Del Mar coverage

Ice Maker service across Del Mar.

Del Mar's bluff-top homes and village cottages sit right against the ocean, and their appliances show it - marine air on exposed metal, humidity on door seals, and premium built-ins that deserve service in place.

Coastal air is a real factor here: salt and humidity accelerate corrosion on hinges, panels and condenser components, and stretch drying times. Our technicians factor the marine environment into every diagnosis.

Service scope

Start with the ice maker and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

No ice or an empty bin

Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.

Small, hollow or irregular cubes

Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.

Slow or reduced production

Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.

Leak, overflow or ice buildup

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.

Noise, repeated cycling or shutdown

Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.

Built-in, undercounter or standalone

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your ice maker type.

Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.

In-refrigerator

Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.

Built-in and undercounter

Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.

Clear-ice machines

Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.

San Diego hard water and ice quality.

Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving the appliance or disconnecting lines.

Water reaching a cord, outlet or electrical area?

Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.

CDC electrical safety

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note when production changed, the ice size or shape, water or ice location, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is built-in, undercounter, standalone, clear-ice or nugget style, and whether a power interruption, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, disconnect water or drain lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or cleaning cycle does not prove the cause has been corrected.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.

Keep routine care model-safe

Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.

Protect the installation

Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.

Our Work

How our ice maker service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

An ice maker code needs the exact model context.

No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Clear terms before repair.

Service visit and estimate

The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.

The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.

After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Before requesting service

Helpful ice maker-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in Del Mar?

We take requests across Del Mar (ZIP 92014). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset an ice maker after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

What should I note before an ice maker visit?

Record when production changed, the ice shape, any leak location, sounds and the complete display message. Share the model label only if it is safely visible.

Should I chip ice, disconnect a line or open a panel?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant or electrical parts, disconnect water or drain lines or bypass controls. Describe what is safely visible without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Why is my clear ice suddenly cloudy?

Cloudy cubes from a clear-ice machine usually mean the water system is due for cleaning. The plate is designed to reject minerals, but once scale builds up, it stops doing that job well. With Del Mar's very hard water, it happens sooner than the nine-month guideline. A cleaning cycle with an approved cleaner normally restores clear ice.

What water pressure does an ice maker need?

Whirlpool lists 30–120 psi as the working range for refrigerator ice makers, with 40–80 psi as best, and 40–60 psi on reverse-osmosis systems. KitchenAid's 15-inch clear-ice machine uses the same 30–120 psi range and recommends 50 psi. Low pressure produces slow fills and small, hollow cubes.

Can I clean my ice machine with vinegar or a generic descaler?

Stick to the cleaner your manufacturer approves. Many clear-ice machines have nickel-plated evaporators, and the wrong chemical can damage the plating. Products sold for ice machines are labeled nickel-safe for that reason, and U-Line specifically calls for its own cleaner.

My ice machine sat all winter. What should I do before guests arrive?

Ideally it was turned off, drained and dried before you left. If it wasn't, expect stale water and possible slime in the reservoir and drain. Run a full cleaning cycle, discard the first harvest, and check the drain and floor for leaks. Allow time for a full bin before a party.

Del Mar Ice Maker Repair for Very Hard Water

Ice makers turn tap water straight into product, so whatever is dissolved in that water ends up on the parts. Del Mar's 2024 water quality report put hardness at 13.4 grains per gallon on average, enough to scale a clear-ice machine's freezing plate and clog a refrigerator's fill valve screen. Summer adds demand: county fair and racing season bring houseguests and short-term renters who empty the bin faster than it refills. We repair built-in ice makers and undercounter clear-ice machines from brands such as KitchenAid, U-Line, Scotsman and Sub-Zero.

Minerals, Guests and Ice Production

Two kinds of ice makers turn up in Del Mar kitchens and home bars. One lives inside a refrigerator: a fill valve meters water into a mold, a heater or twist tray releases the cubes, and a sensor arm stops production when the bin is full. The other is a standalone clear-ice machine. It recirculates water over a refrigerated plate so minerals are rejected, releases the finished sheet onto a heated cutter grid, and drains the mineral-laden water each cycle. Both meet the same supply. City of Del Mar customers get water treated at San Diego's Miramar plant, and the 2024 report averaged 229 mg/L with a range of 172 to 248. On a clear-ice machine, that load shows up as thin sheets, cloudy cubes and falling output. In a refrigerator unit, scale restricts the valve's inlet screen, so each fill runs short and cubes come out small or hollow. Seasonal patterns stack on top. The San Diego County Fair runs June into July and horse racing follows through summer, so rentals and guest rooms fill. Then an idle machine left holding water between visits grows slime in its reservoir and drain line.

Ice Maker Trouble, Most Common First

Thin sheets or slow output from a clear-ice machine

Symptom: Production falls off, cubes come out thin or partial, and the bin never seems to fill. Cause: Scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dusty condenser, a loose drain cap that lets the water pan empty, a hot room or low water pressure. Fix: We run the cleaning cycle with an approved nickel-safe cleaner, clean the condenser, tighten the drain cap and verify pressure and room temperature.

Small, hollow or missing cubes in a refrigerator

Symptom: Crescents are undersized or absent, and the dispenser is slow. Cause: A clogged filter, a partly closed shutoff, a kinked line, scale on the fill valve's inlet screen or a frozen fill tube. Whirlpool lists 40–80 psi as the best supply range. Fix: We replace the filter, open and check the valve, measure pressure, thaw the fill tube and replace a scaled or dripping inlet valve.

Water on the floor under an undercounter unit

Symptom: A puddle at the toe kick, an overflowing bin, or a no-ice condition because the pan won't refill correctly. Cause: A clogged gravity drain, a stuck pump check valve, slime in the drain line, or a failed drain pump on models without a floor drain below. Fix: We clear the drain and air gap, clean the pump and its check valve, and replace the pump if it no longer moves water.

Sheet sits on the grid without cutting

Symptom: A slab of ice rests on the cutter grid for hours, or never releases from the plate. Cause: An open heater wire or fuse in the cutter grid, a failed hot-gas valve, a bad harvest sensor or a control board fault. Fix: We test grid continuity, the hot-gas valve and the sensors, then replace the grid, valve or board that failed.

Cleaning Intervals for Hard-Water Ice

KitchenAid sets clear-ice machine cleaning at about every nine months or whenever the cleaning light comes on. With Del Mar water, plan on the short end, and clean the condenser the same day. Use only a cleaner the maker approves; nickel-plated evaporators can be damaged by the wrong chemical, which is why ice-machine cleaners are labeled nickel-safe. U-Line tells owners to use its own cleaner and discard the first harvest afterward. Refrigerator ice makers ask for less: a fresh water filter about twice a year and a quick check of supply pressure if cubes shrink.

  • Clean a clear-ice machine every 6–9 months, sooner if cubes turn cloudy.
  • Brush the front condenser grille at the same time; pet hair and lint slow production.
  • Replace the refrigerator water filter twice a year.
  • Before leaving for more than a couple of weeks, close the water valve, then drain and dry the machine.
  • Discard the first batch of ice after any cleaning or restart.

Preparing for an Ice Machine Service Call

Undercounter ice machines are built into cabinetry, so we may need to slide the unit out. Please clear the counter above and tell us whether it drains by gravity or through a pump. Have the model and serial number ready; the label is usually behind the door or on the kickplate. A photo of the ice, any indicator light, and the location of the water shutoff all speed things up. For a refrigerator ice maker, note when the filter was last changed. If rental guests are staying in the home, let them know we're coming.

Fix the Ice Maker or Start Over?

An in-fridge ice maker module is usually an inexpensive swap, so replacing the whole refrigerator rarely enters the conversation. Standalone clear-ice machines are generally worth repairing too, since pumps, grids and valves are serviceable. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older unit, where a new machine often makes more sense. Our $99 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and we lay out the options before any work.
