GE ranges
The GE JB electric and JGB gas ranges are the machines American kitchens default to - and their control dialect is mature: F0/F7 stuck keys, F2 over-temperature, F3/F4 sensor faults, F9/FC door lock. A code this well established is a gift: it names the circuit before the back panel comes off.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
JB645 through JB735 and up - radiant smoothtops with coded oven controls.
JGB635-JGB735 families - sealed burners over a hot-surface-igniter oven.
Front-control slide-ins - JS760, JGS760 - for the built-in look.
The enormous older park still cooking across San Diego - same dialect.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Igniter amperage on gas, element and relay on electric - the halves fail separately.
Thermal cutoffs and the door lock - the predictable aftermath.
Infinite switch welded closed - a safety call, scheduled fast.
The hot-surface igniter weakens with age - tested by amperage, not glow.
Sensor drift versus element health - decided by measurement.
Moisture and cap seating - a dried base usually ends it.
Series and model numbers
JB or JGB decides electric versus gas; the code dialect stays constant - and the model plate plus the F-code names the failed circuit across generations.
Model label
The rating plate is behind the storage-drawer opening or on the oven frame behind the door - pull the drawer or open the door and check the frame edge. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
GE diagnostics
The F-code core is confirmed across GE service literature and multiple independent technical sources, stable across decades of GE ranges. Control generations add codes beyond this core - those are read against model-specific service data on-site, not from an internet mega-list.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for GE ranges. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition, flame quality, temperatures, elements, controls, door fit, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway is a city of big houses. About 39 percent of homes have four bedrooms and another 9 percent have five or more, and households average 2.9 people. Those kitchens cook in volume: weekday dinners for a full table, weekend meals for visiting family, and long holiday roasts. A GE freestanding range, gas JGB or electric JB, handles that well until one heating part gives out, usually at the worst moment. On a range worked this hard, the oven's heating parts usually wear out before anything on the cooktop.
Roughly 69 percent of Poway homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and about three quarters are owner-occupied. Owners tend to stay, so a range can serve one family for many years. Long bakes and roasts are what wear a range oven. On gas GE models, the glow-bar igniter must pull enough current every time the burner cycles to open the safety valve; after thousands of cycles, it weakens and preheat stretches out. On electric models, the bake element expands and contracts with each cycle until the sheath cracks. The inland climate adds heat to the kitchen. Poway's August highs average about 84 degrees, and the hot season runs from roughly July into late September. A kitchen that is already warm makes the control board and its relays run hotter during a four-hour roast. Then there is the dust. Santa Ana winds blow from September through April, and major portions of Poway were evacuated during both the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire. Fine ash and trail dust settle in gas burner ports and on spark electrodes, so a cooktop that sat through a windy week may light unevenly. Equestrian properties add barn grit to the mix.
Symptom: The oven starts fine, then struggles to hold temperature; food takes far longer than the recipe says. Cause: A tired igniter opens the gas valve slowly or not at all on some cycles, so the burner misses its turn. It is a routine wear item on gas ranges. Fix: We measure igniter current draw against spec, replace a weak igniter and watch several full burner cycles.
Symptom: A bright flash or pop, then no bottom heat. The element may show a split or bubble. Cause: The element sheath fails after years of heat cycles. Spills that pool on the element speed it along. Fix: We replace the element, check its terminals and wiring for burn marks and confirm the control relay is switching correctly.
Symptom: The oven stops working, beeps, or refuses to start, with one of these codes showing. Cause: GE lists these codes as the electronic control needing replacement. Heat and age take a toll on the board's relays and solder joints. Fix: We try GE's breaker reset, rule out wiring and sensors, and replace the control if the code persists.
Symptom: A cooktop burner lights on one side only, pops, or needs several clicks to catch. Cause: Ash and dust clog ports and coat the electrode. A cap knocked off-center during cleaning makes it worse. Fix: We clean ports and the electrode, reseat the cap and replace a cracked electrode if needed.
Test the oven a week before a big meal, not the morning of. Run a bake at 350 and check with an oven thermometer. On gas models, a long wait for ignition is an early warning. After a Santa Ana event or smoke day, wipe the cooktop and lift burner caps before using them. Pet hair and barn dust collect under the range too, so vacuum there when you can. If you smell gas, leave and call SDG&E from outside.
Some Poway properties have long driveways, gates or animals on the property. Tell us about gate codes, dogs or horses near the entry, and the best place to park. Let us know if the range is gas or electric and give us the model and serial from the tag behind the storage drawer or on the oven frame. A photo of any code and a short note on when the problem began, such as mid-roast or after a windy week, helps us bring the right parts.
Igniters, bake elements and burner parts are the cheap end of range repair and make sense on almost any GE range that is otherwise in good shape. A control board costs more but is still usually less than a new range and installation. If an older range needs a board and a cracked cooktop at once, a replacement quote is fair to consider. We share the full repair price after our $99 diagnostic, and that fee is credited toward the work.

Clear preparation makes a service request easier to evaluate.
Yes - same-day windows are offered across San Diego County subject to the day's schedule. Availability is confirmed for the exact address when you book.
We take requests across Poway (ZIP 92064, 92074). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.
Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Over-temperature: the control believes the oven is far beyond setpoint. Cut power and book - the sensor and relay path get tested before the oven runs again.
No - the hot-surface igniter weakens with age and delays the gas valve. It is measured by amperage and replaced; a classic, inexpensive repair.
The oven sensor pair - open (F3) or shorted (F4). One resistance test at the connector splits sensor from wiring from board.
Behind the storage drawer or on the oven frame behind the door.
Often yes - the platform is famously repairable, parts remain available, and the diagnostic dialect is unchanged. The visit quotes honestly against replacement.
Very often, yes. A weak igniter still glows but takes too long to open the valve, so the oven cycles slowly or misses cycles. Watch through the bottom vent: if the igniter glows for a long time before the flame appears, book a test. It is a common, straightforward repair.
Yes. Wipe ash off the cooktop, lift burner caps, and clear ports gently with a pin. Check that electrodes are clean and dry. On electric ranges, wipe the glass or coils before cooking. Don't use water on hot parts or spray cleaner into the controls.
We don't recommend it. Self-clean runs at very high heat and is hard on the door lock and control. If it fails, the oven can stay locked when you need it. Clean by hand before a holiday and save self-clean for a quiet week.
Sometimes briefly. GE suggests turning the breaker off for a minute or two, which can clear a code. If F8 comes back, the electronic control usually needs replacement. We check wiring and sensors first so we don't replace a board that is not the problem.
