Service scope

Start with the ice maker and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

No ice or an empty bin

Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.

Small, hollow or irregular cubes

Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.

Slow or reduced production

Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.

Leak, overflow or ice buildup

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.

Noise, repeated cycling or shutdown

Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.

Built-in, undercounter or standalone

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your ice maker type.

Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.

In-refrigerator

Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.

Built-in and undercounter

Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.

Clear-ice machines

Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.

San Diego hard water and ice quality.

Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving the appliance or disconnecting lines.

Water reaching a cord, outlet or electrical area?

Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.

CDC electrical safety

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note when production changed, the ice size or shape, water or ice location, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is built-in, undercounter, standalone, clear-ice or nugget style, and whether a power interruption, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, disconnect water or drain lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or cleaning cycle does not prove the cause has been corrected.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.

Keep routine care model-safe

Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.

Protect the installation

Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.

Our Work

How our ice maker service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

An ice maker code needs the exact model context.

No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Before requesting service

Helpful ice maker-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in Chula Vista?

We take requests across Chula Vista (ZIP 91910, 91911, 91913-91915). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset an ice maker after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

What should I note before an ice maker visit?

Record when production changed, the ice shape, any leak location, sounds and the complete display message. Share the model label only if it is safely visible.

Should I chip ice, disconnect a line or open a panel?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant or electrical parts, disconnect water or drain lines or bypass controls. Describe what is safely visible without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Why is my ice cloudy even with a new filter?

Most refrigerator filters target taste, odor and particles, not the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Cloudy ice in a refrigerator is usually just trapped air and minerals and is normal. In a clear-ice machine, cloudiness means the water system is due for cleaning, or the minerals in Chula Vista's supply are building up faster than the schedule assumes.

Does the east side or the west side of Chula Vista have harder water?

Both are hard. Sweetwater Authority, serving western and central Chula Vista, reported about 193 mg/L in 2025, which is very hard. Otay Water District, serving the east side, reported about 9.4 grains per gallon, which is hard. Sweetwater customers can expect scale on valves and plates a little sooner.

My ice maker drips water into the bin. Is that a problem?

Yes. A valve that doesn't close fully lets water seep into the mold or fill tube after the cycle ends. That water freezes into clumps in the bin or plugs the fill tube entirely. It often starts with mineral scale holding the valve seat open. Replacing the valve is a routine repair.

Which ice makers and brands do you repair?

We work on ice makers built into refrigerators and on standalone undercounter and clear-ice machines, from brands like Whirlpool, GE and KitchenAid to Sub-Zero and U-Line. We are an independent service company, so we are not tied to any one manufacturer's service network.

Ice Maker Repair Across Chula Vista's Two Water Districts

Where you live in Chula Vista decides what flows into your ice maker. The east side, including Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Rolling Hills Ranch, is served by Otay Water District. Western and central neighborhoods get their water from Sweetwater Authority. Both supplies are hard, and an ice maker concentrates whatever minerals the water carries, one small fill at a time. That is why slow fills, shrinking cubes and cloudy ice show up so often here. We repair in-refrigerator ice makers and standalone clear-ice machines on both sides of town.

How Otay and Sweetwater Water Treat an Ice Maker

Sweetwater Authority's 2025 water quality report puts average hardness at 193 mg/L, roughly 11.3 grains per gallon, which lands in the very hard range. Otay Water District's 2025 figure is about 9.4 grains per gallon, classed as hard. Otay buys treated water from several regional plants and blends it, so the exact mineral content at your tap can shift. For an ice maker, either number matters in three places. First is the inlet valve: a fine mesh screen sits at its entrance, and calcium settles there until the valve can no longer deliver a full charge of water in its timed window, so cubes come out small or hollow. Second is the fill tube, where a slow drip from a scaled valve can freeze into a plug. Third, on undercounter clear-ice machines, water runs over a chilled plate and the rejected minerals stay in the circulating water. Harder water coats that plate sooner, sheets freeze thin and the machine asks for cleaning more often. A household of three or more people, which is typical here, empties the bin faster and cycles every one of those parts harder.

Ice Maker Problems Tied to Local Water and Heavy Use

Small, hollow or missing cubes

Symptom: Crescents come out thin, the bin barely fills, and the water dispenser is slow too. Cause: An overdue filter, scale on the inlet valve screen, a half-closed shutoff or low supply pressure. Whirlpool calls for 30 to 120 psi, ideally 40 to 80. Fix: We measure pressure, replace the filter, open or replace the shutoff and install a new inlet valve if the screen is scaled.

Frozen fill tube

Symptom: The freezer is cold but the ice maker stops producing. Cause: A scaled or worn valve lets water trickle after each fill, and that trickle freezes inside the tube. Fix: We thaw and clear the tube and replace the dripping valve so the plug does not re-form.

Clear-ice machine making thin sheets or cloudy ice

Symptom: Low output, partial cubes, white cloudy ice, or a cleaning light that comes on early. Cause: Mineral scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dusty front condenser, or a loose drain cap that lets the water pan empty. Fix: We run a cleaning cycle with a nickel-safe cleaner, clean the condenser, tighten the drain cap and verify pressure.

Sheet won't cut or release

Symptom: A slab of ice sits on the cutter grid and never turns into cubes. Cause: An open cutter-grid heater wire or fuse, a failed hot-gas valve, a harvest sensor or the control board. Fix: We test grid continuity, the valve and the sensors, then replace the grid or board as needed.

Stretching the Time Between Ice Maker Repairs

The filter and the cleaning schedule do most of the work. On a refrigerator, a fresh filter protects the valve and keeps flow up. On a standalone clear-ice machine, run the cleaning cycle when the indicator lights or output drops, using only a cleaner the maker approves; the wrong chemical can damage a nickel-plated evaporator. With water this hard, plan on the short end of the recommended interval. Pet hair and lint also clog the front grille of undercounter units and slow production.

  • Change the refrigerator water filter about every 6 months, or sooner if flow drops
  • Clean a clear-ice machine about every 9 months, earlier on the Sweetwater side of town
  • Brush the front condenser grille of undercounter units every 3 months if pets live in the home
  • Discard the first harvest after any cleaning cycle

Before the Technician Checks Your Ice Maker

Tell us which water district serves your home if you know it; the bill will say Otay or Sweetwater. Note when ice production changed and whether the water dispenser slowed at the same time, since that points toward the supply side. Make sure the shutoff valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink is reachable. For an undercounter machine, clear the cabinet below so we can check the drain or drain pump. A photo of the model and serial label helps us bring the right valve or grid.

Replace the Module or Repair the Machine?

A refrigerator ice maker module is usually a low-cost swap, and a new inlet valve often solves the rest. Standalone clear-ice machines are generally worth repairing, including cutter grids, drain pumps and control boards, because the cabinet is built around them. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older machine, where replacement may make more sense. The $99 diagnostic tells you which case you're in.
