JennAir Cooktop Repair Throughout San Diego County
JennAir began in Indianapolis in 1947 and built the first self-ventilated downdraft range in 1961. The brand passed to Maytag in 1982 and to Whirlpool in 2006, and dropped the hyphen from Jenn-Air in 2018. That history shows up in the cooktops we open. There are Maytag-era gas tops, radiant glass, current induction, and JED downdraft models that still pull smoke down. Each design fails differently. One Brand, Several Climates: What Changes Across the County
The county covers 4,526 square miles, from more than 70 miles of Pacific coast over the mountains to Anza-Borrego. A cooktop's weak points differ by zone. Along the coast, the May Gray and June Gloom marine layer keeps kitchens damp. Salt in that air corrodes spark electrodes, burner bases and board connectors. JennAir Cooktop Faults by Platform, With Codes and Fixes
Gas platform: continuous clicking or no ignition
Symptom: Igniters spark nonstop, spark with no flame, or make no sound at all. Cause: Per Whirlpool, all burners spark while any knob is at LITE. Wet burners or drafts that trigger re-ignition cause the rest, and no click at all can mean a tripped breaker. Wet or greasy switches, cracked electrodes, poor grounds, clogged ports and failed spark modules are also common. Fix: We dry and reseat the burners, clear the ports with a pin, then replace the switch, electrode or module that tests bad.
Radiant glass: zone dead or runaway heat
Symptom: An element won't heat, or it glows on high regardless of the setting. Cause: An open ribbon element, burnt terminals, a failed infinite switch, or a stuck relay on touch-control models. Fix: Touch-control owners should read the recall question below first. Otherwise we replace the element, switch or control board.
Electric and induction: Lock or Loc on display
Symptom: The pads beep or do nothing, and Lock or Loc shows on the display. Cause: Whirlpool documents this as the control lock being active, not a failure. A keypad or board fault can look the same if the lock won't clear. Fix: Release the lock per the manual. If the pads still don't respond, we test the interface and control board.
JED downdraft: vent stuck or weak
Symptom: The telescoping vent won't rise, or it rises but captures little smoke. Cause: Lift motor or gear wear, a failed limit switch, or a grease-clogged blower. Dust from inland wind events makes the blower problem worse. Fix: We service the lift assembly and clean or replace the blower. We confirm parts availability on older model numbers first.
Care Priorities That Depend on Where You Live
The basics are the same in any kitchen. Whirlpool says to dry burners and caps fully after every cleaning or boil-over. Glass tops need flat, clean cookware and quick cleanup of spills. Beyond that, adjust to your setting. Coastal homes should focus on corrosion. Inland homes should focus on airflow and dust. Every home with gas should have its appliances checked once a year. SDG&E recommends yearly inspections and offers no-cost safety checkups. If a power outage leaves the controls stuck, reset the breaker before calling.

What is the difference between a JED downdraft cooktop and a regular one?
A JED cooktop has a built-in vent that pulls smoke and steam down through a blower and duct instead of up to a hood. It adds a lift motor, limit switches and a blower to the usual burners or elements. Those parts need their own service, especially grease cleaning.
Can an older Maytag-era Jenn-Air cooktop still be repaired?
Often. Many igniters, switches and elements are still available or have substitutes. Some control parts and lift motors for older models are discontinued. We check your model number against parts availability before we recommend spending money on it. Pre-2006 units usually carry the hyphenated Jenn-Air badge.
