Meltwater from defrost should leave through a drain hole. When the hole freezes or clogs, the water pools and refreezes on the freezer floor. LG links this to the dH code on many models. Thawing helps briefly; the drain and heater need checking.
Water drips from my LG dispenser after use. Normal?
A few drops right after dispensing are normal. A steady drip or a puddle means the inlet valve may not be closing fully, often from scale, or there's a crack in the dispenser tubing. Shut off the supply if it keeps dripping.
Can a new water filter cause a leak?
Yes, if it isn't fully locked in or its seal is damaged. Remove it, check the O-rings, and reinstall until it clicks. If drips continue at the filter head, the head itself may be cracked.
Is a leaking fridge an electrical hazard?
Water near the rear or base can reach wiring and the outlet. If water is near the plug, turn off the breaker before touching anything. Don't pull the unit out with wet hands, and let a technician handle anything near live components.

LG Refrigerator Leaking: Tracing the Water
Shut off the water line to the fridge, dry the area, and check back in an hour. If water returns inside the fresh-food section or freezes on the freezer floor, look at the defrost drain. LG ties that to the dH code when defrost runs too long. If water appears under the doors or near the ice dispenser, the ice maker or ice compartment is the likely source. A wet floor at the back usually means the inlet valve, filter head or supply tubing. Where the water shows up points to the part.
Water Chemistry and Coastal Damp in LG Leaks
An LG with a dispenser or Craft Ice maker has a pressurized water path: supply line, inlet valve, filter head, tubing to the dispenser and ice maker. Every connection is exposed to local water. Hardness varies by district but stays in the hard range almost everywhere. Otay Water District reported 9.4 grains per gallon in 2025, and Cal Am's Coronado system 236 mg/L, about 13.8 gpg. Over time scale builds on the inlet valve screen and seat. A valve that doesn't shut cleanly lets water creep into the ice maker after the fill ends, which overfills the mold and spills ice and water around the compartment. The second water source is the air. In marine-layer months, cool damp air slips in whenever a door opens and freezes on the evaporator. That frost becomes meltwater at every defrost. LG sends it through a drain hole to a pan under the cabinet. If the hole ices over, the water backs up inside instead. Near the beach, salt air can also corrode metal fittings on the supply line over the years, one more reason to check the back of the unit, not just the inside.
Where LG Leaks Start, and the Clues for Each
Blocked defrost drain (often with dH)
Symptom: Water or ice on the freezer floor or under the fresh-food drawers; ice in the drain trough; possibly F dH or r dH on the display. Cause: The drain hole is blocked with ice or debris, or a failed heater or open thermal fuse lets frost refreeze in the drain. Fix: We thaw and clear the drain, then test and replace the heater, thermal fuse or board as needed.
Ice maker and ice compartment
Symptom: Water or ice under the ice compartment door, a puddle below the dispenser, IF or IS codes, ice building up around the maker or chute. Cause: Air leaking into the ice compartment through a poor door seal or misalignment; a failed ice maker fan or sensor. Fix: Manual defrost, then check door leveling and seals. We replace the ice maker fan, sensor or assembly as testing shows.
Inlet valve, filter head or supply tubing
Symptom: Water on the floor at the rear or under the unit, sometimes only while the ice maker fills. Cause: Scale on the valve seat, a cracked plastic line, a loose fitting, or a filter not fully locked into its head. Fix: Reseat or replace the filter; replace the valve or tubing with correct fittings and check pressure afterward.
Condensation from a leaking door seal
Symptom: Beads of water on the door edges or cabinet face, frost inside near the door. Cause: A torn or flattened gasket, or a door that isn't level and doesn't close squarely. Fix: Adjust leveling and hinges; replace the gasket if it is damaged.
Keeping the Water Where It Belongs
Filter changes do double duty on an LG. They protect the flow sensor and keep sediment away from the inlet valve seat. Push each new filter until it locks, then check for drips before closing the cover. Keep the ice compartment door clear so it seals. Once or twice a year, look behind the unit while the ice maker fills. For rentals and vacation homes, turn off the ice maker and the supply valve when the place will be empty, because an overfilling valve can run unnoticed.
