The complaint
The refrigerator wasn't cooling the way it should.
What we found
We checked both the freezer and the refrigerator. Behind the freezer's back panel, the evaporator coil was completely encased in frost. Frost buildup like this means the defrost system isn't working: the coil can't melt its frost, airflow gets blocked, and cooling drops, especially in the refrigerator section. The cause was a failed defrost heating element.

Coast, Valley and Water: County-Wide Conditions

Inland garages and pet hair make both more likely. Fix: We test the fan and relay, clean the condenser and confirm the compressor cycles normally.
CI: check icemaker
Symptom: Ice production slows or stops; sometimes an icicle forms at the fill tube. Cause: GE flags icemaker operation problems with CI. A scaled or slow-closing valve, low water pressure or a freezer that doesn't reach about 16 degrees are the main causes. Fix: We thaw the fill tube, test valve and pressure, check freezer temperature and replace the valve or ice maker.
PF, DE, tC and tF: status messages
Symptom: Codes appear after an outage or after buttons were pressed, and the refrigerator may not cool. Cause: PF means power was interrupted. DE is demo mode, with cooling off. tC and tF show TurboCool or TurboFreeze is active, which is normal. Fix: For DE, GE advises unplugging for a minute or two. If cooling doesn't return after PF, we test the relay and control.
A Maintenance Plan That Works in Every Zone
The basics are the same across the county; only the frequency changes. GE recommends replacing the water filter at least every six months, and higher-hardness areas benefit from staying on that schedule. Vacuum the rear-bottom condenser every six to twelve months, more often inland or with pets. Keep the freezer about three-quarters full so ice making works well. In vacant homes and between tenants, turn off the ice maker and water supply to prevent valve leaks.
