Service scope

Start with the freezer and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated freezer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

Not cold enough or warming

Share the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began and whether food is softening. A temperature symptom alone does not establish the failed component.

Heavy frost or recurring ice

Photograph safely visible frost and note where it returns. Do not chip ice, use a heat gun or pour hot water into the cabinet.

Door, gasket or closure concern

Describe whether the door closes and stays closed, plus any safely visible gasket, hinge or alignment concern. Do not force or reshape parts with heat.

Water, drain or ice-maker concern

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component.

Noise, fan or repeated cycling

Note when the sound starts and whether the door position changes it. A sound alone does not prove the fan, compressor or another component failed.

Upright, chest, drawer or built-in

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the freezer. Do not pull out built-in equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your freezer type.

Format changes both the likely faults and the site visit—identify yours before scheduling.

Upright

Frost patterns and fan noise localize the concern. Note where frost builds—back panel, door edge or floor.

Chest

Efficient and simple, but compressor and seal work needs clear access—share garage or utility-room placement.

Built-in and column

Panel-ready columns involve cabinetry clearance. Share the full model label and installation details.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving or force-defrosting the freezer.

Food warming or power interrupted?

Keep the door closed as much as practical and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.

USDA food-safety guidance

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note the displayed or measured temperature, when the change began, frost or water location, door behavior, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is upright, chest, drawer or built-in and whether a power interruption, door-left-open event, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or defrost attempt does not prove the freezer or stored food is safe after a fault.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the freezer, removing panels or reaching near wiring or refrigerant lines.

Protect airflow and door closure

Follow the manufacturer documentation for the exact model. Keep vents clear, avoid overloading compartments and do not force a door, gasket or drawer into position.

Use safe frost and food guidance

Do not chip ice or apply external heat. When temperature is uncertain, limit door opening and follow official food-safety guidance for time and temperature.

Our Work

How our freezer service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

A freezer code needs the exact model context.

No general freezer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

For a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. For a separate ice-making appliance, use the ice maker repair parent. Those pages are not duplicate targets for this dedicated-freezer identity.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Clear terms before repair.

Service visit and estimate

The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.

The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.

After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Before requesting service

Helpful freezer-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in University City?

We take requests across University City (ZIP 92122). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset a freezer after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

How should I handle food if the freezer is warming?

Keep the door closed as much as practical and use official time-and-temperature guidance. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe.

Should I chip ice or open sealed-system panels?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant lines or bypass controls. Describe the frost pattern and installation without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

How long will my freezer keep food safe during an outage?

With the door or lid kept shut, a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24, per federal food-safety guidance. Food that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at 40°F or below, can be refrozen.

Can I keep a regular freezer in my garage?

It depends on the model's rated ambient range. Garage-ready freezers are built for wider temperatures; GE lists 0°F to 110°F for its garage-ready line. A standard unit may run nonstop in summer heat. Keep any freezer out of direct sun and away from the water heater.

Why does my freezer click but not run after the power came back?

That usually means the compressor is trying to start and the overload is tripping. A failed start relay is a common and inexpensive cause. Low voltage from a long extension cord or a shared circuit can do it too. Unplug it for a few minutes and try again; if it still clicks, call for service.

What should I do with an old freezer I no longer use?

Don't leave it closed and idle in the garage. An unused chest or upright is an entrapment hazard for children. Remove the lid or door, or have the unit hauled away. If you plan to use it again, leave it unplugged with the lid propped open to prevent mold.

Freezer Repair for University City Homes

When the September 2024 heat wave pushed SDG&E to a record 5,032 MW of demand, about 13,000 customers lost power at the peak. For anyone with a freezer full of food, that is the moment the appliance goes from background to urgent. Freezers also sit in garages, where heat builds on the hottest afternoons, and in rentals that stand empty over the summer. We repair chest, upright and built-in column freezers from GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool to Sub-Zero and Thermador in 92122.

Outages, Warm Garages and Idle Summers

Freezers fail slowly and are noticed late. A chest model has its evaporator tubing inside the cabinet walls and often a skin condenser in the outer shell; an upright usually has a fan, a hidden evaporator and a timed defrost heater. Both depend on dumping heat into the room around them. The single-family streets of South University City, built from 1960 to 1971 as tract ranch homes, are where a second freezer is most likely to live in a garage. A garage runs warmer than the house on hot afternoons, and Santa Ana days, about ten a year, bring hot, dry air. As the room heats, run time rises and capacity falls; a unit not rated for garage use can fall out of spec. Power loss is the other hazard. After an outage, a compressor restarting against a warm cabinet is under heavy load, and a weak start relay often fails right then. Finally, many North UC units empty out after June move-outs. A freezer left running in a vacant unit can fail with nobody around to notice until the smell does.

Freezer Faults in Order of How Often They Show Up

Clicking with no cooling after a restart

Symptom: A click every few minutes, a hum, and a cabinet that stays warm, often right after power returns. Cause: Failed start relay or overload, low voltage from a shared garage circuit or extension cord, or less often the compressor itself. Fix: Test relay, overload and windings; move the freezer to a dedicated grounded outlet. Compressor replacement is sealed-system work.

Hot sides and nonstop running

Symptom: Cabinet sides warm to the touch, compressor never shuts off, food soft on top. Cause: Dusty or lint-covered condenser, blocked clearance around a skin-condenser chest, or garage heat beyond the unit's rating. Fix: Clean the coil and fan, restore side and rear clearance, and check the condenser fan motor.

Frost wall in a frost-free upright

Symptom: Frost on the rear panel, a ticking fan, and a slow thaw that leaves water on the floor. Cause: Open defrost heater, failed defrost thermostat or sensor, bad timer or board, or an iced drain. Fix: Defrost manually, test each part, replace the failed one and clear the drain.

Lid or door not sealing

Symptom: Heavy frost along one edge, a chest lid that won't stay up, longer run times. Cause: Worn gasket, broken counterbalance hinge springs, or a cabinet sitting out of level on a sloped garage floor. Fix: Replace the gasket or counterbalance hinges and shim the cabinet level so the lid or door closes evenly.

Keeping a Garage or Spare Freezer Honest

Hold the freezer at 0°F and keep an appliance thermometer inside so you are not guessing. On manual-defrost models, GE advises defrosting when frost reaches a quarter to half an inch. Keep the condenser clean, especially in a garage with dust, pets or a dryer nearby. If you leave for the summer, either use a remote temperature alarm or empty, unplug and prop the lid open to prevent mold. Never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver. Keep a few frozen water jugs inside; a full freezer holds cold longer when power drops.

  • Thermometer check: weekly, target 0°F
  • Manual defrost: at 1/4 to 1/2 inch of frost
  • Condenser and grille: clean every 6 months in a dusty garage or pet home
  • Gasket seal: inspect once a year, and after any move

Freezer Service Calls: What to Expect

Tell us whether the freezer is chest, upright or built-in and where it sits. For a garage unit, clear a path and make sure the outlet it uses is accessible, since we will check voltage there. Move food into coolers if you can so the cabinet can be opened freely. Have the model and serial number, often on a label inside the lid or on the back, and let us know if the problem began after an outage. If the freezer is in a shared garage, tell us how to get in.

Is the Freezer Worth Saving?

Relay, thermostat, defrost and fan repairs are usually worth doing. Sealed-system leaks inside the walls of an inexpensive chest freezer often are not, because the tubing is foamed into the cabinet. Built-in and column freezers are nearly always repaired. The $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, tells you which case you are in before you spend more. If we find a leak you cannot justify fixing, we say so plainly.
