout or installation.
Describe which position is affected, the selected setting and what happens. A no-heat symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Note the burner or zone, cookware used, selected level and whether the behavior changes. Do not continue testing a surface that overheats or will not shut off.
Note which control was selected and what you safely observed before stopping use. Never relight manually, clear ports with tools, adjust a valve or reproduce a gas or flame concern.
Photograph the visible condition without pressing, lifting or using the damaged area. Stop use if glass is cracked or live parts may be exposed.
Photograph the complete display and share the exact model. Do not include account passwords, remove knobs to access components, enter diagnostic modes or assume a code is universal.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the cooktop. Do not lift it from the counter or touch power, gas, ventilation or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Surface and fuel type set the service path—identify yours from the model label, not the look of the surface.
Burners, igniters and spark modules. Clicking that will not stop is a common, diagnosable symptom—do not keep triggering it.
Elements and surface switches under a glass top. A cracked top is replaced as a part, quoted by exact model.
Sealed electronics drive the cost profile. Cookware compatibility issues can mimic faults—note the pan you used.
Safe owner checks
Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. Do not use the cooktop, operate switches or return to demonstrate the concern.
Do not reproduce the problem. If there is fire, smoke, exposed live parts or any doubt, leave the home and call 911. Do not touch the surface, controls or nearby electrical/gas connections.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the cooktop, removing panels or reaching near wiring, gas or ventilation connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved surface, burner, grate and exterior care. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning method as a diagnostic step.
Do not lift the cooktop from the counter, touch wiring, adjust a gas valve, alter ventilation or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general cooktop error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a complete range with an oven cavity, use the distinct range repair parent. For a separate built-in or wall oven, use the oven repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this standalone-cooktop identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.
Review current pricing information90-day labor warranty.
1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

Water on the spark electrode or under the cap lets the spark jump in the wrong place. Let the burner air-dry fully, reseat the cap, and try again. If clicking continues once everything is dry, the switch or spark module may be damaged and needs testing.
Yes. The pan has to be magnetic. If a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the bottom, it will work. Aluminum, copper and glass won't heat unless they have a magnetic base. Warped or very small pans can also trigger the 'no pan' signal.
Often, yes. Some cookware with layered bases hums under the magnetic field, and the cooling fan makes noise too. A new grinding noise or a fan that stays loud long after cooking can signal a failing fan, which we can replace.
We don't recommend it. A cracked top can expose live electrical parts, and replacement often includes the elements or wiring beneath the glass. Stop using the cooktop, switch off its breaker, and have it assessed before anyone cooks on it again.
Local notes · La Jolla
Cooktops are mostly electronics sitting under or beside heat, and coastal air reaches all of it. On a gas top, moisture and salt collect on spark electrodes and switch contacts, so burners click without lighting or keep clicking after they catch. On induction, a cooling fan pulls air through the cabinet below, carrying that same damp air across the power board. We diagnose all three cooktop types in La Jolla kitchens, and we'll tell you when a problem is cookware or cleaning rather than a failed part.
Gas cooktops light with a spark module that sends high voltage to a small ceramic electrode at each burner. That spark needs a clean, dry path to the burner cap. After a boil-over or a wipe-down, water bridges the gap, and in the months when May Gray and June Gloom keep coastal air cool and damp into the afternoon, surfaces dry slowly. The result is steady clicking or a burner that won't catch. Over time, salt carried in from the ocean corrodes electrode tips and the terminals at the switch, which makes the problem permanent. Induction works on a completely different principle: a coil under the glass creates a field of roughly 25 to 50 kHz that heats magnetic cookware directly. The electronics that drive the coil get hot, so a fan pushes cabinet air across them. Custom islands and tight cabinetry can starve that fan, and corrosion at board connectors near the coast adds intermittent faults. Radiant glass tops sit in between, with ribbon elements, switches and a limiter. We repair cooktops from Wolf, Thermador and Miele to GE, Bosch and KitchenAid.
Symptom: Continuous sparking with no flame, or clicking that keeps going after ignition. Cause: Moisture after cleaning, a burner cap not seated, a wet or corroded switch, a salt-pitted electrode, or a failing spark module. Fix: We dry and reseat parts, check the outlet's polarity and ground, then replace the switch, electrode or module that tests bad.
Symptom: An error code or a zone that quits after a few minutes, often with a loud fan. Cause: Blocked cooling air path under the cabinet, a fan clogged with dust or pet hair, or a failing power board. Fix: We open up the air path, clean or replace the fan and test the board.
Symptom: The indicator flashes, the zone beeps, and nothing heats even though the pan is sitting on the ring. Cause: Non-magnetic, warped or undersized cookware, a pan off center, or a failed coil or board. Fix: We test with a known magnetic pan first, then diagnose the coil and electronics.
Symptom: One zone won't warm or can't be turned down. Cause: An open ribbon element, a failed infinite switch or relay, or a limiter fault. Fix: We test each part and replace the failed one; a cracked glass top usually means replacing the top assembly.
After cleaning a gas top, let the caps and heads dry fully before you light them, and seat each cap flat. Clear burner ports with a toothpick, never a metal pin. On induction, check that nothing blocks the vent path under the cabinet, such as stored pans or a drawer liner. On radiant and induction glass, wipe sugary spills right away; sugar can pit the surface. SDG&E recommends an annual gas appliance check and offers no-cost safety inspections.
Most cooktop repairs happen from above and in the cabinet below, so empty the drawers or cabinet under the unit. For gas, we'll need the shutoff valve reachable. If you smell gas, don't wait for us: leave the house and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 911 from outside. Condo owners should confirm contractor hours with their building. Have the model and serial ready, found under the cooktop or on the product manual, and a short video of the symptom helps.
Switches, igniters, electrodes, spark modules and radiant elements are low to mid-cost repairs, and stovetops are cited to last about 15 to 18 years. Induction power boards and replacement glass are the expensive jobs and can approach the price of a new unit. A cooktop cut into stone is harder to swap for a different size, which tips the balance toward repair.
