LG cooktops
LG's US cooktop line runs from SmoothTouch radiant tops to the LG STUDIO 36-inch induction with its flex zone. The display message owners see most - HS - is not a fault at all: it is the hot-surface indicator, and LG documents it. Real faults arrive as F-codes that LG resolves per model, and we read them the same way.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

The 36-inch CBIS3618B induction top with the 11-inch dual center zone and flex cooking zone.
Professional-style gas cooktops in the STUDIO line - mechanical burners, spark ignition.
Touch controls mean liquid on the panel can mimic faults - a service reality worth knowing.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Pan detection and overheat protection first, module second - the honest order.
Liquid, lock mode and panel condition before any part - SmoothTouch reality.
Element winding and its switch - measured directly.
Moisture and cap seating - dry and reseat before parts.
Stop using the top; replacement is quoted honestly against unit value.
Supply and module isolation - measured, and taken seriously.
Series and model numbers
Three technologies, one plate discipline: the model from the underside label decides which diagnostic world - element, module or valve - the visit enters.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; the installation paperwork carries a duplicate. Photograph it if accessible - otherwise the visit reads it during service. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
LG diagnostics
HS as a non-fault hot-surface indicator is official LG documentation, as is the F-plus-number code format. Per-code cooktop meanings are model-specific in LG's system, so no invented universal table is published here.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for LG cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves cooktops across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how cooktops age here.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction, while established homes keep gas - often on kitchen islands with downdraft ventilation. Marine air and enthusiastic cleaning both find their way into burner bases, which is why the endless-clicking igniter is one of the most common cooktop calls in 92037. Zone electronics, cookware detection and moisture issues are separated before any part is named.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction. Zone electronics and cookware detection are tested with proper instruments.
Marine air and cleaning moisture cause the classic endless-clicking igniter; drying and evaluation come before part replacement.
Downdraft and island installations shape access and service - mention the setup when booking.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
In La Jolla, the air itself is a repair factor. From May through August the marine layer can sit over the coast into the afternoon, and coastal relative humidity averages roughly 63 to 75 percent. Salt spray is heaviest on the blocks nearest the surf. An LG cooktop looks like a sheet of glass, but underneath are touch boards, spark switches and connectors that don't like damp, salty air. Add condo towers where a service call means elevator reservations, and cooktop work here needs its own plan.
Moisture runs through most La Jolla cooktop calls. On gas models, damp caps and electrodes cause the familiar endless clicking, and salt-laden air slowly corrodes igniter terminals and the metal around them, especially in Bird Rock, Windansea and other blocks close to the water. On induction and radiant models the concern is electronic: humidity and salt can work into connector pins and board contacts over the years, and one corroded contact can produce intermittent shutdowns that are hard to reproduce on demand. Power quality matters too. During the September 2024 heat wave, SDG&E demand hit a record 5,032 megawatts on September 8 and about 13,000 customers lost power. Sags and restarts are hard on control boards. Housing shapes the rest. Oceanfront high-rises such as 939 Coast Blvd, built in 1966 before the 30-foot coastal height limit, route every visit through HOA rules. Elsewhere, low-rise homes and older cottages can have tight cabinetry that limits airflow under an induction unit. Hardness from the city system, about 237 to 243 mg/L, mostly appears as chalky rings on the glass.
Symptom: Sparking continues after the burner lights, or starts by itself on damp mornings. Cause: Moisture on caps and electrodes, a burner switch that has absorbed humidity, or salt corrosion on the igniter terminals. The spark module itself can also fail. Fix: Dry and reseat the caps, clean the electrodes and inspect the terminals. We replace the switch or module when testing shows it is at fault.
Symptom: The touch panel stops responding or the unit shuts off mid-cook, sometimes only in humid weather. Cause: Condensation or spills on the touch surface, a corroded connector behind the panel, or a failing touch board. Fix: We clean and dry the panel, inspect the connectors for corrosion, and replace the touch board if the fault persists on a clean, dry surface.
Symptom: Boost or high settings drop to a lower level after a few minutes; the cooling fan runs loudly or not at all. Cause: Restricted airflow in a tight cabinet, or a cooling fan worn by years of service. Fix: We check clearance against the installation requirements, clean the air path and replace the fan if it tests weak.
Symptom: One radiant element never heats, or a crack runs across the cooking surface. Cause: An element or switch failure; a dropped pot or cold liquid on hot glass. Fix: We test and replace the element or switch. Cracked glass means a new top assembly; keep the cooktop off until it is replaced.
Near the ocean, the goals are dry and clean. Wipe salt film off the trim and grates along with the food spills, because residue holds moisture against metal. On gas tops, let caps dry fully after washing before reinstalling them. Run the vent hood while cooking to move steam away from the controls. If the home sits empty for weeks at a time, run each burner or zone briefly when you return and watch for clicking or a slow response before a big meal depends on it.
Village street parking runs from 30 minutes to three hours and is actively enforced, so tell us if your building has a loading zone or a guest spot. For high-rise condos, find out whether the HOA requires elevator reservations, contractor paperwork or specific service hours, and pass that along when you book. On the day, clear the counter and the cabinet below the cooktop. Have the model and serial number ready, plus a note on which zone or burner acts up and a photo of any display message. If you smell gas, leave the unit, call SDG&E and wait for their all-clear before anyone works on it.
Corrosion changes the math. A single corroded igniter or switch on a gas cooktop is a quick, sensible repair. When several connectors and a board are corroded on an older induction or radiant unit, one repair can be followed by another, and replacement may be the better call. We'll show you what the corrosion looks like and which parts it affects. If you go ahead, the $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Hot surface - not an error. It stays on until the glass cools below roughly 150F. Only an HS that never clears on a cold top merits service.
LG resolves cooktop F-codes per model rather than in one public table. Photograph the code; the visit reads it against your exact model's service data.
On the underside of the cooktop, from the cabinet below - or on the installation paperwork's duplicate label.
No - the STUDIO gas tops are mechanical with spark ignition. Diagnosis is direct: electrodes, modules, valves.
Pan material and diameter first - induction needs ferrous cookware of sufficient size. If proper pans go undetected, the zone's sensor and module are tested.
Damp marine air can settle on burner caps, electrodes and touch surfaces overnight. On gas models that causes clicking; on touch-controlled models it can cause phantom key presses or shutdowns. If the problem fades as the day dries out, moisture is the likely trigger, but repeated episodes can signal a switch or board that needs replacing.
Outages and voltage sags can stress electronic control boards, especially on induction models. When power returns, if the cooktop won't respond or shows an unusual display, write down what you see and call us rather than cycling the breaker over and over. We test the board and the supply before replacing anything.
Yes. We schedule around building rules such as elevator bookings and set service hours. Tell us the building's requirements when you book so the technician arrives with the right paperwork and a plan for parking, and let the front desk or manager know to expect us.
A clean, dry cooktop matters more than a cover. Before leaving, clean the glass, dry the controls and make sure the gas burner caps are seated. A breathable cover can keep dust off, but avoid anything that traps moisture against the surface. When you return, test each zone or burner briefly.
