Kearny Mesa & Serra Mesa coverage
Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa family homes run practical, hard-working appliance sets - proven platforms, fast parts, straightforward repairs.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.
Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.
Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.
Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.
Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.
Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.
Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.
Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.
Safe owner checks
Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.
Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

Cloudy cubes from a clear-ice unit usually mean mineral buildup and a water system due for cleaning. Hard water also shortens the time between cleanings. Run the cleaning cycle with an approved cleaner; if the ice stays cloudy, the pump or water distribution may need service.
It reduces scale on valves and freezing plates. Some owners use a filter or softener on the ice maker line. Follow the manufacturer's guidance, since some machines specify water conditions and reverse-osmosis setups change the supply pressure the valve sees.
Partial thawing can melt cubes together and jam the auger or ejector, or freeze water in the fill tube. Empty the bin, check the fill tube for ice, and give it a day. If it still does not produce, the valve or module needs testing.
No. Clear-ice machines drain each cycle, so a clogged gravity drain, a failed drain pump or slime in the line can spill water. Check that the drain cap is tight and the drain line is not kinked, then call if water keeps appearing.
Local notes · Kearny Mesa
An ice maker is a water appliance first and a cold appliance second. Every cycle it opens a valve, fills a mold or a water pan, freezes, harvests and starts again. That puts it in direct contact with whatever comes out of the tap. On Kearny Mesa that is City of San Diego water rated very hard, around 14 grains per gallon. Minerals end up on valve screens, fill tubes and freezing plates. We repair in-fridge ice makers and standalone undercounter machines in brands like KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung and U-Line.
The City's 2025 water quality report lists average hardness of 237 mg/L at the Alvarado plant, 242 mg/L at Miramar and 243 mg/L at Otay, roughly 13.8 to 14.2 grains per gallon. The report does not say which plant serves which neighborhood, so we treat the whole mesa as very hard; anything above 180 mg/L earns that label from the USGS. For an in-fridge ice maker, the weak point is the inlet valve screen. Scale narrows it, fill volume drops, and cubes come out small or hollow. A slow trickle can also freeze inside the fill tube and stop production. Undercounter clear-ice machines work differently. They pump water across a chilled plate so pure water freezes and the minerals are rinsed to drain. With water this hard, that rinse carries a heavy load, and scale builds on the plate and in the water circuit, giving thin sheets and cloudy cubes. Heat matters too: one popular 15-inch clear-ice model loses output when the room tops 90 F, which happens in mesa garages and bars on hot September days.
Symptom: Crescents shrink, some are hollow, and the dispenser pours slowly. Cause: Mineral buildup on the valve's inlet screen, an overdue water filter, a partly closed shutoff, or supply pressure below the 30 to 120 psi range many refrigerators need. Fix: Replace the filter, confirm pressure and open the valve fully, then replace the inlet valve if its screen is scaled.
Symptom: Freezer is cold but the bin stays empty, or the dispenser grinds on clumped ice. Cause: A dripping valve or low-pressure trickle freezes in the tube; partial thaws after outages fuse cubes into a block. Fix: Thaw and clear the tube and chute, replace a leaking valve, and break up or empty the bin.
Symptom: Output drops, sheets come out partial, cubes look white. Cause: Scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dirty front-breathing condenser, a loose drain cap or a hot room. Fix: Run the cleaning cycle with a nickel-safe cleaner approved for the machine, clean the condenser, tighten the drain cap and check room temperature.
Symptom: Water on the floor, an overflowing bin, or an ice sheet that sits on the grid uncut. Cause: Clogged pump check valve or slime in the drain line; an open cutter-grid heater wire, hot-gas valve or harvest sensor. Fix: Clear or replace the pump, then test grid continuity, valve and sensors and replace the failed part.
Clear-ice makers typically call for cleaning when the indicator lights, about every nine months, or when output drops. With City water near 14 gpg, plan on the short end of that range and clean the condenser the same day. Discard the first batch after any cleaning. For refrigerator ice makers, the filter does most of the protecting, so change it on time.
Tell us whether the ice comes from a refrigerator or a standalone undercounter unit, and give us the model and serial from the label; on undercounter machines it is usually behind the kickplate or inside the door. Locate the water shutoff before we arrive. For newer apartments along Convoy Street or Aero Drive, share parking and access details so we can bring tools up in one trip. Photos of the cubes, any error light and the drain connection help us pick parts before the visit.
In a refrigerator, the ice maker module itself is usually a low-cost swap, and an inlet valve is not much more. Standalone clear-ice machines are typically worth repairing, from drain pumps to cutter grids and sensors. The exception is a sealed-system failure on an older unit. Our $99 diagnostic is credited toward whichever repair you choose.
