Thermador cooktops
Thermador cooktops split cleanly: gas Masterpiece and Professional tops with the patented Star Burner are mechanical machines with no fault codes, while Freedom and Masterpiece induction tops publish a real, official error table - F codes for zones, E codes for electronics and supply.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
Full-surface induction with the 36-inch flush Freedom platform - cook anywhere on the glass.
30 and 36-inch zoned induction tops (CIT304 / CIT365 families).
Star Burner tops with QuickClean base - pedestal SGSX generation included.
CET-class radiant glass tops - element and switch territory.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Cookware first - flat, magnetic, sized to the zone - then pan-detection electronics.
The full-surface platform diagnoses per module - a documented path.
Moisture, cap seating and electrode gap on Star Burners.
F2-family electronics overheat - cabinet ventilation matters.
Stop using the top; glass is quoted honestly against replacement value.
The Star Burner's ExtraLow cycling is a feature - a simmer that died is a valve story.
Series and model numbers
The prefix decides the dialect: CIT induction tops speak the official code table, SGS gas tops speak through flame and spark - both honest when read correctly.
Model label
The data plate is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; the model also appears on the installation documents. Photograph the full E-Nr line - it decides boards and glass. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Thermador diagnostics
The induction table above is Thermador's own published error-code list for induction cooktops; supply-voltage and connection codes are documented installation faults. Gas tops have no codes by design, and that is stated rather than papered over.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Thermador cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service areas and operating context
Alpha Pro serves Thermador cooktops in communities including La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Poway, and the full San Diego County footprint below — ZIP by ZIP. Installation and room conditions vary from the coast to inland homes.
Recurring condensation, marine exposure, ventilation limits, and visible corrosion can be useful details during repair or maintenance.
Share room conditions, recent heat events, ventilation restrictions, and when the symptom appears.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · San Diego County
Thermador builds three kinds of cooktop, and each one breaks differently. Gas models use the Star burner and, on many, the ExtraLow simmer system. Induction models, including the Freedom line, run on power electronics and report faults as codes. Electric radiant tops sit in between. Across San Diego County, the coast tends to trouble the gas igniters while inland heat and dust test the induction electronics. This page explains the platform, decodes the error codes we see most, and covers how to decide between repair and replacement.
San Diego County packs several climates into 4,526 square miles, and a cooktop reacts to each. Near the coast, May Gray and June Gloom keep kitchens damp from May through August. Moisture and salt on spark electrodes and switch contacts are a known trade cause of clicking and no-spark calls, so gas models dominate coastal service tickets. Five to 15 miles inland the marine layer gives way to sun, and cities like El Cajon average 88.6°F in August. Induction electronics shut zones down when they overheat, and a warm kitchen with a tightly enclosed cabinet below leaves them less margin. Santa Ana winds, about 10 days a year from September to April, bring dust that settles in burner ports and fan intakes, plus gusts that can blow out a low flame. September heat waves also stress the grid; SDG&E hit a record 5,032 MW peak on September 8, 2024, and voltage problems show up on induction models as supply codes. Water hardness, roughly 9 to 16 grains per gallon across the county's utilities, barely touches a cooktop. For neighborhood detail, see our La Jolla, Chula Vista and Poway pages.
Symptom: A zone or the whole cooktop shuts off mid-cook. Cause: F1 and F6 mean a cooking zone overheated. F2, F4, E7015, E8207 and E8208 mean the electronics overheated, on one zone or all. Poor ventilation below the unit and a dirty or failing cooling fan are the usual drivers. Fix: Let it cool. We check clearances, clean and test the fan, then diagnose the power board if codes persist.
Symptom: The cooktop will not start at all. Cause: The first three flag supply voltage out of range, which can follow wiring work or grid trouble. E9011 means the appliance is not connected properly at its terminal block. Fix: An electrician or SDG&E confirms house voltage. We verify the terminal-block connection against the circuit diagram and retest.
Symptom: A feature stops working or a code appears while cooking. Cause: F0/F9: MoveMode or the extended Flex Zone will not engage. F5: hot cookware near the controls. F8: automatic time limit. E7010: no Wi-Fi or hood link. E8204–E8206: wireless sensor battery, link or sensor fault. dE: demo mode. Fix: Most clear with the owner steps Thermador lists; F0/F9 need service.
Symptom: Star burners spark constantly or will not light. Cause: Caps off their notches, wet igniters, a knob stuck in LIGHTING, or a closed gas supply valve. ExtraLow sparking during cycling is normal. Fix: Reseat caps and dry igniters. Then we test ignition switches, electrodes and the spark module.
Each Thermador platform has its own weak point, so match the care to the type. Gas owners should keep caps aligned, tabs in notches, and wipe igniters with a damp cotton swab and let them dry after any spill. Induction owners should use magnetic pans with bases between 3.5 and 13 inches and keep the space under the unit open for airflow. Everyone should keep hot pans off the control area, which Thermador flags with F5. Electric radiant owners should restart the unit once after a D or E code before calling.
We start by identifying the platform and model. Gas cooktops carry prefixes such as SGS, SGSP, SGSX and SGSXP, with 305 or 365 marking the 30 or 36 inch width. Send the full model number from the label under the cooktop, a photo of any code, and a note on when the fault appears. Tell us about gate codes, condo elevator bookings or military-housing rules when you book. Clear the cabinet below if possible. If you smell gas beyond a brief whiff at ignition, leave and call SDG&E first.
Igniters, switches, spark modules, ExtraLow controls and cooling fans are routine repairs that rarely approach replacement cost. The harder call is an older induction model with a failed power or control board, where the part cost can approach a new unit. Two checks come first: whether the board is still available, and whether a replacement's cutout would fit your counter without stone work. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
The cooking zone overheated and switched off to protect the surface - officially documented. Let it cool; if it repeats with normal cookware, the zone's inductor and sensor get tested.
Usually moisture after cleaning or a misseated burner cap. Dry and reseat first; persistent clicking is electrode or spark-module territory.
No - they are mechanical with spark ignition. The induction line is the coded one, with an official table.
On the underside of the cooktop from the cabinet below, and on the installation documents.
Yes - the Freedom platform is diagnosed per module, with the official code table as the starting map.
The burner head is shaped like a star, with many small flame ports around its points. The center burner on some models reaches 18,000 BTU. The trade-off is more small ports to keep clean and a cap that must sit exactly in its notches to light reliably.
Yes. In 2007, about 2,000 Thermador ceramic cooktops, models CIT302DS/01 and CIT362DS/01, were recalled because the elements could turn on by themselves when switched off. If you own one of those models, check the recall on cpsc.gov or the manufacturer site before using it.
Thermador rates ExtraLow Select, used on SGSX models, at five simmer settings reaching down to 204 BTU. It achieves that by cycling the flame on and off, so occasional relighting is part of normal operation. A flame that dies and will not relight is a fault.
Yes. Thermador has been owned by BSH, the Bosch and Siemens appliance group, since 1998, and its US headquarters is in Irvine, California. We are an independent service company and repair Thermador, Bosch and many other brands with the same diagnostic approach.
