SKS cooktops
SKS tops split into pro rangetops - including the industry's only sous-vide rangetop - and Flex induction cooktops whose 7,000-watt center element boils a quart in about a minute, run from a 7-inch LCD. Codes exist on the knob LEDs and displays; public tables do not, and we work from service data instead.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

36-inch with sous vide (SIS) or all-gas (GS/S) configurations.
36 and 30-inch Flex induction with the 7-inch LCD controller.

Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Precision circuit - diagnosed with reference thermometry.
Detection, size limits and zone electronics in order.
The tablet-like controller is a real, replaceable module.
Ports, caps and the spark system - hands-on.
Ultra-high burners reward correct grate and cap seating.
Dual-supply design: gas and 240V verified before any module verdict.
Series and model numbers
Rangetops share the range's subsystem controllers; induction cooktops run their own LCD platform - the prefix decides the dialect.
Model label
The rating plate sits on the underside or rear of the module - reached from below the counter; the induction cooktops carry it underneath, per the installation instructions. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
SKS diagnostics
Honest status: no public per-code tables exist for SKS tops. Rangetop subsystems mirror the documented range controllers; induction cooktops are diagnosed from display behavior plus service data - never from invented lists.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for SKS cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Alpha Pro serves cooktops across La Jolla - the Village, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Muirlands and the Torrey Pines corridor, plus UC San Diego campus housing. Coastal air, condo logistics and hard county water all shape how cooktops age here.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction, while established homes keep gas - often on kitchen islands with downdraft ventilation. Marine air and enthusiastic cleaning both find their way into burner bases, which is why the endless-clicking igniter is one of the most common cooktop calls in 92037. Zone electronics, cookware detection and moisture issues are separated before any part is named.
Recent La Jolla remodels favor induction. Zone electronics and cookware detection are tested with proper instruments.
Marine air and cleaning moisture cause the classic endless-clicking igniter; drying and evaluation come before part replacement.
Downdraft and island installations shape access and service - mention the setup when booking.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · La Jolla
A cooktop a few blocks from the Cove lives in wet, salty air. On a Signature Kitchen Suite gas unit, that shows up first as a burner that clicks and clicks before it catches, or never catches at all. On an SKS induction top, the same air works slowly on the connectors that link the touch panel to the power board. We repair both types in La Jolla homes, from Bird Rock bungalows to oceanfront condos, and we start by finding which part of the ignition or control chain has actually corroded.
La Jolla sits on a coastal headland, and salt spray is heaviest on the blocks closest to the surf. From May through August the marine layer often hangs on into the afternoon, and coastal relative humidity averages roughly 63 to 75 percent across the year. For a gas cooktop, that damp, salt-laden air matters at the burner. Each sealed burner relies on a small ceramic spark electrode, a wire back to a spark module, and a switch behind each knob. Salt film on the electrode tip weakens the spark. Corrosion at the terminal or the switch contacts can make the module fire constantly or not at all. Induction models trade the flame for electronics, but they still need clean connections: the ribbon cables and plug-in terminals between the glass touch area and the power board can oxidize over time in air like this. The reverse happens on the roughly ten Santa Ana days a year, when humidity can drop to single digits and a dusty, dry wind blows through open windows. We check for both moisture and corrosion before replacing any part.
Symptom: You hear steady ticking, see a weak or orange spark, and smell a brief puff of gas before the burner finally lights, or it never lights. Cause: A salt-crusted electrode, a burner cap sitting slightly off its base, or moisture from a boil-over or foggy morning bridging the spark path. Fix: We dry and seat the caps, clean or replace the electrode, and check the ceramic insulator for hairline cracks that leak the spark to ground.
Symptom: One or all igniters keep sparking even after every knob is turned off. Cause: A switch behind a knob has absorbed moisture or corroded, so the spark module thinks a burner is still being lit. Fix: We test each switch in turn, dry or replace the faulty one, and confirm the module stops sparking once all switches read open.
Symptom: The glass control area responds late, beeps at random, or will not unlock at all. Cause: Water or residue on the panel, or oxidized contacts between the touch board and the main board. Fix: We clean and dry the panel, reseat and inspect the connectors, and replace the touch board only if it fails testing.
Symptom: An induction unit roars under the counter, or the fan grinds and then the zones cut out. Cause: A worn fan motor or debris in the fan housing. Fix: We clear the housing, check the airflow path in the cabinet, and replace the motor when the bearings are worn.
Salt and moisture are the two things you can control a little. Dry the burner caps and bases after every boil-over rather than lighting them wet. Wipe the induction glass and touch area with a soft cloth, never a soaking sponge. If the home sits empty for part of the year, which is common with second homes and licensed rentals here, test every burner before guests arrive, since insects and debris can settle in burner ports during idle months.
Parking takes planning here. Village street spaces are time-limited and enforced, and La Jolla Shores streets fill up in summer, so tell us about a driveway or guest spot when you book. For oceanfront high-rise buildings, let us know about elevator reservations, loading rules and HOA check-in so the visit is not held up at the lobby. Have the model and serial number ready; on most cooktops the label is under the unit or on the chassis. If you smell gas at any point, leave the home and call SDG&E before calling us.
Ignition problems on gas units are usually modest repairs: an electrode, a switch or a spark module. Induction repairs cost more because power boards and glass are the expensive parts. A full replacement starts to make sense when an older induction top has both cracked glass and a failed board. Our $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, tells you which situation you are in before you commit.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across La Jolla - ZIP 92037, plus UC San Diego campus housing (92092, 92093). Share gate codes, elevators, parking or HOA rules when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Yes - on the knob LEDs, using the same subsystem controllers documented for the ranges (induction F33-F45, griddle F51-F59, sous vide F62). Per-code detail is service data, and that is how we read it.
Not necessarily - the 7-inch LCD is its own module. Zones and boards are tested separately from the display.
On the underside of the module, from the cabinet below.
SIS rangetops run gas burners plus 240V induction and sous vide - a fault in either supply mimics appliance failure.
The 7,000W center element depends on healthy electronics and a matched pan - both testable on-site.
Moisture on the electrodes and burner bases gives the spark an easier path to ground. On damp marine-layer mornings, a slightly wet or salt-coated electrode can spark weakly or click several times before lighting. If it happens every day or never clears up once the kitchen warms, the electrode or switch likely needs attention.
Yes, slowly. The coils sit sealed under glass, but the cooktop still relies on plug-in connections between the touch controls, the power board and the cooling fan. Over years, salty damp air can oxidize those contacts. Intermittent control faults are the common sign, and cleaning or reseating connectors sometimes resolves them.
Check your purchase date and the SKS warranty terms. If it is covered, the brand's own service network is usually the right first call, since Alpha Pro is an independent company. Once coverage ends, we repair SKS cooktops directly and can help you decide whether a given fault is worth fixing.
Yes. We just need to know the building's rules in advance: elevator booking, loading zone limits, and whether the HOA needs a certificate of insurance. Sharing that at booking keeps the appointment on time and avoids a second trip. Tell us, too, if the unit is on a high floor.
