Miele cooktops
Miele induction cooktops speak a precise language: an F on a zone display for a soiled control field, FE codes with numbers for electronics faults - and Miele's own service literature maps them to specific boards and sensors. Gas KM tops stay mechanical. Either way, the diagnosis follows the factory's book, not the internet's.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
Current US induction tops, up to the full-surface flagships with PowerFlex zones.
Sealed-burner gas tops with electric ignition - no codes by design.
Element modules that pair induction, gas and specialty units in one run.
Earlier platforms like the KM 5773 - the generation Miele's public service manuals document in detail.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Pan material and diameter first - induction is honest physics before it is electronics.
Supply, then filter and control electronics - the FE 30/31 path with a meter.
Power module and zone sensor - localized by the code when present.
Moisture and cap seating - dry and reseat before parts.
Stop using the top; ceran replacement is quoted honestly against unit value.
Thermal management doing its job versus a failing sensor - split by testing.
Series and model numbers
Miele identifies machines by model and fabrication number - and on induction tops, the generation decides which fault-code table the service data uses.
Model label
The data plate is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; Miele also ships a duplicate data sticker with the documents folder. The fabrication number is what service and parts run on. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Miele diagnostics
The FE table comes from Miele's own technical documentation for its induction platform, with FE31 additionally confirmed on Miele USA's support portal. Gas KM tops publish no codes - and none are invented for them.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Miele cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Miele links its FE44 overheating fault to dust on the induction cooling fan. In Poway, dust is everywhere: horse trails, dirt roads and the ash from past fire seasons. Pet hair adds to it. The city's hot season runs from about July to late September, and a Miele induction top in a warm kitchen has less room to shed heat. Gas models on rural properties may run on propane. We repair Miele cooktops in Green Valley, Old Coach Estates, The Grove and across Poway.
An induction cooktop is a heat source and an electronics box at the same time. Miele's design pulls air through a fan under the glass to cool the boards. If that fan clogs with dust or hair, the cooktop reports FE44 and shuts down zones. Poway has more than 78 miles of trails where horses have priority, plus arenas and unpaved roads, and fine dust makes its way into kitchens. The Cedar Fire in 2003 and the Witch Creek Fire in 2007 both led to evacuations in parts of the city, and ash from any smoke event settles in cabinets and fans. Heat also matters. August highs average around 84°F, and hot days climb far higher. On those afternoons, a kitchen may be warm enough that the cooling fan runs longer. Most homes here were built between 1970 and 1999, and remodels often place a Miele cooktop into older cabinet boxes with tight drawers. For gas models, some rural properties use propane, and Miele notes an empty LP cylinder as a reason burners don't light.
Symptom: Zones switch off and FE44 appears, often in summer. Cause: Dust, pet hair or ash coating the fan and airway under the cooktop. Fix: We clean the fan and air path; if the fan motor has failed, we replace it. Afterward, keep the drawer and cabinet below the cooktop free of dust and clutter.
Symptom: Clicking with no flame on all burners. Cause: Empty LP cylinder, closed gas valve, or an electronic safety that tripped. Fix: Check the tank and valve, then switch power off for a minute to reset. If it still fails, we test the igniters and module.
Symptom: High-pitched sound when cooking. Cause: Often normal with some cookware and the cooling fan; a dusty or failing fan can grind. Fix: We tell you what's normal and replace a failing fan. Buzzing from multi-layer pans is common and harmless. We listen with the cookware you normally use.
Symptom: 'u_' on the display. Cause: Non-magnetic or undersized cookware. Fix: Magnet test and correct pan size. Many older pans used on gas don't work on induction. A magnet test takes seconds and costs nothing. If a proper pan still fails, we test the coil.
Vacuum the space under an induction cooktop every two to three months, and right after smoke events. Homes with dogs, cats or horses should check monthly. Keep drawer contents away from the fan. For propane homes, keep an eye on the tank level. Clean gas burner caps and igniters after spills. Wipe the glass top daily, since grit under a pan can scratch it. Sweep the floor near the cabinet too, since dust gets pulled up into the fan. A crevice tool on the vacuum reaches the fan area easily.
Most homes have driveway parking. Estate properties may have gates or long private roads, so share codes and directions. Please secure pets. Empty the cabinet or drawer under the cooktop. Have the model number, the code shown, and a photo of the display. For propane homes, tell us the tank level. The technician will clean the fan area if needed, test the electronics or ignition, and explain the repair and cost before starting. Tell us if the fault began after a smoke event.
Fans, igniters and resets are inexpensive and usually worth doing. A power board on an older induction model costs more, and replacement depends on the cutout and age. Our $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair. If the cooktop fits a custom stone cutout, repair saves the cost of changing the countertop. A fan clogged with dust is a much cheaper fix than a new top, so start with cleaning.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially: the control field is soiled or covered - liquid, a cloth, a pan edge. Clean and dry the panel and switch the top on again; a persistent F is a touch-electronics visit.
Miele's electronics dialect - the number localizes the fault, from sensor soiling (FE 01-25) to specific power modules (FE 43-45). We diagnose per the factory table.
On the underside of the top, from the cabinet below - or on the duplicate data sticker in your documents folder. The fabrication number matters most.
No - they are mechanical with electric ignition, and diagnosis is direct: electrodes, valves, caps.
Usually yes - the FE dialect localizes faults to specific modules, which makes repairs targeted rather than exploratory.
FE44 is an overheating fault. Miele links it to a blocked or dusty cooling fan, drawer contents under the cooktop, or unsuitable cookware. Clean the space below and let the cooktop cool. If it returns, the fan may need replacement.
First, check that the propane tank isn't empty and the valve is open. Then switch off power for one minute to reset the electronics. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 9-1-1 from outside. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off. For propane, call your propane supplier.
Some hum or buzz is normal with certain cookware, especially layered pans, and from the cooling fan. A grinding sound or a fan that runs constantly suggests a problem. We can tell the difference on-site. If the hum is new, record it on your phone so we can hear it.
Ash and fine particles settle in the cabinet and on the cooling fan. After a smoke event, vacuum the space under the cooktop. If FE44 appears, have us clean the fan. Keep drawer contents away from the fan area as well.
