Mission Valley coverage
Mission Valley is condo and apartment country - stacked laundry, compact kitchens, HOA rules and garage access codes are part of nearly every visit.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated freezer repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.
Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.
Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.
Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.
Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.
Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.
Safe owner checks
Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.
Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.
Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

The most common cause is the compressor failing to restart. Restarting against a warm cabinet and high pressure is the hardest moment for a start relay or overload, and a weak one will click and quit. Check that the outlet has power and that no breaker tripped, then call us to test the start components.
You can, but check its rated ambient range first. Standard units are designed for indoor temperatures, and a warm storage room can push them outside spec, leading to long run times and soft food. A garage-ready model is the safer choice in an unconditioned space. Keep it out of direct sun and give it clearance.
Keep the door closed during the outage. A full freezer typically stays safe for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals, or that is at 40 F or below, can be refrozen. When in doubt, check the item with a food thermometer and discard anything that warmed above that.
Yes. An unused freezer with a latching door or heavy lid is an entrapment hazard for children, whether it sits in a storage room or waits for disposal. Remove the door or lid, or have the unit hauled away. If you plan to reuse it later, prop it open so mold does not grow inside.
Local notes · Mission Valley
A freezer rarely gets attention until the ice cream turns soft. In Mission Valley that moment tends to arrive in late summer, when the valley heats up, the grid strains and a marginal unit finally falls behind. The September 2024 heat wave pushed SDG&E to a record 5,032 MW of demand with about 13,000 customers out at the peak. We repair upright, chest and built-in column freezers, from Frigidaire and GE to Whirlpool and Sub-Zero, in condos, townhomes and the deeded storage spaces many buildings provide.
A freezer is a heat pump pointed the wrong way for comfort: it pulls heat out of the cabinet and dumps it, along with the compressor's own heat, into the surrounding room. The warmer that room, the larger the temperature gap the system must climb, and capacity falls as run time rises. When a second freezer lives outside the kitchen, in a parking-garage storage cage, a laundry closet or a patio room, it sits in air that tracks outdoor heat closely. The nearest inland station, Montgomery Field, averages 82.0 F for an August high and sees about 98 F on the hottest day of a typical September. Santa Ana days, roughly ten a year, are hot and bone dry. A standard upright in a warm, dusty storage room can run without rest, and its condenser clogs with the same grit. Then comes the outage. When power returns after a heat-driven event, the compressor restarts against a warm cabinet and high head pressure, which is exactly when a weak start relay or overload gives up. Low voltage on a long extension cord makes that restart harder still.
Symptom: The light is on but the cabinet stays warm; you hear a click every few minutes or a short hum. Cause: A failed start relay or overload that could not start the compressor against high pressure, or low voltage from a shared circuit or extension cord. Fix: We test the relay, overload and compressor windings, replace the start components, and recommend a dedicated grounded outlet.
Symptom: Constant running, hot cabinet sides, soft food on warm days. Cause: Garage dust, dryer lint and pet hair on an upright's fan-cooled coil, or a chest freezer's in-wall condenser pushed tight against a wall. Fix: Clean the coil and fan, restore side and rear clearance, and check the condenser fan motor.
Symptom: Frost builds on the rear panel, the fan ticks, and water appears on the floor after a thaw. Cause: A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or sensor, defrost control, or a frozen drain. Fix: Manual defrost, then test each part, replace the failed one and clear the drain.
Symptom: Heavy frost along the gasket, a lid that will not stay up, or longer run times. Cause: A worn gasket, broken counterbalance hinge springs on a chest lid, or a cabinet out of level on an uneven garage slab. Fix: Replace the gasket or hinges and level the cabinet so the seal closes evenly.
Keep the freezer at 0 F and confirm it with an appliance thermometer instead of trusting the dial. Manual-defrost units should be defrosted when frost reaches a quarter to half an inch. For outages, keep the door shut: a full freezer holds safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals or sits at 40 F or below can be refrozen. A unit kept in a warm storage room should be garage-rated; GE rates its garage-ready freezers for 0 F to 110 F ambient.
If the freezer sits in a building garage or storage room, meet us there or leave clear directions, the gate code and any key we need. Tell us where we can park a service van; underground garages often have height limits, so we may walk in. Have the model and serial number ready, or send a photo of the label, usually inside the lid or on an inner side wall. Let us know whether the outage or the heat came first. Empty or consolidate food into coolers if the unit is already warm.
Relays, thermostats, defrost parts, fans and gaskets are usually worth fixing on any freezer. The harder call is a refrigerant leak. On an inexpensive chest freezer the leak is often inside the wall, and that tubing cannot be reached economically, so replacement tends to win. Built-in column freezers are almost always repaired. The $99 diagnostic tells you which case you are in, and it goes toward the repair.
