El Cajon coverage
El Cajon summers are the hottest work our refrigerators' condensers see - garage units, dusty valley air and hard water define the East County service pattern.
South Bay and East County bring summer heat, hard water and hard-working family appliances - practical repairs with strong parts availability are the local priority.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated freezer repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.
Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.
Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.
Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.
Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.
Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.
Safe owner checks
Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.
Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.
Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

You can, but a standard freezer is not designed for garage air that nears or passes 100°F. It will run longer and wear faster. Garage-ready models are built for wider temperature ranges, such as GE's 0°F to 110°F rating. If you keep a standard unit, give it clearance, shade and a dedicated outlet.
Keep the lid or door closed. A full freezer holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at 40°F or below, can be refrozen. Call us early rather than opening the unit repeatedly to check.
Many chest freezers route the condenser tubing through the outer walls, so warm sides are normal. Very hot sides with nonstop running suggest the unit cannot shed heat, often because it is pressed against a wall or boxes. If clearing space does not help, the start parts or refrigerant charge need checking.
It depends on where the leak is. A leak we can reach is repaired with a new filter drier and a measured charge. Leaks inside the walls of a chest freezer usually are not practical to fix. Built-in freezers from brands like Sub-Zero, Thermador and GE Monogram are nearly always worth repairing.
Local notes · El Cajon
In El Cajon the spare freezer rarely lives in the kitchen. It sits in the garage of a ranch house or the carport storage of a townhome, holding bulk meat and the overflow for a three-person household. Nobody checks it daily, so a failing relay or defrost part can go unnoticed until the food is soft. Garage air here routinely climbs toward 100°F in late summer, which is exactly when a tired freezer gives out. We repair chest, upright and built-in freezers throughout El Cajon and Rancho San Diego.
A freezer has a steeper job than a refrigerator: it must hold 0°F inside while dumping that heat, plus the compressor's own heat, into the room. The hotter the room, the bigger that temperature gap, so run time climbs and cooling capacity drops. In El Cajon the typical hottest day of August reaches about 100°F and the hottest day of September runs even higher, and a closed garage can sit above outdoor temperature. GE rates its garage-ready upright and chest freezers for 0°F to 110°F ambient; a standard model is outside its design range on those days. Chest freezers bring a detail many owners miss. Many use a skin condenser, meaning the hot tubing runs inside the cabinet walls, so the sides feel warm by design and need open space to shed heat. Push a chest tight against a wall or pile boxes against it and the condenser has nowhere to dump heat. Upright frost-free models use a fan-cooled coil at the base instead, which collects the dust that dry Santa Ana days blow under garage doors. Roughly a third of the city's homes were built between 1940 and 1969, and garages of that era can be short on outlets, so freezers often end up on long extension cords or shared circuits. Low voltage is hard on compressor start parts.
Symptom: A click from the back, a short hum, then silence, repeating while the cabinet slowly warms. Cause: A failed start relay or overload, often after heat stress or low voltage from an extension cord or crowded garage circuit; less often, a failed compressor. Fix: We test the relay, overload and compressor windings. Relays are inexpensive; a compressor is sealed-system work done by a technician.
Symptom: The motor never shuts off, the sides feel very hot, and ice cream turns soft. Cause: Dust or pet hair on an upright's condenser, or a chest freezer with no clearance for its in-wall condenser, made worse by high garage temperature. Fix: We clean the coil and fan, restore clearance, and check the condenser fan and start parts. We may suggest relocating the unit.
Symptom: Frost covers the rear panel, air feels weak, and water appears on the floor after a thaw. Cause: A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or sensor, a timer or board fault, or a frozen drain. Fix: We defrost the evaporator, test each defrost component, replace the failed one and clear the drain line.
Symptom: Frost builds along one edge, or a chest lid drops shut or will not close. Cause: A worn gasket, broken counterbalance hinge springs, or a cabinet out of level on a sloped garage slab. Fix: We replace the gasket or hinges and shim the cabinet level so the seal lands evenly.
Keep the unit plugged directly into a grounded outlet, not an extension cord. Give a chest freezer open space on its sides and back, and keep it out of direct sun and away from the water heater. For manual-defrost models, defrost when frost reaches a quarter to half an inch, and never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver, since the tubing sits right behind the liner. An appliance thermometer set inside tells you at a glance whether the box is holding 0°F. If power goes out, a full freezer stays safe about 48 hours with the lid closed, a half-full one about 24.
Most of our El Cajon freezer calls happen in a garage, so we need a clear path to the unit and about two feet of working room around the back or side. If it is boxed in by storage, clearing that before we arrive saves time. If the cabinet is warming, move perishables to coolers before we arrive. Note the model and serial number from the label inside the lid or on the back, and tell us what you heard: clicking, humming, or silence. For apartment and mobile home communities, let us know gate codes and where to park.
Relays, thermostats, defrost parts, fans and gaskets are usually worth repairing on any freezer. A sealed-system leak is different: on an inexpensive chest model, especially one leaking inside the walls, replacement often makes more sense. Built-in column and drawer freezers are almost always repaired. We diagnose first for $99, credited toward the repair, and tell you plainly which side of that line you are on.
