Service scope

Start with the freezer and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

Not cold enough or warming

Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.

Heavy frost or recurring ice

Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.

Door, gasket or closure concern

Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.

Water, drain or ice-maker concern

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.

Noise, fan or repeated cycling

Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.

Upright, chest, drawer or built-in

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your freezer type.

Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.

Upright

Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.

Chest

Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.

Built-in and column

Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving or force-defrosting the freezer.

Food warming or power interrupted?

Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.

USDA food-safety guidance

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began, frost or water location, door behavior, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is upright, chest, drawer or built-in and whether a power interruption, door-left-open event, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or defrost attempt does not prove the freezer or stored food is safe after a fault.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.

Protect airflow and door closure

Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.

Use safe frost and food guidance

Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.

Our Work

How our freezer service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

A freezer code needs the exact model context.

No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Service visit and estimate

The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.

The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.

After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Before requesting service

Helpful freezer-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in Point Loma & Ocean Beach?

We take requests across Point Loma & Ocean Beach (ZIP 92106, 92107). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset a freezer after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

How should I handle food if the freezer is warming?

Keep the door closed as much as practical and use official time-and-temperature guidance. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.

Should I chip ice or open sealed-system panels?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant lines or bypass controls. Describe the frost pattern and installation without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Is it fine to keep a regular freezer in a Point Loma garage?

Heat is rarely the limit here the way it is inland, but check the manual's rated ambient range. The bigger risks near the coast are corrosion and humidity. Keep the unit off damp concrete if you can, give it clearance, and watch the cabinet bottom and exposed tubing for rust.

How long will food last in my freezer during a power outage?

Federal food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 hours, if the door stays closed. Food that still has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below can be refrozen. A thermometer inside takes the guesswork out.

Can I chip ice off the freezer walls to speed up defrosting?

Please do not. The cooling tubing sits right under the liner, and a knife or scraper can puncture it. That turns a free defrost into a sealed-system repair or a new freezer. Unplug the unit, let the frost soften, use the drain, and wipe it out.

What should I do with an old freezer I no longer use?

An empty chest freezer or upright in a garage is an entrapment hazard for children. Remove the lid or door, or have the unit hauled away. If you plan to keep it unplugged for a while, prop it open so mold does not grow inside.

Freezer Repair for Point Loma Garages and Kitchens

Point Loma has long ties to the water, from the Portuguese fishing families of Roseville to the boats moored around Shelter Island and La Playa. If you keep a second freezer in the garage for bulk food, bait or a good day's catch, it lives in that air. Garage freezers in a coastal town face a different enemy than inland ones: less heat, more salt and moisture. We repair chest, upright and built-in freezers from GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool to Sub-Zero and Thermador.

Salt, Damp Garages and How a Freezer Rejects Heat

A freezer is a heat pump. It pulls heat out of the cabinet and dumps it, plus the compressor's own heat, through a condenser into the room. Uprights usually have a fan-cooled coil at the bottom or back. Most chest freezers hide their condenser tubing inside the outer cabinet walls, which is why the sides feel warm. In a Point Loma garage, that metal sits in salty, often damp air. Exposed condenser tubing, fan motors, hinges and cabinet floors corrode, and skin-condenser chest cabinets tend to rust from the bottom up. Once rust reaches in-wall tubing, a leak can follow. Moisture is the second issue. Every time the lid opens on a foggy May or June day, humid air enters and turns to frost. Manual-defrost units build it up on the walls; frost-free uprights melt it off with a heater on a timer. Heat is less of a problem here than inland: the airport station's average high peaks around 77°F in August and September. But the September 2024 regional heat wave set an SDG&E demand record and left about 13,000 customers without power at the peak. That is when a freezer's door discipline counts.

Freezer Faults Common Along the Peninsula

Rust-through and refrigerant leaks

Symptom: The freezer warms slowly over weeks, the compressor never stops, and frost covers only part of the cold wall. Cause: Corrosion at tubing joints or in-wall condenser lines, or tubing punctured by chipping ice with a sharp tool. Fix: We search for the leak. Accessible leaks get a repair, new drier and weighed charge. In-wall leaks on inexpensive chest units usually mean replacement.

Heavy frost and a lid that will not seal

Symptom: Thick frost on the walls, a lid that pops open, and longer run times. Cause: Humid garage air, frequent opening, a torn gasket or broken counterbalance hinges. Fix: Defrost when frost reaches 1/4 to 1/2 inch, replace the gasket or hinges, and level the cabinet.

Clicking with no cooling

Symptom: A click every few minutes, a hum, and a warm cabinet. Cause: A failed start relay or overload, often made worse by long extension cords or shared garage circuits. Sometimes the compressor itself. Fix: Test the relay, overload and compressor windings. Move the freezer to a dedicated grounded outlet.

Frost-free upright warming

Symptom: Frost on the rear panel, fan noise, and water on the floor after thawing. Cause: A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or sensor, defrost control, or a frozen drain. Fix: Manual defrost, test each part, replace the failed one and clear the drain.

Garage Freezer Care Near the Bay

Keep the freezer at 0°F and check it with an appliance thermometer. Clean the condenser and grille every six to twelve months, more often with pets or a dusty garage. Give chest freezers side and rear clearance so the in-wall condenser can shed heat. Wipe the cabinet base and check for rust. In an outage, keep the door shut: a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen.

  • Quarterly: look under a chest freezer for rust and wipe salt film off exposed metal
  • Every 6 months: clean the condenser grille, sooner with pets
  • At 1/4 inch of frost: defrost manual-defrost models
  • Yearly: check the lid or door gasket for gaps

Scheduling a Freezer Visit

Tell us the type (chest, upright or built-in) and where it stands. For garage units, clear a path and space around the freezer so we can reach the back and sides. The model and serial label is usually inside the lid, on the door liner or at the back. Note what the thermometer reads and whether the unit clicks, hums or runs constantly. If food is at risk, move it to another freezer or a cooler before we arrive so we can open the cabinet freely.

Deciding Between Repair and a New Freezer

Start relays, thermostats, defrost parts, fans and gaskets are usually worth repairing. Sealed-system leaks in lower-cost chest freezers, especially inside the walls, often tip the decision toward a new unit. Built-in and column freezers are almost always repaired. Our $99 diagnostic, credited to the repair, tells you which side of that line you are on.
