LG dishwashers
LG dishwashers report faults in a compact two-letter dialect that LG documents openly: IE for fill, OE for drain, AE for leaks, HE and tE for the heating side. The codes are direct-drive-era honest - each names a subsystem, and each has an official first step before anyone opens the machine.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

LG's brushless wash motor - the platform's quiet, long-warranty heart.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Heater, vent and rinse-aid dosing - the condensation-dry reality, tested in order.
The OE path: filter, sump, pump, hose - plus the air-gap check.
IE territory - valve, line, fill valve.
San Diego hard water versus detergent and rinse settings - adjusted before parts.
Latch and hinge tension on top-control doors - a mechanical fix.
The TrueSteam generator and its water path have their own service points.
Series and model numbers
One code dialect across the line - what changes by model is the hardware behind it: steam generators and third racks join the map on upper trims.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the right side edge of the door panel, visible when the door is open. Photograph it with the code showing on the display. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
LG diagnostics
IE, OE, AE/E1, HE and tE meanings are verified against LG USA's official support library. Codes whose meanings vary by generation are handled per model rather than flattened into one blog-style table.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for LG dishwashers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, wash, drain, drying, controls, leaks, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
The City of Poway's own water FAQ warns that calcium leaves white spots on dishes and builds up on fixtures, and its 2024 report put average hardness at 236 mg/L, about 13.8 grains per gallon. For an LG dishwasher, that mineral load settles on the heater, the inlet valve and the spray-arm jets. Over time it turns into cloudy glassware, slow fills and heater faults. In Poway's larger family homes, where the dishwasher runs often, scale builds that much faster.
Poway treats its own water at the Lester J. Berglund plant, with up to 99.5% of the raw supply imported through the County Water Authority and Lake Poway making up the rest. Lake Poway itself tested at 242 mg/L, and the distribution-system average of 236 mg/L counts as very hard on the USGS scale. Inside an LG, heated water drops calcium fastest where it gets hottest and where it squeezes through small openings. The heater and its thermistor get coated, making HE faults more likely. The inlet valve screen narrows until the machine can't reach its fill level within 10 minutes and shows IE. QuadWash spray-arm jets clog, and LG lists blocked or cracked spray arms among the causes of the AE leak code, since misdirected spray can find its way past the door. Household size compounds all of it. Poway averages 2.9 people per home, many in four- or five-bedroom houses, so dishwashers here run often. Most homes date from 1970 to 1999, and some kitchens still have original supply valves and drain plumbing under the sink, which is worth checking whenever a new dishwasher goes in.
Symptom: IE after 10 minutes; the tub holds only a shallow puddle. Cause: A scale-restricted inlet valve, a partly closed supply valve, pressure outside 20 to 120 psi, or a drain hose mounted below 10 inches that siphons water out. Fix: We check supply pressure and hose height first, then replace the inlet valve if its flow is restricted.
Symptom: HE code, with cool, wet dishes and cloudy glassware at the end of the cycle. Cause: A failed heater or thermistor, or a heater that isn't reaching temperature. Scale insulates and stresses the element. Fix: Power-cycle once. If HE returns, we test the heater and thermistor and replace the failed part, checking the board if both test good.
Symptom: AE or E1 on the display and the drain pump running; water under the tub. Cause: Blocked or cracked spray arms redirecting water, a dirty gasket, an unlevel unit, the wrong detergent, or a hose or sump leak. Fix: Clear or replace the spray arms and clean the gasket. Let the base dry 24 to 48 hours; if AE returns, we locate and repair the leak.
Symptom: Water left in the tub and OE showing. Cause: Filter packed with food and mineral grit, a kinked drain hose, a blocked disposal inlet or a worn pump. Fix: Clean the filter and check the hose. We clear the disposal connection and replace the pump if it tests weak.
With water this hard, rinse aid isn't optional. It helps water sheet off glass instead of drying into spots, and it reduces the film that builds on the tub. Pair it with the right detergent dose: too little leaves film behind, while hand soap of any amount causes suds. Descale on a regular schedule, and check the spray-arm holes every time you clean the filter. If glassware turns cloudy despite rinse aid, scale may already be on the heater, and that's worth a service check.
Most Poway homes are detached houses with a driveway, which keeps access simple; tell us about any gate, long private drive or dogs on the property. Clear the sink cabinet and unload the racks. Useful details for booking: the model and serial number, the code shown, whether the cycle stops early or finishes with wet, spotty dishes, and whether the house has a water softener. With that information, the technician can check the inlet valve, heater and spray arms and usually arrives with the right parts.
Scale damage usually lands on replaceable parts: inlet valves, heaters, thermistors and spray arms. Those are routine LG repairs, and replacing them on a sound machine is normally good value. What tips the decision toward replacement is an older unit that also needs a main wash motor and a control board. Once we've tested the machine, we'll tell you exactly which parts are affected and what the realistic options are.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across Poway (ZIP 92064, 92074). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
A drain error - officially, most often food debris in the filter or an installation issue. Clean the filter first; a persisting OE means pump or drain-path service.
A leak inside the machine has tripped the base float switch. Close the water supply and book - the code stays until the leak is found and fixed.
On the right side edge of the door panel, visible when the door is open.
Codes like AE report a physical condition - water in the base pan - not a software state. The condition has to be repaired, then the code clears.
Yes - the STUDIO machines share the code dialect and inverter drive with the LDT line, with their own trim-level parts.
Poway's water averages 236 mg/L of hardness, so minerals can dry onto glass after the final rinse. Keep rinse aid filled, use dishwasher detergent at the right dose and descale periodically. If cloudiness appears quickly on a new machine, check that the rinse aid dispenser is actually releasing rinse aid.
IE means the water level wasn't high enough after 10 minutes. LG lists a closed valve, water pressure outside 20 to 120 psi, a drain hose below 10 inches, an unlevel unit or a clogged inlet valve as causes. In hard-water homes, the inlet valve screen deserves a close look.
A softener reduces the calcium that forms scale, which helps protect the heater and inlet valve. If you install one, reduce detergent to suit softer water, since too much can etch glass. Without a softener, rinse aid and regular descaling do most of the work.
Try a power cycle first. If HE doesn't return and dishes come out hot and dry, keep an eye on it. If the code comes back, or dishes are cool and wet, have the heater, thermistor and board tested before scale or a failing part causes further trouble.
