LG dishwashers
LG dishwashers report faults in a compact two-letter dialect that LG documents openly: IE for fill, OE for drain, AE for leaks, HE and tE for the heating side. The codes are direct-drive-era honest - each names a subsystem, and each has an official first step before anyone opens the machine.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Top-control models adding TrueSteam and Dynamic Dry on the upper trims.
The STUDIO dishwashers with height-adjustable third rack and premium finishes.
LG's brushless wash motor - the platform's quiet, long-warranty heart.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Heater, vent and rinse-aid dosing - the condensation-dry reality, tested in order.
The OE path: filter, sump, pump, hose - plus the air-gap check.
IE territory - valve, line, fill valve.
San Diego hard water versus detergent and rinse settings - adjusted before parts.
Latch and hinge tension on top-control doors - a mechanical fix.
The TrueSteam generator and its water path have their own service points.
Series and model numbers
One code dialect across the line - what changes by model is the hardware behind it: steam generators and third racks join the map on upper trims.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the right side edge of the door panel, visible when the door is open. Photograph it with the code showing on the display. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
LG diagnostics
IE, OE, AE/E1, HE and tE meanings are verified against LG USA's official support library. Codes whose meanings vary by generation are handled per model rather than flattened into one blog-style table.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for LG dishwashers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, wash, drain, drying, controls, leaks, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves dishwashers across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how dishwashers age here.
La Jolla kitchens run heavily to integrated, panel-ready dishwashers - Bosch, Miele, Cove - installed flush into custom cabinetry from the Shores to the Village. Hard water leaves film on glassware and scale in spray arms, and open-plan coastal homes make new noises impossible to ignore. Service here means protecting the panels and the finish while fixing the machine underneath.
La Jolla kitchens carry a high share of panel-integrated dishwashers - Bosch, Miele, Cove. They are diagnosed and repaired in place, cabinetry untouched.
White film on glassware in 92037 usually traces to hard water and dosing; rinse-aid settings and scale are reviewed before parts are replaced.
In open-plan coastal homes a new noise matters. Pumps and spray behavior are compared against the model's normal sound signature.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
In a La Jolla condo tower, a dishwasher leak is rarely only your problem. Water that escapes an LG's base pan can travel into the unit below. That makes the AE/E1 leak alarm, which lifts a float and starts the drain pump, the code to take most seriously here. The city's very hard water, around 237 to 243 mg/L, and homes that sit empty between visits add their own wear, from scaled heaters to dried-out gaskets and sump odor.
Buildings like 939 Coast Blvd, a 164-unit oceanfront tower from 1966, stack kitchens directly above one another, so a slow leak from a door gasket or cracked hose can become a shared ceiling problem. LG's float switch is designed to catch water in the base pan and trigger AE, but it can't fix the source. Occupancy is the second factor. Whole-home short-term rentals in the City of San Diego need a Tier 3 license, capped at 1% of housing units with at least 90 days of use a year. Homes used seasonally, or left for long trips, face the same issue as rentals between bookings: a dishwasher that sits idle for weeks lets its door gasket dry and the water in its sump go stale, bringing odor and seepage when it restarts. Third is chemistry. The City of San Diego's 2025 report shows averages of 237 mg/L from Alvarado, 242 from Miramar and 243 from Otay, all very hard by USGS standards; the city doesn't publish which plant serves a given La Jolla street. Calcium coats the heating element and inlet valve, feeding HE heater faults and IE fill errors.
Symptom: AE or E1 on the display, the drain pump runs continuously, and there may be dampness at the toe kick. Cause: An unlevel unit, a dirty or damaged door gasket, a blocked or cracked spray arm, the wrong detergent, or a leaking hose or sump. Fix: Shut off the supply valve. LG advises fixing the obvious causes and drying the base 24 to 48 hours; in a stacked building, have the leak traced first.
Symptom: HE heater error or tE thermal error; dishes come out cool and wet, or the cycle stops. Cause: A heater or thermistor fault, a heater that isn't heating, or water temperature beyond limits (above 149°F for HE, 194°F for tE). Scale on the heater adds stress. Fix: Power-cycle once. If the code returns, we test the heater, thermistor and board and replace the failed part.
Symptom: IE after 10 minutes, with little water in the tub. Cause: A partly closed valve, pressure outside 20 to 120 psi, a drain hose installed below 10 inches that siphons water out, or a scaled inlet valve. Fix: We correct the drain-hose height, check pressure and replace a restricted inlet valve.
Symptom: A stale smell on opening the door, or drips near the gasket on the first cycle back. Cause: Water left standing in the sump and a door gasket that dried out while the machine sat unused. Fix: Clean the filter, wipe the gasket and run a hot cycle. If the gasket is cracked or the smell persists, we replace the gasket and inspect the sump.
Part-time occupancy calls for a short routine at both ends of a trip. Before a long absence, clean the filter, run an empty hot cycle and leave the door slightly open so the gasket and tub dry instead of sitting sealed and damp. Closing the supply valve under the sink is a sensible precaution in a stacked building. When you return, reopen the valve, check for drips and run a rinse before loading. Year-round residents should focus on scale: keep rinse aid topped up and descale periodically.
Many condo buildings set contractor hours and ask for elevator bookings or proof of coverage. Send us your HOA's requirements when you schedule. In the Village, street parking is limited to between 30 minutes and three hours and is enforced, so a loading zone or guest space helps. At the Shores, overflow beach parking spills onto residential streets. On the day, unload the racks, clear the sink cabinet and note the code and the cycle stage. If water reached the floor or a neighbor's ceiling, tell us when booking.
A dishwasher that runs only part of the year puts fewer hours on its motors, so repairs to pumps, valves, heaters and gaskets usually make strong sense. Leak repairs are worth doing promptly in a condo regardless of the machine's age. The exception is an older unit that needs both a main wash motor and a control board; that combination may favor replacement. We explain the tested fault and the parts it needs so the decision is yours.

We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
A drain error - officially, most often food debris in the filter or an installation issue. Clean the filter first; a persisting OE means pump or drain-path service.
A leak inside the machine has tripped the base float switch. Close the water supply and book - the code stays until the leak is found and fixed.
On the right side edge of the door panel, visible when the door is open.
Codes like AE report a physical condition - water in the base pan - not a software state. The condition has to be repaired, then the code clears.
Yes - the STUDIO machines share the code dialect and inverter drive with the LDT line, with their own trim-level parts.
Turn the dishwasher off and close the supply valve under the sink. Wipe up visible water, check the cabinet, and let your neighbor below or the building manager know if water may have traveled. LG advises drying the base pan for 24 to 48 hours, but in a stacked building it's wiser to have the leak source found before running it again.
Water left in the sump goes stale and the door gasket dries while the machine sits. Clean the filter, wipe the gasket and run a hot empty cycle. If the odor persists or the gasket looks cracked or flattened, it may need replacing.
HE is a heater error: the heater isn't heating, a thermistor has failed, or water is above 149°F. tE is a thermal error tied to water above 194°F. Try one power cycle. If either code returns, the heater, thermistor or board needs testing.
Not necessarily. At about 14 grains per gallon the water is very hard, but rinse aid, the right detergent dose and periodic descaling protect a dishwasher well. A whole-home softener is a bigger decision; if you already have one, tell the technician so detergent settings can be matched.
