Sub-Zero ice machines
Sub-Zero's UC-15I undercounter ice machine makes clear restaurant-style ice with a water pump, evaporator plate and cutting grid - and no error-code display. Sub-Zero's own troubleshooting is a checklist, and honest service runs the same checklist with instruments, plus the descale San Diego water demands.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.

Same machine behind cabinetry - door weight and alignment matter to service.
Outdoor-rated versions for San Diego patios - coastal air is part of the diagnosis.
Ice makers inside Sub-Zero refrigeration report through the unit's own EC codes.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Power, water, valve, pump - the documented order, then the sealed system.
Water flow and scale first: filter, pump screen and the descale cycle.
Filter age and water quality - clear ice is the platform's whole point.
Cutting grid wires and level - a documented, repairable path.
Coastal patio installs need clean condensers more often, not less.
Drain path and pump - the bin is not refrigerated, so melt must leave.
Series and model numbers
One undercounter platform in four dresses - and a clean split between the UC-15I's checklist world and the EC-coded ice systems inside Sub-Zero refrigerators.
Model label
The UC-15I serial tag is inside on the left side wall (right side on older units), with the rating plate in the upper-left corner of the ice bin. Photograph either - both carry the serial that decides parts. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Sub-Zero diagnostics
Verified: the UC-15I has no error-code display - Sub-Zero's official troubleshooting is checklist-based, and service follows it with instruments. The only coded ice faults in the Sub-Zero world (EC 30) belong to refrigeration units.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Sub-Zero ice machines. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: production rate, water flow, harvest behavior, drainage, controls, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
From established west-side streets to Otay Ranch's new communities, Chula Vista runs every appliance generation - big families, big laundry loads and builder suites hitting their first repairs.
South Bay and East County bring summer heat, hard water and hard-working family appliances - practical repairs with strong parts availability are the local priority.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Chula Vista
An undercounter Sub-Zero ice maker drains every cycle. Melt from the unrefrigerated bin and mineral-laden water from the freezing plate both have to go somewhere, either by gravity to a floor drain or through a pump. When that path is kinked, looped or blocked, water pools in the bin or ends up on the floor. Undercounter units usually sit in kitchen islands, wet bars or backyard kitchens, far from a floor drain, so the drain path is the first thing we check in Chula Vista homes. We also handle the scale and supply issues that come with local water.
Chula Vista has a lot of newer housing. About a third of homes were built in 2000 or later, many in master-planned Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Millenia. An undercounter ice maker in a kitchen island or bar often has no floor drain directly below it, and that decides whether it needs a gravity line with proper fall or a drain pump. Sub-Zero makes both versions: the UC-15I drains by gravity and the UC-15IP has a factory pump. Water supply depends on the district. Otay Water District serves the east side and reported 9.4 grains per gallon in 2025, which is hard. Sweetwater Authority serves the west and central city and reported 193 mg/L, which is very hard. Either way, minerals build up on the freezing plate and inside the drain pump, so both need regular cleaning. Temperature matters too because the bin is not refrigerated. Western Chula Vista is mild, but September brings a mean monthly maximum of 92.4°F, and an outdoor unit in afternoon sun loses stored ice fast. Close to the bay, damp salty air can corrode condenser fins and fasteners on outdoor models.
Symptom: Water collects under the ice, drains slowly or overflows. Cause: A drain line with a kink or loop, a gravity line without enough fall, or a failed pump on a UC-15IP. Fix: We re-route or clear the line and replace the pump if it fails testing. Where there's no gravity drain, we can add Sub-Zero's pump kit, part 7016314. Sub-Zero warranty doesn't cover adding or removing a pump.
Symptom: A puddle under or in front of the unit, or damp cabinetry beside it. Cause: A loose water filter, a leaking supply connection, or a blocked or mis-installed drain line. Fix: We seat the filter, correct drain routing and trace the leak. Supply-line connection repairs may need a plumber.
Symptom: No ice production and a flashing ice indicator on a UC-15I. Cause: Automatic shut-off after repeated long cycles, usually from low water supply or a clogged filter. Fix: We restore supply, wait for restart, and test the valve, bin switch, thermistor and control if it trips again.
Symptom: Cloudy cubes, slow harvests and a pump that sounds strained. Cause: Hard-water minerals from either district collecting on the plate, pump and tubing between cleanings. Fix: We run the Clean and sanitize cycles, clean the pump and drain path, and check production afterward.
Most drain calls can be avoided with a few simple habits at home. Don't store items in the cabinet space where they can press on or kink the drain line. Run the Clean and sanitize cycles every six months, as Sub-Zero specifies, since that also flushes the water system. Clean the front condenser grille every six to twelve months, more often if a dog or cat sleeps nearby. After any service or restart, give the unit 24 hours before judging production.
We'll need access to the front of the unit and, ideally, to the water shutoff and drain connection, which may be in the next cabinet. Clear those spaces before we arrive. If the unit is leaking, shut off the water valve and put towels down. Eastlake, Otay Ranch and other master-planned neighborhoods may have gate codes or guest parking rules, so share those when you book. Send the model and serial numbers and tell us whether the unit is a gravity-drain or pump model if you know.
Leaks and drain problems are almost never a reason to replace an ice maker. Lines, pumps, filters and valves are straightforward, widely stocked parts. Replacement is worth considering only when an older undercounter unit has a sealed-system failure, since an undercounter ice maker is a simpler swap than a built-in refrigerator. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward whatever repair you choose.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across Chula Vista (ZIP 91910, 91911, 91913-91915). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Thin slabs are a water-flow story: spent filter, scaled pump or a weak fill. Filter and descale first - both are San Diego realities - then the water circuit is tested.
No - it has no fault display. Sub-Zero's official troubleshooting is a checklist, and diagnosis follows it with instruments instead of guesses.
San Diego's hard water argues for a scale-removal cycle at least yearly, with the condenser cleaned every 6-12 months per Sub-Zero's guidance.
Inside on the left side wall - right side on older units - with the rating plate in the upper-left corner of the ice bin.
Yes - sealed-system diagnosis with EPA-certified refrigerant handling, once the honest checks rule out water and scale.
Yes. Sub-Zero offers a pump kit that can be added to a UC-15I, or removed from a UC-15IP. Sub-Zero recommends having a technician do it, and its warranty doesn't cover adding or removing the pump. It's the usual solution where no floor drain sits below the unit.
Yes. Sub-Zero notes that some spray and dripping inside the ice-making assembly is part of normal operation. Water outside the unit or on the floor is not normal and usually traces back to the filter, the supply connection or the drain line.
Both districts supply hard water, so the six-month Clean and sanitize schedule applies everywhere. Sweetwater's reported figure is higher than Otay's, so western and central homes may see scale sooner. Cloudy ice or slow harvests are the signal to clean early.
The bin isn't refrigerated, so warm air and sun melt stored ice while the machine tries to replace it. September is Chula Vista's hottest stretch. Shade the unit, keep the condenser clean, and call us if production stays low in cooler weather.
