GE sells freezers in two basic designs, and each fails in its own way. Manual-defrost chest and upright models are simple but frost up. Frost-free uprights add a fan, heater and defrost controls that can quit. San Diego County's range of climates adds another layer: a freezer in a salty beach garage has different problems from one in an El Cajon garage near 100°F. Fix: Replace the relay or overload after testing the compressor windings. Improve ventilation or relocate the unit.
Chest models: sealed-system leak in the foamed-in condenser
Symptom: Slow warming over weeks, a compressor that never stops and only partial frost on the liner. Cause: Condenser tubing runs inside the cabinet walls. Coastal rust or ice-chipping damage can open a leak there. Fix: Leak search first. Accessible leaks can be repaired with a new drier and a weighed charge; in-wall leaks usually mean replacement.
