Mission Valley coverage
Mission Valley is condo and apartment country - stacked laundry, compact kitchens, HOA rules and garage access codes are part of nearly every visit.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated ice maker repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.
Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.
Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.
Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.
Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.
Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.
Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.
Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.
Safe owner checks
Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.
Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.
Review current pricing information90-day labor warranty.
1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

Cloudy cubes usually mean the water system is due for cleaning. The machine is designed to reject minerals, but on very hard water those minerals build up on the freezing plate and in the reservoir until they start showing in the ice. Run the approved cleaning cycle, then clean the condenser. Water treatment helps if cloudiness returns quickly.
It can reduce scale, but it adds its own risk. Whirlpool recommends 40 to 60 psi when an ice maker runs off reverse osmosis, and a depleted storage tank drops pressure enough to cause small or hollow cubes. If you install RO, have the tank pressure checked and keep an eye on ice size after heavy use.
Usually not. Clumping happens when cubes partly thaw and refreeze, often from a door that does not seal fully, a warm spell with frequent door openings, or infrequent use. Empty the bin, check the door gasket and use ice regularly. If clumping continues, we check the freezer temperature and the defrost system.
We advise against it unless the manufacturer approves. Many clear-ice machines use nickel-plated evaporators, and makers specify nickel-safe cleaners for that reason. U-Line, for example, says to use only its own cleaner and to discard the first batch of ice after cleaning. Check your manual before using any product.
Local notes · Mission Valley
Of every appliance in a Mission Valley kitchen, the ice maker handles the most untreated tap water with the least tolerance for minerals. It freezes water in small volumes through a tiny fill valve, so even a thin mineral layer shows up quickly as small cubes, slow harvests or cloudy ice. We repair ice makers built into refrigerators and standalone undercounter clear-ice and nugget machines, from Whirlpool and KitchenAid to GE, U-Line and Sub-Zero, in condos, apartments and townhomes across the valley.
The City of San Diego's 2025 water quality report lists three treatment plants with average hardness between 237 and 243 mg/L, which works out to about 14 grains per gallon. The report does not say which plant feeds which neighborhood, but every figure sits well above the USGS 'very hard' line of 180 mg/L. The supply is mostly imported Colorado River and State Water Project water. For an ice maker, hardness shows up in two places. In a refrigerator unit, a solenoid valve meters a few ounces into the mold each cycle through a fine inlet screen. Scale narrows that screen and the valve seat, so each fill comes in short and the cubes come out small or hollow. A valve that no longer seats fully drips, and the drip freezes in the fill tube. In an undercounter clear-ice machine, water flows over a chilled plate and the minerals are deliberately rejected into the reservoir and flushed down the drain. With water this hard, that rejected mineral load coats the plate and water system faster, so production slows and cubes cloud. Supply pressure is the third factor; Whirlpool puts the sweet spot for refrigerator ice makers at 40 to 80 psi.
Symptom: Crescents come out undersized, the bin fills slowly, or the dispenser barely delivers. Cause: A clogged filter, scale on the inlet valve screen, a partly closed shutoff, a kinked line, or supply pressure below the 30-120 psi range many makers specify. Fix: We replace the filter, measure pressure, open or replace the shutoff, and replace the inlet valve if the screen or seat is scaled.
Symptom: The freezer is cold but no ice is made, and you may see an icicle at the back of the mold. Cause: A scaled valve that drips between cycles, or a low-pressure trickle that freezes before reaching the mold. Fix: Thaw and clear the tube, replace the dripping valve, and confirm fill volume on the next cycle.
Symptom: Output drops, cubes are thin or partial, and the cleaning light comes on sooner than expected. Cause: Mineral scale on the freezing plate, a dirty front condenser, a loose drain cap, or a room above 90 F. Fix: Run the cleaning cycle with a nickel-safe cleaner, clean the condenser, tighten the drain cap, and check pressure.
Symptom: Water on the floor, an overflowing bin, or no ice because the pan never refills correctly. Cause: Slime or scale in the gravity drain or pump check valve, or a failed pump on units installed below the drain line. Fix: Clear the drain and air gap, clean the pump and check valve, or replace the pump.
KitchenAid calls for cleaning its clear-ice machines when the indicator lights, about every nine months, or when output drops. On 14-grain water, plan on the short end and clean the condenser at the same time. Use only the cleaner the maker approves; nickel-plated evaporators can be damaged by the wrong chemical. For in-fridge units, change the water filter about every six months. If you leave for more than a couple of weeks, shut off the ice maker, close the water valve, and clean before restarting.
Ice makers are plumbed, so we may need to reach the shutoff under the sink or behind the refrigerator and look at the drain for undercounter units. Clear those areas before we arrive. For a building with controlled access, send the gate or call-box details and parking instructions ahead of time. Note the model and serial number and tell us what the ice looks like: small, cloudy, clumped or none. A photo of the cubes helps. If a water softener or reverse-osmosis system feeds the line, mention it.
The ice maker inside a refrigerator is usually a modest-cost module, so when the mold, motor or harvest assembly has failed, replacing the module is normal. Valves, filters and thawed tubes are simple fixes. A standalone clear-ice machine is typically worth repairing, except when an older unit has a sealed-system failure. Our $99 diagnostic comes off the repair bill.
