Clairemont coverage
Clairemont's mid-century homes often pair original kitchens with newer appliances - installation quirks from decades of remodels are normal, and we work with them daily.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated freezer repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.
Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.
Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.
Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.
Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.
Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.
Safe owner checks
Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.
Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.
Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Check the manual or the label for a stated ambient range; garage-ready units often list something like 0 F to 110 F, depending on the maker. Many standard freezers are rated only for indoor rooms. If yours is not rated and sits in a hot Clairemont garage, expect long run times in late summer and consider moving it indoors or planning for a rated unit.
A slow, steady warm-up with the compressor running nonstop and a partial frost pattern often points to a refrigerant leak, and on chest models the tubing is frequently inside the walls. We confirm with a leak search first, because a blocked condenser or failing fan can look similar and costs far less.
Federal food-safety guidance says food that still contains ice crystals or has stayed at 40 F or below can be refrozen. Keep the lid closed during the outage: a full freezer holds about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. If the freezer did not restart properly once power returned, call us.
Please don't. Chest freezers run refrigerant tubing right behind the inner walls, and a screwdriver or ice pick can puncture it. That turns a free defrost into a leak that is often not economical to repair. Unplug the unit, drain the melt water through the drain cap, and let it thaw on its own.
Local notes · Clairemont
In Clairemont, the standalone freezer usually lives in the garage. The original tract homes went up in the early 1950s with two-car attached garages, and many of those garages now hold a chest or upright freezer. It is a rough spot for one: late-summer heat on the mesa, dust, and a circuit shared with the washer or power tools. We repair chest, upright and built-in freezers from brands like Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool and Sub-Zero.
A freezer has to move heat from a 0 F box into the room around it. As the garage warms, the temperature lift gets bigger, the compressor runs longer, and capacity falls. Clairemont's mesa sits past the point where the marine layer reliably cools things; normals from Montgomery Field show a typical September topping out near 98 F on its hottest day, with records above 105 F in July, August and September. Inside a closed garage the air is often hotter still. GE rates its garage-ready freezers for 0 F to 110 F ambient; a standard unit may be out of spec on those afternoons. Chest freezers bring a second issue: many use a skin condenser built into the cabinet walls, so heat leaves through the sides. Push the chest tight against boxes or a wall and it cannot shed that heat. Power is the third factor. During the September 2024 heat wave SDG&E hit a record 5,032 MW peak and about 13,000 customers lost power at the peak, and a freezer on a long extension cord or shared garage circuit also sees low voltage during hard starts.
Symptom: Clicking every few minutes, a humming cabinet, soft food and hot side walls. Cause: High garage ambient plus low voltage from an extension cord or shared circuit makes starts hard, and the relay or overload gives out. Fix: We test the relay, overload and windings, and recommend a dedicated grounded outlet. A failed compressor is sealed-system work that only a technician should do.
Symptom: Runs constantly and the cabinet sides feel very warm. Cause: Chest walls wedged against storage, or an upright's fan-cooled coil packed with garage dust, dryer lint or pet hair. Fix: Restore side and rear clearance, clean the coil and fan, and verify the condenser fan motor on upright models.
Symptom: Temperature climbs over days, frost appears behind the rear panel, and water shows up on the floor after a thaw. Cause: A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, sensor or timer, or an iced-over drain. Fix: We thaw the evaporator, test each defrost part, replace what failed and clear the drain.
Symptom: The chest lid won't stay up or won't close flat; frost forms in a band along the seal. Cause: Worn gasket, broken hinge springs, or a cabinet sitting out of level on a sloped garage slab. Fix: New gasket or hinges and a leveled cabinet so the lid seats evenly.
Manual-defrost chest and upright freezers need a defrost when frost reaches 1/4 to 1/2 inch; beyond that the unit wastes energy and the lid stops sealing. Keep the freezer at 0 F and check it with an inexpensive appliance thermometer. If the power goes out, keep the lid shut: a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24 hours. Food that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at 40 F or below, can be refrozen.
Garage calls are straightforward in most of Clairemont: park in the driveway, open the garage door, and we can work. Clear enough space for us to reach the back and sides of the cabinet, and if the freezer is still partly cold, have a cooler ready so food can come out during testing. Tell us whether it is chest, upright or built-in, and read the model and serial label, usually on the back or inside the lid. A photo of the frost pattern or the label saves time.
Relays, thermostats, defrost parts, fans, hinges and gaskets are nearly always worth fixing. A refrigerant leak inside the walls of an inexpensive chest freezer is the classic exception: the tubing is buried in foam, and replacement usually wins. Built-in column freezers are the opposite and are almost always repaired. We explain which case you have during the $99 diagnostic visit.
