Service scope

Start with the ice maker and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

No ice or an empty bin

Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.

Small, hollow or irregular cubes

Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.

Slow or reduced production

Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.

Leak, overflow or ice buildup

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.

Noise, repeated cycling or shutdown

Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.

Built-in, undercounter or standalone

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your ice maker type.

Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.

In-refrigerator

Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.

Built-in and undercounter

Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.

Clear-ice machines

Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.

San Diego hard water and ice quality.

Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving the appliance or disconnecting lines.

Water reaching a cord, outlet or electrical area?

Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.

CDC electrical safety

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note when production changed, the ice size or shape, water or ice location, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is built-in, undercounter, standalone, clear-ice or nugget style, and whether a power interruption, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, disconnect water or drain lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or cleaning cycle does not prove the cause has been corrected.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.

Keep routine care model-safe

Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.

Protect the installation

Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.

Our Work

How our ice maker service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

An ice maker code needs the exact model context.

No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Clear terms before repair.

Service visit and estimate

The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.

The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.

After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Before requesting service

Helpful ice maker-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in Hillcrest & Mission Hills?

We take requests across Hillcrest & Mission Hills (ZIP 92103). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset an ice maker after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

What should I note before an ice maker visit?

Record when production changed, the ice shape, any leak location, sounds and the complete display message. Share the model label only if it is safely visible.

Should I chip ice, disconnect a line or open a panel?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant or electrical parts, disconnect water or drain lines or bypass controls. Describe what is safely visible without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Why is my clear-ice machine making cloudy cubes?

Cloudy ice usually means high mineral content in the water system or a machine overdue for cleaning. Run the manufacturer's cleaning cycle with the approved cleaner and discard the first batch afterward. If cubes stay cloudy, scale may be heavy enough that the plate or water system needs hands-on cleaning or parts.

What water pressure does a refrigerator ice maker need?

Whirlpool lists a supply range of 30 to 120 psi, with 40 to 80 psi working best, and 40 to 60 psi on reverse-osmosis systems. Below that, fills are slow and cubes come out small or hollow. We can measure pressure at the valve during a visit.

Can I run my ice maker from a reverse-osmosis system?

Yes, and it removes much of the mineral load. The catch is pressure: an RO storage tank that runs low between refills may feed the valve too weakly, giving small cubes. Keep the system maintained and make sure it can deliver enough pressure at the refrigerator connection.

Why does my undercounter ice machine leak onto the floor?

Most leaks come from the drain side: a clogged gravity line, slime buildup, a stuck check valve or a failed drain pump. A loose drain cap inside the machine can also empty the water pan, which causes thin ice rather than a puddle. We check the whole drain path, not just the pump.

Ice Maker Repair for Hillcrest Kitchens and Home Bars

Ice is frozen tap water, and Hillcrest's tap water carries a heavy load of calcium. In a refrigerator ice maker those minerals collect at the fill valve screen and in the water filter. In an undercounter clear-ice machine they coat the chilled plate the machine depends on to leave minerals behind. Either way the result is small cubes, cloudy ice or no ice at all. We service both types across Hillcrest, Mission Hills and University Heights, on brands from Whirlpool and GE to KitchenAid, U-Line and Sub-Zero.

Where 14-Grain Water Ends Up Inside an Ice Maker

The City of San Diego's 2025 drinking water report lists its three treatment plants at 237, 242 and 243 mg/L of hardness, all well past the USGS very-hard line of 180. For ice makers, the path that water takes matters more than the exact number. A refrigerator ice maker opens a solenoid valve for a few seconds to fill its mold. A fine screen at the valve inlet catches grit and scale, and as it narrows the fill gets shorter and cubes come out hollow or undersized. The water filter traps some of the load and clogs sooner in hard water, cutting flow further. A clear-ice machine works differently. It pumps water across a refrigerated plate so pure water freezes first while minerals stay in the circulating water, which drains away each cycle. That keeps cubes clear, but scale still builds on the plate and in the pump and tubing. As it thickens, sheets freeze slowly and thin, output falls and the ice turns cloudy. Compact Uptown kitchens add one more factor: undercounter machines breathe through a front grille at floor level, right where pet hair and dust collect.

Ice Problems We Trace Back to the Source

Small, hollow or missing cubes

Symptom: Crescents come out undersized or not at all, and the dispenser runs slowly. Cause: An overdue filter, a partly closed saddle or shutoff valve, a kinked line, scale on the fill valve screen, or a depleted reverse-osmosis tank. Fix: We check pressure at the valve, replace the filter or inlet valve, and correct the supply line so the mold fills fully.

Freezer cold, no ice

Symptom: The ice maker sits idle or the chute is jammed with fused cubes. Cause: A fill tube frozen solid by a dripping valve or a low-pressure trickle, or ice clumped in the auger after a partial thaw. Fix: We thaw and clear the tube and bin, replace a leaking valve, and check the door seal on in-door ice compartments.

Clear-ice machine output dropping

Symptom: Thin or partial sheets, low bin level, cloudy cubes. Cause: Mineral scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dusty condenser behind the front grille, a loose drain cap, or low water pressure. Fix: We run a full cleaning with a cleaner approved for the machine, clean the condenser, tighten the drain cap and verify supply pressure.

Water on the floor near an undercounter unit

Symptom: Puddles, an overflowing bin, or no ice because the water pan won't refill correctly. Cause: A clogged gravity drain, slime in the drain line, a stuck pump check valve or a failed drain pump. Fix: We clear the drain and air gap, clean or replace the pump and confirm the line runs downhill.

Cleaning Intervals for Hard-Water Ice

KitchenAid clear-ice machines call for a cleaning cycle when the indicator lights, roughly every nine months, or whenever output drops, using a nickel-safe cleaner approved for the unit. U-Line specifies its own cleaner and says to throw out the first harvest after cleaning. With water this hard, plan on the short end of every interval and clean the condenser at the same visit. For a refrigerator ice maker, change the filter about every six months, and sooner if the dispenser slows down.

  • Every 6 months, or sooner when flow slows: replace the refrigerator water filter
  • About every 6-9 months: clean a clear-ice machine with its approved cleaner
  • Quarterly with pets: brush lint off the front grille of an undercounter unit
  • Before a long trip: turn off the ice maker and shut its water valve; clean before restarting

Getting Ready for an Ice Maker Appointment

Empty the bin before we arrive so we can see the mold or freezing plate. For undercounter machines, the drain matters most: tell us whether it drains by gravity or through a pump, and where the line ends. Find the water shutoff for the refrigerator or ice machine, usually under the sink or behind the unit. In condo buildings with restricted entry, set up access and a parking spot in advance. Model and serial labels sit on an inside wall of the fridge compartment or behind the ice machine's kick plate.

Is Your Ice Maker Worth Repairing?

In-fridge ice maker modules are usually a modest, quick swap. Standalone clear-ice machines are typically worth repairing, from pumps and cutter grids to sensors, unless an older unit has a sealed-system failure. Scale damage comes back, though, because the water hasn't changed, so pair any repair with a cleaning routine or water treatment. The $99 diagnostic is credited when you approve the work.
