Coronado coverage
Coronado is an island in practice - salt air on every exposed panel, historic homes beside naval housing, and ferry-and-bridge logistics we plan around every week.
South Bay and East County bring summer heat, hard water and hard-working family appliances - practical repairs with strong parts availability are the local priority.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated freezer repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.
Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.
Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.
Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.
Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.
Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.
Safe owner checks
Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.
Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.
Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

If the freezer traveled upright, a short wait is plenty. If it was laid on its side, let it stand upright longer so compressor oil drains back out of the lines; your owner's manual gives the maker's figure. Starting it too soon can make the compressor labor and may shorten its life.
Surface rust alone isn't a failure, but it's a warning. On many chest models the condenser tubing runs just inside the outer steel. If rust eats through, that tubing can corrode and leak. Get the freezer off the bare slab, keep it dry, and call us if it starts running longer or warming up.
Keep the door closed. A full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full freezer about 24 hours. Food that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at 40 degrees or below, can be refrozen. If the freezer doesn't recover within a day after power returns, call for service.
It's better not to. Long or light-duty cords cause a voltage drop when the compressor starts, and the start relay and overload then work harder and fail sooner. A dedicated, grounded outlet is the right setup. If your garage outlet trips often, have an electrician look at the circuit.
Local notes · Coronado
Coronado is a Navy town, and census data shows about 21% of residents moved in the previous year. Freezers get unplugged, tipped onto dollies, pushed into new garages and restarted, and each move is a chance for a door hinge to bend or an oil-slugged compressor to start hard. Add salt air reaching the garage from the ocean and the bay, and chest and upright freezers here take a steady beating. We repair chest, upright and built-in column freezers, from Frigidaire and GE to Whirlpool and Sub-Zero.
A freezer pulls heat out of the food and dumps it through a condenser, along with the heat from the compressor itself. How well it does that depends on where it sits. Many Coronado garages face damp marine air from May into August, and that air carries salt. On an upright freezer with a fan-cooled coil underneath, salt and dust coat the fins and the fan motor bearings. Chest freezers are built differently. Their condenser tubing often runs inside the outer cabinet skin, so the steel shell is the heat exchanger, and a chest cabinet can rust from the bottom up where it sits on a damp slab. Frequent household moves cause their own trouble. A freezer laid on its side can leave oil in the refrigerant lines, and plugging it in right away makes the compressor work harder. Unlevel floors and long extension cords lead to door gaps, frost and low-voltage starts. Outages matter too: during the September 2024 heat wave, about 13,000 SDG&E customers lost power at the peak.
Symptom: Rust bubbles along the bottom edge, then a slow loss of cold over weeks. Cause: Salt and moisture attack the steel skin, and the in-wall condenser tubing behind it can corrode and leak. Fix: We run a leak search. Leaks in accessible tubing can be repaired with a new drier and weighed charge; in-wall leaks usually mean replacement.
Symptom: A click and hum, then silence, then again. Cause: A failed start relay or overload, or low voltage from a shared garage circuit or extension cord after a move. Fix: We test the relay, overload and compressor windings and ask for a dedicated grounded outlet. Compressor replacement is sealed-system work for a technician.
Symptom: Thick frost, a lid that won't seal, or a frost-free upright slowly warming. Cause: Gasket gaps, humid garage air, or on frost-free models a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control. Fix: Manual-defrost units need defrosting at 1/4 to 1/2 inch of frost. On frost-free models we test and replace the defrost part and clear the drain.
Symptom: The chest lid drops, or the upright door won't close flush. Cause: Broken counterbalance hinge springs or a door knocked out of line during a move, plus an unlevel floor. Fix: We replace hinges or gaskets and level the cabinet so the seal closes evenly.
The simplest protection is keeping the condenser clean and the cabinet dry underneath. In a coastal garage, set a chest freezer on a few inches of spacers or a plastic pallet so air moves under it, and wipe salt residue off exposed tubing and hinges. Keep the freezer at 0 degrees and check it with an appliance thermometer. During an outage, a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24 hours, if the door stays shut.
Tell us whether the freezer is a chest, an upright or a built-in column, and where it sits. Garage units should have a clear path to the back or sides. We drive over the bridge or up the Silver Strand, and we leave room in the schedule for traffic. Take a photo of the rating label, usually inside the lid or door, and note when the problem started and whether the unit was moved recently. On-base family housing residents should first contact Liberty Military Housing, which handles their maintenance.
Relay, thermostat, defrost and fan repairs are usually worth doing on any freezer. The math changes with sealed-system leaks. On a basic chest freezer, a leak inside the cabinet wall often costs more to fix than the freezer is worth, so replacement is the honest answer. Built-in column and drawer freezers are nearly always repaired, because they are expensive and tied into cabinetry. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward any repair we make.
