University City coverage
University City splits between family homes south of the 52 and the UTC high-rises - condo logistics, compact formats and builder-suite appliances are everyday work here.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated ice maker repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dedicated ice maker request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model, configuration or sealed-system repair.
Note whether the appliance fills, cycles or makes any ice at all. An empty bin alone does not identify the failed component.
Photograph the ice shape and note when it changed. Water supply, temperature, settings and internal components can produce similar symptoms.
Share roughly how much ice is produced over time and whether use patterns, room conditions or settings changed. Do not use a general production-rate claim as a diagnosis.
Note where water or ice appears and when it occurs. Avoid standing water near a cord, outlet or electrical component, and do not disconnect supply or drain lines.
Describe the sound or sequence and when it occurs. A noise alone does not prove a pump, motor, valve or control has failed.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the configuration. Do not pull out installed equipment or touch wiring, refrigerant lines, water lines, drains or mounting connections.
San Diego installations
Format determines parts, water paths and the service conversation—identify yours before the visit.
Built into the fridge or freezer door; the refrigerator model label is the one that identifies parts.
Dedicated units with their own water and drain lines—share how yours drains when scheduling.
Pump-driven models make restaurant-style ice and need periodic descaling, especially on hard water.
Mineral-heavy water scales water lines, valves and molds—cloudy or shrinking cubes often trace to scale. Descaling needs are confirmed at diagnosis before any work is authorized.
Safe owner checks
Do not touch the appliance, cord, outlet or standing water. If power or water can be isolated without approaching the hazard, follow the appliance instructions; otherwise keep away and request qualified help.
Do not reproduce the problem or touch the unit, cord, outlet or standing water. If there is fire, smoke or any doubt, leave the home and call 911.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the ice maker, removing panels or reaching near wiring, refrigerant, water or drain connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for approved cleaning, filter and descaling procedures. Do not use a generic reset or unverified cleaning product as a diagnostic step.
Do not pull out installed equipment, chip ice with sharp tools or touch wiring, refrigerant, water, drain or mounting connections. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work
Share the appliance, installation, model label and observed concern when requesting service.
The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No general ice maker error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models. Existing model-specific URLs are not treated as universal guidance.
If the concern is part of a refrigerator rather than a dedicated ice-making appliance, use the distinct refrigerator repair parent. The two pages are not duplicate targets.
Visit, pricing and warranty wording
The residential service visit / diagnostic fee is $99. It always applies, is non-refundable and is credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. No exceptions.
The commercial service visit / diagnostic fee is $150 and is separate from residential pricing.
After diagnosis, review the proposed scope and estimate before authorizing repair work.
Review current pricing information90-day labor warranty.
1-year parts warranty.
Both terms begin on the date the repair is completed.
An online request starts scheduling; it does not by itself confirm an appointment or a model-specific repair outcome.

Make sure the ice maker switch or arm is on, and the water shutoff is fully open. Dispense a few glasses of water to purge air from the line. Give it 24 hours to cool the mold and start cycling. If there is still no ice, the filter, valve or fill tube likely needs attention.
Cloudy cubes usually mean the water system is due for cleaning or the mineral content is high. In very hard City water that happens sooner. Run the cleaning cycle with the approved nickel-safe cleaner; if the ice stays cloudy, water treatment may help.
Use only the cleaner the manufacturer approves. Many clear-ice machines have nickel-plated evaporators, and the wrong chemical can damage the plating. Products labeled nickel-safe exist for this reason. Check your owner's manual first. Rinse thoroughly afterward and throw out the first batch of ice.
Usually not. Old ice absorbs odors and water in the line goes stale. Empty the bin, replace the filter, discard the first two or three batches, and wipe the bin. If odor returns quickly, the reservoir or line may need sanitizing.
Local notes · University City
Every June, a wave of University City leases turns over. Refrigerators get unplugged or left running in empty apartments, water valves get shut, and the ice maker sits dry for weeks. When the next tenant moves in, it is often the first thing that doesn't work. The fill valve sticks, the tube freezes, or the bin is full of stale, clumped ice. Add City water at roughly 14 grains of hardness and scale builds on every wet part. We fix refrigerator ice makers and undercounter clear-ice machines from Whirlpool, GE and Samsung to KitchenAid and U-Line.
An in-fridge ice maker is a small plumbing system. A solenoid valve at the back of the refrigerator opens for a few seconds, pushes water through a thin fill tube into a mold, and a heater or twist tray releases the cubes into a bin. It depends on steady pressure: Whirlpool asks for 30 to 120 psi at the valve, ideally 40 to 80. In a unit that sat empty over the summer, the valve seat and screen may be crusted with dried minerals, the shutoff under the sink may have been closed or only half opened, and the filter may be months overdue. Low flow freezes in the fill tube and the maker stops. Undercounter clear-ice machines work differently. They recirculate water over a chilled plate, drain the mineral-rich water each cycle, and cut the sheet on a heated grid. City of San Diego water averages 237 to 243 mg/L of hardness in its 2025 report, all three plants in the very hard range, so the plate scales faster, ice turns cloudy and output drops. Water left standing in a reservoir over a vacancy also grows slime.
Symptom: Undersized crescents, a slow bin fill, or nothing at all. Cause: Overdue filter, a partly closed shutoff or saddle valve, a kinked line, or scale on the fill-valve inlet screen. Fix: Replace the filter, open and test the supply, check pressure, and replace the inlet valve if the screen or solenoid has failed.
Symptom: Freezer is cold but the maker is idle, or the dispenser grinds and delivers nothing. Cause: A dripping valve or trickle fill freezing in the tube; ice that half-thawed during a vacancy or outage and fused into a block. Fix: Thaw and clear the tube and chute, empty the bin, and replace a valve that drips.
Symptom: Low output, partial cubes, cleaning light on. Cause: Scale on the freezing plate, a dirty condenser, a loose drain cap, a hot room, or low water pressure. Fix: Run the cleaning cycle with a nickel-safe cleaner the maker approves, clean the condenser, and tighten the drain cap.
Symptom: Puddle, overflowing bin, or a pan that never refills correctly. Cause: A clogged gravity drain or pump check valve, slime in the drain line, a drain run not below the unit, or a failed drain pump. Fix: Clear the drain and air gap, clean the pump, and replace it if it no longer moves water.
For refrigerator ice makers, a fresh filter about every six months does most of the work. For clear-ice machines, KitchenAid calls for a cleaning when the indicator lights, about every nine months, or when output drops; in water this hard, expect the short end. Clean the condenser at the same time. U-Line says to discard the first harvest after cleaning. Before a long absence, turn the maker off, close the water valve, and drain and dry the reservoir.
Tell us whether the ice maker is in the refrigerator or a separate undercounter machine. Find the water shutoff, usually under the sink or behind the fridge, and make sure it can be reached. Tenants in managed buildings should give us the manager's contact if they are approving the work. Have the model and serial number and a photo of any indicator lights. Empty the ice bin before we arrive. If an undercounter unit has a drain pump, tell us where it discharges.
Inside a refrigerator, the ice maker module and fill valve are usually low-cost replacements, and a new module is often simpler than repairing the old one. Standalone clear-ice machines are typically worth repairing, including cutter grids, pumps and boards. A sealed-system failure on an older undercounter unit is where replacement enters the conversation. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
