GE dishwashers
GE dishwashers are among the few mainstream machines whose codes are fully published by the manufacturer: the classic C1-C8 drain-and-fill set on older controls, and the modern vocabulary - H2O, FTD, LEAK DETECTED, PF - on current GDT and GDF machines. Every code below comes straight from GE's own support pages.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
Top-control built-ins - GDT550 through GDT670, plastic and stainless tubs.
Front-control siblings sharing the same hydraulics and codes.
Dry Boost, bottle jets and third racks ride on the same platform.
The C-code GSD generation - still washing dishes across San Diego after decades.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
The FTD path: hose, air gap, disposer knockout, then the pump - in GE's own order.
Rinse aid and Dry Boost settings first, heater circuit second.
Spray arms, filter and water temperature - C6's lesson applies to every generation.
Door latch and interlock - the most common no-start on GDT/GDF.
San Diego hard water versus detergent and rinse-aid dosing.
Heater and wiring isolation - taken seriously, found methodically.
Series and model numbers
The generation decides the vocabulary: C-codes on the GSD era, plain-language codes on GDT/GDF - and GE documents both, which makes diagnosis a confirmation exercise.
Model label
The rating plate is on the left side of the tub or door jamb - open the door and check the tub wall's front edge. Photograph the full model and serial. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
GE diagnostics
Every code above is published on GE Appliances' official support pages, including the full C1-C8 legacy table and the modern H2O/FTD/LEAK vocabulary - a level of documentation few brands match, and the reason nothing here needed a third-party guess.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for GE dishwashers. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: fill, wash, drain, drying, controls, leaks, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway homes are big and full. The average household holds 2.9 people, and close to four in ten homes have four bedrooms. In a house like that, a GE dishwasher may run once a day and sometimes twice. Every extra cycle puts more food waste through the filter, more hours on the drain pump and more openings on the door latch. The water is very hard as well. Most GE calls we get here are wear and debris problems that build slowly, then show up as a code.
About three-quarters of Poway homes are detached single-family houses, and roughly 39 percent have four bedrooms, with another nine percent at five or more. Households average 2.9 people. That adds up to heavy dishwasher use: school lunch containers, weekend cooking, gatherings in the backyard. A GE filter that would last weeks in a two-person condo can clog in days here, and a clogged filter is the most common reason for GE drain codes. Poway's water speeds wear too. The city treats mostly imported water at its Berglund plant, and the 2024 report put the distribution average at 236 mg/L, about 13.8 grains per gallon. The city's own FAQ notes that calcium leaves white spots on dishes. Scale forms faster at wash temperature, so it coats the heater and narrows spray-arm holes. Much of the housing dates from 1970 to 1999, which means many kitchens have been remodeled once and some plumbing under the sink is original. An old angle valve or a brittle drain hose can fail right when the dishwasher is working hardest.
Symptom: Standing water after the cycle, slow drain, C1 or C2 on the display. Cause: A packed filter and sump, seeds or glass in the drain pump, or a hose kinked when the cabinet is stuffed with supplies. Fix: Clean the filter and sump, clear the pump inlet, straighten the hose. A drain pump that tests weak gets replaced.
Symptom: Door won't stay shut, cycle won't start, or the door drops open hard. Cause: Thousands of openings wear the latch switch and stretch door springs or cables. Fix: Replace the latch assembly and hinge springs or cables together so the door balances again.
Symptom: Upper rack drags or falls off the track; spotty cleaning up top. Cause: Daily heavy loads crack rollers; scale and debris block the upper spray arm. Fix: Replace rollers and track stops, descale and clear the spray arms, and check the arm's hub for cracks.
Symptom: A C4 code, sometimes after an outage mid-cycle. Cause: The machine filled twice; a stuck float switch or a clogged sump can cause it. Fix: Free and test the float, clean the sump, and replace the float switch if it does not move freely.
The filter is the part that decides how long a busy GE lasts. Twist it out and rinse it more often than a small household would. Teach everyone to scrape plates into the trash, not the dishwasher. Keep rinse aid full for Poway's hard water. Once a quarter, pull the lower spray arm and poke out the holes. If you are away for a week or more, run a short cycle on return so the pump seals are wet again.
Many Poway homes have long driveways, and some are on horse properties or rural roads, so tell us where to park and whether there is a gate or animals loose on the grounds. Clear the sink cabinet and the floor in front of the dishwasher. Have the model and serial number from the edge of the tub, the code or symptom, and when it started. A short video of the noise or the leak helps us bring the right parts.
Heavy use wears parts, but most of them are affordable: latches, rack rollers, drain pumps and inlet valves. Those repairs make sense on almost any GE. If a basic model is eight years or older and needs both a control board and a pump, replacement may be the better spend. We lay out both options after the $99 diagnostic, which counts toward the repair.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
GE's official low-water code. Check the supply and inlet hose per the official list; if it persists, the valve and water sensing are tested on-site.
Failure to drain - GE's official code. Hose, air gap and disposer knockout are checked first, then the drain pump directly.
On Floor Protect models that is leak protection - GE cancels the cycle. The leak is found and fixed before anything is cleared.
On the left side of the tub or door jamb - open the door and photograph the plate.
Yes - GE still documents their C1-C8 codes, parts remain available, and the platform is famously repairable.
In a busy Poway household running a load a day, every one to two weeks is a good habit. Smaller households can go about a month. A clogged filter is the most common reason for slow draining and C1 or C2 codes, so this five-minute job prevents a lot of service calls.
Usually the latch has worn out or a door spring or cable has stretched. High-use dishwashers see thousands of openings, and these parts wear. Replacing the latch and balancing the door springs is a routine repair. If the door drops hard when opened, have it checked before a hinge breaks.
Yes, over time. The City of Poway's 2024 report averaged 236 mg/L, about 13.8 grains per gallon, which is very hard. Calcium builds on the heater and blocks spray holes. Rinse aid and descaling every few months slow it down. A whole-house softener also helps if you have one.
C4 means the dishwasher filled twice, which can happen after a power failure. It can also mean the float switch is stuck or the sump is clogged. Check that the float in the tub moves up and down freely. If the code returns, we test the float switch and clean the sump.
