Local notes · San Diego County
Café is the customizable, high-end line from GE Appliances, which Haier has owned since 2016. The customizable handles and finishes are its own, but the engineering underneath is shared with GE and GE Profile: the same refrigerator defrost logic, the same oven F-code table, the same dishwasher leak sensing. That is good news for owners. It means a Café fault can usually be read precisely from its code, and many parts are shared across the GE family. The details that set Café apart, like the Keurig brewer and French-door wall oven, get their own attention.
Several Café features depend on water, and county water is hard nearly everywhere. City of San Diego plants reported 237 to 243 mg/L in 2025 and Cal Am Coronado 236 mg/L, while Otay customers in the South Bay sit near 9.4 gpg. Minerals collect in the refrigerator's hot-water tank that feeds the built-in Keurig brewer, in the ice maker's fill valve, and in the dishwasher's inlet screen. Climate splits the county in two. Along the coast, the marine layer brings damp mornings from May into August; more humidity means more frost load on the refrigerator evaporator and more defrost cycles, so a defrost fault shows up faster. Inland, La Mesa averages an August high of 85.9 F and El Cajon 88.6 F, and a Café range's control electronics sit close to the heat of long bakes and self-clean. September heat waves add grid stress: SDG&E set a record peak on Sept 8, 2024, and power sags during events like that can upset refrigerator main boards and leave ice makers partly thawed; a PF on the display simply means power was interrupted.
Symptom: dE on the display, frost on the rear freezer panel, crisper produce freezing. Cause: GE French-door defrost logic relies on an evaporator thermistor. When it drifts, the heater and fans may test fine yet defrost timing goes wrong. Fix: We test heater, fans and thermistor, then replace the drifting sensor and clear the ice. Water in the bin or a CI code points instead to the fill tube or a clogged drain.
Symptom: Igniter glows, oven never reaches temperature, or ignition takes minutes. Cause: A weak hot-surface igniter no longer draws enough current to open the oven safety valve. Fix: Amperage test and igniter replacement. While we are there, we confirm the anti-tip bracket is secure, since some 2021 Café slide-ins were included in a CPSC tip-over recall; check that recall on cpsc.gov or the manufacturer site.
Symptom: One door sags or the pair won't open together; F9 or FC lock codes. Cause: Wear or misadjustment in the linkage coupling the two doors; a failed lock motor or switch after self-clean. Fix: Adjust or replace the linkage and hinges, or the lock assembly, then verify the control reads the lock correctly.
Symptom: Cycle stops with a leak alert and water sits in the base. Cause: A small amount of water in the base pan from the door gasket, a hose, a pump seal or suds trips the sensor. A heavier custom handle can also change door balance and spring tension. Fix: Locate and repair the source, dry the pan, and adjust door springs if the handle upset the balance.
Café appliances reward regular filter changes and descaling more than most, because so many of their premium features run on water. The hot-water and brewer circuit in particular scales in hard-water districts. Run the dishwasher at least weekly; its pump seals stick when idle for a week or more, a real issue in vacation homes. Keep cooktop spills off the knob area, and avoid back-to-back self-clean cycles, which put heat stress on locks and controls.
Café model numbers start with C (for example CFE28 or C2S950), and the rating label sits inside the refrigerator on the side wall, on the dishwasher door edge, and on the oven frame or behind the drawer. Photograph the label and any code. If your oven shows a code, GE suggests switching the breaker off for a minute or two; note whether the code returns. For gated communities, share entry instructions in advance. If you have custom handles or panels, mention them so the technician brings the right tools.
Café appliances cost more than standard GE models, and most of their failures are component-level: thermistors, igniters, lock motors, valves and seals. Those are repair jobs, and many parts are shared across GE Appliances brands. Replacement enters the conversation when an inverter compressor drive and main board fail together on an older refrigerator, or when the tub or control of an aging dishwasher fails. Custom finishes don't change the math but can affect panel availability.
