Cafe cooktops
Café cooktops wear the brass and copper knobs, but the service story is GE's: induction models flash documented letter pairs - E-o for overheating, E-c for a stuck keypad - and a flashing power level means the pan, not the cooktop. Gas and radiant Café tops stay largely mechanical, which keeps their diagnosis direct and their repairs honest.
A photo of the model label and the complete installation helps the team understand the configuration before the visit.
30 and 36-inch touch-control induction with glide controls and kitchen timers.
Sealed-burner gas cooktops with the customizable knob hardware.
Smoothtop radiant models - element-and-switch machines at heart.
Brushed brass, copper, black and stainless knob kits - cosmetic, but part-number-relevant.
Start with the symptom
A symptom narrows the inspection; it does not identify the failed component. The $99 visit confirms the actual fault on the exact model before any repair is authorized.
Cookware first - magnetic, flat, right-sized - then zone electronics.
Moisture and cap seating, then the spark module - dried and tested in order.
The E-o pattern - empty-pan heat or starved cooling air under the counter.
Element and switch continuity - a direct answer.
The E-c pattern - spills and standing water before any board is blamed.
Stop using the top; replacement is quoted honestly against the cooktop's value.
Series and model numbers
Induction speaks in documented flashes; gas and radiant speak through symptoms - knowing which dialect you own is half the booking.
Model label
The model and serial label is on the underside of the cooktop, reached from the cabinet below; gas models may also carry it under the burner box lip. Photograph the full label. Photograph the complete label — the full model and serial identify parts and production year better than the series name alone.
Indicators and alerts
For any message not shown, use the manual for the exact model rather than a generic list.
Cafe diagnostics
The E-o and E-c meanings and the pan-detection behavior are documented in GE's official support material and owner literature. Longer 'Café cooktop code' lists online recycle other GE platforms and are excluded - anything unusual on the display is read against GE service data for the exact model.
Preventive service and owner care
Alpha Pro provides preventive and general maintenance for Cafe cooktops. The appliance design determines which procedures are accessible and appropriate.
Owner maintenance
Professional maintenance
A professional visit can evaluate accessible systems without assuming every procedure applies to every model.
Diagnosis before parts
Call or book with the model label, exact behavior, any displayed codes, photos, and access notes.
The technician examines the reported condition in context: ignition or zone behavior, controls, surfaces, installation, and relevant components.
Findings and proposed work are explained before repair proceeds. The residential diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.
Service area and operating context
Poway sits in the hills off I-15 - ranch properties of Old Poway, gated Green Valley, newer streets off Espola Road. Garage refrigerators fight summer heat, canyon dust clogs condensers, and hard water leaves scale in ice makers and washer valves.
Inland heat and hard water set the pattern here: garage refrigerators work hardest in summer, dust clogs condensers, and scale builds in ice makers, dishwashers and washer valves.
During maintenance, accessible metal surfaces can be inspected for corrosion, moisture exposure, or conditions that may warrant attention. Location alone does not establish the cause of a failure.
A better repair decision
There is no honest universal age or price threshold. Start with the exact model and a diagnosis.
Local notes · Poway
Poway kitchens sit in an inland valley where August highs average about 84°F and the hot season runs from early July to late September. Air that comes off trails and horse properties carries dust, and the city has been evacuated for wildfires twice, in 2003 and 2007. A Café cooktop here faces heat under the glass, grit in the burner ports and ash after a smoke event. We repair Café induction, radiant and gas cooktops in Green Valley, Old Poway, the Grove and the rest of the city.
Poway stays warm and dry for much of the year, and humid days are rare. For a Café induction cooktop, the concern is the generator board under the glass. It relies on a small fan pulling cool air from the cabinet, and a warm house means warmer intake air. Long canning sessions or searing on high in August push a weak fan past its limit. Santa Ana winds from September through April carry fine dust into open windows and onto every surface. On gas tops, dust mixes with grease and plugs the small ports around each burner. Poway calls itself the City in the Country, with more than 78 miles of trails where horses have priority. Barn and arena dust comes indoors on clothes and boots. After the Cedar and Witch Creek fires, homes dealt with ash for weeks, and any future smoke event would do the same to burner ports and cooling vents. Most houses were built between 1970 and 1999, and many have been remodeled. Large four-bedroom family homes also mean the cooktop gets daily use.
Symptom: A zone turns off during long cooking, power drops on its own, or an F-code appears. Cause: The generator board is overheating because the cooling fan is weak or the vents are clogged with dust. Fix: We clean the air path, test the fan and board, and replace whichever part has failed.
Symptom: Uneven, yellow or sputtering flames. The simmer setting goes out. Cause: Dust, ash or grease partly blocks the ports, and the gas-air mix goes wrong. Fix: We clear the ports, clean the orifice area, seat the caps and reset the low-flame screw if needed.
Symptom: One burner won't light while the others click normally. Cause: A cracked electrode, a tip coated with grease and dust, or a failed switch on that burner. The module is rarely at fault when other burners spark. Fix: We replace the electrode or switch and test spark on every burner position.
Symptom: A crack in the glass, or one radiant zone never glows. Cause: Impact or thermal shock for the glass. A burned element or failed limiter for a dead zone. Fix: We replace the glass top assembly or the element and confirm heat output.
In Poway, dust is the everyday enemy and heat is the seasonal one. Clean burner parts more often during Santa Ana season and after windy days. For induction, check the vents under the cooktop and clean them with a vacuum brush, since dust on the fan and heat sink cuts cooling. After any smoke or ash event, wipe the whole top and clean the ports before cooking. If your family cooks every day, plan a deeper cleaning every few weeks.
Most Poway homes have driveways and easy parking. On rural and equestrian properties, give us gate codes and tell us about dogs or horses near the drive. Have the model and serial number ready from the label under the cooktop or on the burner box, along with the fuel type. Tell us what happens and when: a code at startup, a zone quitting after 20 minutes, or a burner that won't light. If you smell gas, go outside, call SDG&E, and wait before calling us.
Many Poway kitchens have been updated, so a Café cooktop there is often newer than the house. Fans, electrodes, switches and burner parts are easy repairs. A generator board or a cracked glass top costs more, and on an older model it's worth weighing against a replacement that fits the same cutout. After the $99 diagnostic, which is credited to the repair, you'll have a clear price.

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.
A 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty, both starting on the date the repair is completed.
No. A symptom narrows the search, but the diagnostic visit on the exact model confirms the actual fault before any repair is authorized.
Officially: overheating of the element or electronics - often an empty pan on high, or blocked cooling air beneath the top. Let it cool 20-45 minutes and clear the air inlet; if it recurs under normal use, book the visit.
Pan detection: the cookware is not magnetic or is too small for the zone. Test with a magnet - if it grips the pan base firmly and the flash continues, the zone needs diagnosis.
No - they are mechanical with electric ignition. Diagnosis is direct: igniters, spark module, valves and caps.
On the underside of the cooktop from the cabinet below. GE parts need the full model including the suffix, so photograph the label.
Yes - the customizable hardware kits carry their own part numbers, and the model label makes ordering exact.
Café induction tops protect their electronics. When the generator board gets too hot, the cooktop lowers power or shuts off. A dusty fan, blocked vents or pans stored against the vents can cause it. Clean the vents first. If it keeps happening in normal use, the fan or board needs testing.
Let the cooktop cool, then remove the grates and caps. Wash the caps in warm, soapy water and dry them fully. Clear each port with a straight pin or a thin wire, never a toothpick, which can break off. Wipe the electrodes and the surface. If burners won't light afterward, call us.
Fine dust from barns, arenas and dirt trails comes inside on clothes and through open windows. On a cooktop, it mixes with grease and settles in burner ports and induction vents. It isn't a crisis, but homes near trails and horse properties generally need cleaning more often.
We repair both. Pro-style gas rangetops share the same ignition parts, burner designs and valve setup as Café gas cooktops, and many of the same faults, so the diagnosis follows the same steps. We also repair Café ranges, ovens and other appliances throughout Poway.
