Clairemont coverage
Clairemont's mid-century homes often pair original kitchens with newer appliances - installation quirks from decades of remodels are normal, and we work with them daily.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated ice maker repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.
Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.
Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.
Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.
Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.
Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.
Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.
Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.
Safe owner checks
Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.
Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

The mold is not getting a full charge of water. The usual causes are a clogged filter, a partly closed shutoff valve, low house water pressure, or scale on the inlet valve screen. With Clairemont's very hard water and older supply plumbing, we often find more than one. We check pressure at the valve and work back from there.
Usually it just needs cleaning. Clear-ice machines reject minerals as they freeze, but scale still builds on the freezing plate and water system, and cloudy cubes are the typical early sign. Run the maker's cleaning cycle with its approved cleaner. If output stays low afterward, the condenser, drain cap or water pressure is next on the list.
A good refrigerator filter changed on time protects the valve and improves taste. Whole-house treatment reduces scale throughout the home, including dishwashers and washers. Clear-ice machines can benefit from water treatment, but they still need scheduled cleaning. Follow each manufacturer's guidance on softened or reverse-osmosis water and the pressure it needs.
Turn off the water supply to the machine and unplug it if you can do so safely. Leaks under undercounter units usually come from a blocked drain, a failing drain pump, or slime in the drain line. We clear or replace the drain components and check the bin and water pan for overflow.
Local notes · Clairemont
An ice maker is really a small water-treatment problem attached to a freezer. It needs steady pressure to fill, clean water to freeze, and a drain that works. In Clairemont, the City of San Diego's water is very hard, and the supply plumbing in many 1950s and 1960s homes has had decades to collect sediment. Both show up first at the ice maker. We repair in-door and freezer ice makers plus standalone clear-ice and nugget machines from makers like KitchenAid, GE, Samsung and U-Line.
The City of San Diego's 2025 water quality report lists average hardness at its three treatment plants between 237 and 243 mg/L, about 13.8 to 14.2 grains per gallon. The report does not say which plant serves which street, but every figure is well past the USGS 'very hard' line of 180 mg/L. In a refrigerator ice maker, that mineral first lands on the fine mesh screen at the inlet valve. As the screen closes up, each fill delivers less water and the cubes come out small or hollow. Low pressure causes the same symptom, and aging supply valves and pipes in original Clairemont homes can make pressure weak or uneven. Whirlpool's guidance calls for 30 to 120 psi, ideally 40 to 80. A slow trickle can also freeze in the fill tube and stop production entirely. Standalone clear-ice machines work differently: they circulate water over a chilled plate so minerals are rejected, then flush the mineral-laden water down the drain each cycle. That keeps cubes clear, but the plate and pump still scale, so machines on City water need cleaning at the short end of the maker's interval.
Symptom: Crescents come out thin, the bin fills slowly, and the dispenser sputters. Cause: A scaled inlet-valve screen, an overdue filter, a partly closed shutoff or saddle valve, or low pressure from aging supply plumbing. Fix: We measure pressure, replace the filter, open or replace the shutoff, and install a new inlet valve if the screen is crusted.
Symptom: The freezer is cold but the ice maker makes nothing. Cause: A valve that drips between fills, or a low-pressure trickle that freezes before it reaches the mold. Fix: Thaw and clear the tube, then replace the dripping valve so it does not refreeze.
Symptom: Output drops, cubes look white, or the 'clean' light is on. Cause: Mineral scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dirty condenser, or a loose drain cap letting the water pan empty. Fix: A full cleaning cycle with the maker's nickel-safe cleaner, condenser cleaning, and a check of the drain cap and pressure.
Symptom: Water on the floor or an overflowing bin under the counter. Cause: Slime in the drain line, a sticking check valve, or a failed pump on units that cannot gravity-drain. Fix: Clear the drain and air gap, clean the pump, or replace it.
KitchenAid and affresh put the typical clear-ice machine cleaning interval around nine months, or whenever the indicator lights or output drops. On water this hard, plan on the early end. Use only the cleaner your maker approves; the wrong chemical can damage nickel-plated evaporators, and U-Line says to discard the first harvest after cleaning. For fridge ice makers, the filter is the cheapest protection the valve has.
Tell us which kind you have: an ice maker in the freezer, one in the fresh-food door, or a separate undercounter machine. Find the model and serial number, and locate the water shutoff, which in older Clairemont kitchens may be under the sink rather than behind the fridge. Empty the ice bin and leave the freezer running so we can watch a fill. For undercounter machines, clear the cabinet under the sink so we can reach the drain or pump. A photo of the cubes you are getting helps us diagnose before we arrive.
In-fridge ice maker modules are usually a low-cost swap, and the valve, filter and fill tube are cheaper still. Standalone clear-ice machines cost more to replace and are generally worth repairing, including cutter-grid and pump failures. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older standalone unit. The $99 diagnostic covers testing the valve, pressure and harvest cycle, and it is credited toward the repair.
