North Park coverage

Ice Maker service across North Park.

North Park's craftsman bungalows and new mixed-use buildings keep both ends of the appliance spectrum busy - original gas ranges to brand-new compact stacks.

Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.

Service scope

Start with the ice maker and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.

No ice or an empty bin

Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.

Small, hollow or irregular cubes

Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.

Slow or reduced production

Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.

Leak, overflow or ice buildup

Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.

Noise, repeated cycling or shutdown

Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.

Built-in, undercounter or standalone

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.

San Diego installations

Know your ice maker type.

Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.

In-refrigerator

Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.

Built-in and undercounter

Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.

Clear-ice machines

Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.

San Diego hard water and ice quality.

Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening panels, moving the appliance or disconnecting lines.

Water reaching a cord, outlet or electrical area?

Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.

CDC electrical safety

Smoke, sparking, burning odor or exposed wiring?

Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.

USFA fire safety
  • Note when production changed, the ice size or shape, water or ice location, sounds and any complete displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is built-in, undercounter, standalone, clear-ice or nugget style, and whether a power interruption, move, installation change or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring or refrigerant lines, disconnect water or drain lines, enter diagnostic modes, bypass a control, use sharp tools on ice or apply external heat.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide. A reset or cleaning cycle does not prove the cause has been corrected.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.

Keep routine care model-safe

Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.

Protect the installation

Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.

Our Work

How our ice maker service works.

  1. Describe and identify

Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.

  2. Diagnose and review

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.

  3. Approve and complete

Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.

Display messages

An ice maker code needs the exact model context.

No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.

If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.

Visit, pricing and warranty wording

Clear terms before repair.

Service visit and estimate

The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.

The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.

After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.

Before requesting service

Helpful ice maker-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in North Park?

We take requests across North Park (ZIP 92104). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset an ice maker after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

What should I note before an ice maker visit?

Record when production changed, the ice shape, any leak location, sounds and the complete display message. Share the model label only if it is safely visible.

Should I chip ice, disconnect a line or open a panel?

No. Do not use sharp tools or external heat, remove panels, touch refrigerant or electrical parts, disconnect water or drain lines or bypass controls. Describe what is safely visible without moving equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Why is my ice cloudy?

In a clear-ice machine, cloudy cubes usually mean the water system is due for cleaning or the mineral load is high. In a refrigerator, cloudy ice is normal because the water freezes from all sides and traps air and minerals. If a clear-ice machine suddenly produces cloudy ice, run its cleaning cycle.

How often should I clean an undercounter ice machine here?

KitchenAid calls for cleaning when the indicator lights, when output drops, or about every nine months. With City water averaging roughly 14 grains per gallon, expect to hit that point sooner. Use only a cleaner the maker approves, since some plates need a nickel-safe formula.

My refrigerator makes tiny cubes. What is the cause?

Usually too little water per fill. Common culprits are an old filter, a partly closed shutoff, low water pressure or scale on the inlet valve screen. Replace the filter first. If cubes stay small, the valve likely needs service. If the dispenser is also slow, the restriction is upstream of the ice maker.

Does an undercounter ice machine need a floor drain?

It needs a drain path. Models with gravity drains need the drain below the unit; others require a drain pump. A clogged or slimed drain line can stop ice production because the water pan cannot empty and refill correctly. Keep the drain line pitched downhill and have it cleaned when the machine is serviced.

Ice Maker Repair in North Park for In-Fridge and Undercounter Units

Every cube your ice maker produces starts as North Park tap water, and that water carries a heavy mineral load. In a refrigerator ice maker, those minerals collect on the fill valve screen and in the fill tube. In an undercounter clear-ice machine, they build on the freezing plate and cloud the ice. Either way, output drops gradually, so many owners do not notice until the bin is empty. We repair in-fridge ice makers and standalone machines from brands such as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, U-Line and Sub-Zero.

What 14 Grains of Hardness Does Inside an Ice Maker

The City of San Diego's 2025 water quality report lists average hardness from 237 to 243 mg/L across its Alvarado, Miramar and Otay treatment plants, about 14 grains per gallon, which the USGS scale classes as very hard. The report does not say which plant serves 92104, but all three sit in that range. A refrigerator ice maker takes a measured shot of water through a solenoid valve for each harvest. Scale on the valve's inlet screen shortens that shot, and the result is small, hollow crescents or a dispenser that slowly quits. A valve that no longer closes cleanly lets water trickle into the fill tube, where it freezes solid. Undercounter clear-ice machines work differently. They recirculate water over a refrigerated plate so minerals are rejected and drained each cycle, which means the plate and water system take the scale instead of the ice. When cleaning is overdue, sheets come out thin or cloudy. These machines also breathe through a front grille, and pet hair and lint clog that condenser quickly. Compact infill kitchens sometimes tuck a unit near an oven or dishwasher, and KitchenAid notes production drops when the room tops 90 F.

Ice Maker Faults We Diagnose Around 30th and University

Small, hollow or no cubes in a refrigerator

Symptom: Crescents come out undersized, or harvests stop entirely while the freezer stays cold. Cause: A scaled inlet screen, an overdue filter, a partly closed shutoff or saddle valve, a kinked line, or low supply pressure. Whirlpool recommends 40 to 80 psi. Fix: We check pressure, replace the filter, open or replace the shutoff, and replace the inlet valve if the screen or coil is bad.

Frozen fill tube or jammed auger

Symptom: No ice, or the dispenser grinds and delivers nothing. Cause: A dripping valve freezing water in the tube, or cubes clumped together after partial thaws. Fix: We thaw and clear the tube and chute, replace a dripping valve, and check door-in-door seals and heaters on in-door ice makers.

Clear-ice machine making thin or cloudy ice

Symptom: Low output, partial cubes, white or cloudy ice. Cause: Scale on the freezing plate and water system, a dirty front condenser, a loose drain cap or a warm room. Fix: We run the maker's cleaning cycle with an approved nickel-safe cleaner, clean the condenser and verify the drain cap and water pressure.

Water on the floor under an undercounter unit

Symptom: Puddles, an overflowing bin, or a machine that stops making ice because the pan will not refill correctly. Cause: A clogged gravity drain, slime in the drain line, or a failed drain pump or check valve. Fix: We clear the drain and air gap, clean the pump and replace it if it has failed.

An Ice Maker Cleaning Rhythm for Very Hard Water

Published intervals assume average water. With hardness this high, plan on the short end of every range. Discard the first batch after any cleaning or filter change. That applies to both kinds of ice maker. In a refrigerator, the filter is the first line of defense for the inlet valve. In a clear-ice machine, the cleaning cycle strips scale from the freezing plate and water pump before it starts cutting output. Mark the date on the unit or filter when you do either task.

  • Refrigerator ice makers: replace the water filter about every 6 months.
  • Clear-ice machines: run a cleaning cycle when the indicator lights or output drops, and at least every 9 months; sooner here.
  • Vacuum the front grille or condenser at every cleaning, more often with pets.
  • Check that the drain cap on clear-ice machines is tight after cleaning.
  • Before a long trip, shut off the water supply and empty the bin.

Preparing Your Kitchen for an Ice Maker Visit

Empty the ice bin before we arrive so we can see the mold, the fill tube and the auger. For undercounter machines, clear the area in front and, if possible, the cabinet where the drain and water line run. Locate the shutoff valve for the ice maker line. Have the model and serial number, the date of the last filter change or cleaning, and a photo of any warning light. For apartment buildings, mention the floor and elevator access when you book.

Swapping Parts Versus Replacing an Ice Maker

Inside a refrigerator, the ice maker module and fill valve are usually inexpensive, quick replacements. Undercounter clear-ice machines are typically worth repairing, from cutter grids to pumps, unless an older unit has a sealed-system failure. Our $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, sorts out whether the fault is water supply, the module or the machine. Before replacing a refrigerator's ice maker, confirm the water supply and valve are healthy, or the new module will behave the same way.
