Kearny Mesa & Serra Mesa coverage
Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa family homes run practical, hard-working appliance sets - proven platforms, fast parts, straightforward repairs.
Central San Diego mixes condos, high-rises and mid-century homes: building access, compact formats and remodel-era installations shape the visit as much as the appliance.
Typical repair pricing
Estimated dryer repair pricing for common work in standard installations. The exact scope and total are confirmed after diagnosis and before authorized repair work begins.
$99 residential diagnostic fee: non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost when you proceed. Parts, model, installation, access and the confirmed repair scope can change the final total.

This parent page helps route a dryer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model and installation.
Describe the earlier cycle, load and whether heat was expected. Long drying or wet clothes alone does not establish the failed component.
Note the earlier button, display and drum response. Do not repeat a cycle, reach into the drum or bypass a door switch to demonstrate the concern.
Describe whether the door closed, latched and stayed closed, and at what point the earlier cycle stopped or changed.
Note when the sound occurs and where it seems to come from. A sound alone does not establish the failed component.
Photograph the complete display and share the exact model. Do not include account passwords or assume a code has the same meaning across models.
Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the dryer. Do not move stacked equipment or touch power, gas or exhaust connections.
San Diego installations
San Diego homes mix three dryer configurations, and the configuration changes both the likely service scope and the parts involved. Identify yours from paperwork or a safely visible label before the visit.
The most common configuration in San Diego condos and newer homes. Heating elements and thermal fuses are the usual heat-related repair path.
Dries faster per cycle and is common in older single-family homes. Igniters, gas valve coils and thermocouples are brand- and model-specific parts.
Frequent in coastal condos and ADUs without an exterior vent. Sealed-system work on these models is quoted separately after diagnosis.
The U.S. Fire Administration reports about 2,900 home clothes-dryer fires each year, and failure to clean the dryer is the leading contributing factor. Long vent runs common in multi-story San Diego buildings make full exhaust-path cleaning part of the service conversation.
Safe owner checks
Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. Do not use the dryer, operate switches or return to demonstrate the concern.
Stop using the dryer. If there is a fire, get out, stay out and call 911 from a safe location. Do not run another cycle to reproduce the problem.
Models and maintenance
A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.
Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the dryer, removing panels or reaching near wiring, gas or exhaust connections.
Follow the matching owner guide for routine lint-filter and approved exterior care. Cleaning does not prove a dryer is safe after a fault.
Do not disconnect exhaust, move stacked equipment or change a gas or electrical connection. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.
Our Work

The visit establishes the proposed repair scope. Review the estimate before authorizing work.
Work proceeds after approval. Any new scope requires separate approval before it is added.
Display messages
No verified production dryer error-code library is linked from this parent page. Keep the complete message with the model label; do not transfer a definition or reset instruction between brands or models.

In interior laundry closets the vent is often long with several elbows, and lint builds along it. A dirty moisture sensor or a ventless unit with a clogged condenser can also stretch cycles. We check airflow at the dryer and the exhaust before replacing parts.
No. Manufacturer install guides call for rigid or semi-rigid metal only, never plastic or foil. Foil sags, traps lint and crushes easily when the dryer is pushed back, which restricts airflow and raises fire risk. Metal duct also survives heat far better.
A fuse blows because exhaust temperature went too high, almost always from restricted airflow. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again. We clean or correct the vent and then replace the fuse. A thermostat may also be failing.
Instead of pushing air outside, they remove moisture with a condenser or heat pump and send water to a drain or tank. Lint in that path and clogged drains are the common issues. Many need filter cleaning after every load.
Local notes · Kearny Mesa
A dryer is an air pump with a heater attached. It pulls room air past the element or burner, through the load and out the vent. If the air cannot leave, heat builds, thermostats cycle and the thermal fuse eventually blows. On Kearny Mesa, the vent is the part we inspect first, because the area's new mid-rise buildings and its older single-family homes create very different vent problems. We repair gas and electric dryers from Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung and GE.
The mixed-use apartments going up under the 2020 community plan often stack laundry in an interior closet, far from an outside wall. That can mean a long exhaust duct with several elbows, or a ventless condensing or heat-pump dryer that sends moisture to a drain instead. Long runs collect lint along every foot and every bend. A typical install guide caps a 4-inch rigid metal vent at 64 feet in a straight line and allows less for each elbow. When an interior-closet dryer takes two cycles, the duct is the usual suspect, not the heater. In Stonecrest, Kearny Lodge and Royal Highlands, dryers more often sit in a garage with a shorter vent, but the transition hose behind the machine gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back. Weather adds load. The mesa sees about ten Santa Ana days a year, hot and always dry, and garage air on a 98 F September afternoon starts the dryer near its high-limit margin. Lint is also fuel: USFA data from 2008 to 2010 lists failure to clean as the leading factor in residential dryer fires, at 34 percent. Pet households fill lint screens and ducts faster.
Symptom: Clothes still damp after a full cycle, a hot laundry closet, a check-vent light, then no heat at all. Cause: Lint buildup in a long or kinked duct, a crushed foil transition hose, or a stuck exterior hood flap. Fix: Clean the full run, replace flexible foil with rigid or semi-rigid metal, then replace the fuse. A new fuse alone just blows again.
Symptom: The drum turns but the air stays cool; the igniter may glow without lighting a flame, or not glow at all. Cause: Weak igniter, failed gas valve coils or flame sensor. Fix: Test and replace the failed part. If you ever smell gas, leave the home and call SDG&E from outside before anything else.
Symptom: Very long cycles, damp loads, condenser or filter warnings. Cause: Lint in the condenser or heat-pump path, a clogged condensate drain, or a load bigger than the drying capacity. Fix: Clean filters and condenser passages, clear the drain line and set load size to the drying rating.
Symptom: Rhythmic thump, squeal on startup, burning-rubber smell. Cause: Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, belt or glides; heavy use speeds wear. Fix: Replace the worn rollers, idler, belt and glides as a kit so the drum runs true and quiet again.
Clean the lint screen before or after every load and wash it now and then if you use dryer sheets, since residue blinds the mesh and coats moisture sensor bars. NFPA advises cleaning the vent annually; Whirlpool says every one to two years or sooner when drying slows. In interior-closet apartments, ask management when the building's dryer ducts were last cleaned.
Tell us whether the dryer is gas or electric, vented or ventless, and where it sits. For garages, clear space to pull the dryer forward. For apartments, share building access, parking and whether the vent connects to a shared chase that management maintains; we can clean the duct we can reach and tell you if the rest needs the building's vendor. Have the model and serial from the door frame or back panel, and photos of the vent connection.
Most dryer repairs fall in the low to middle tier: fuses, thermostats, igniters, elements, belts and rollers. With lifespans typically cited at 10 to 13 years, a dryer usually earns repair until the motor or control board fails on an older unit. Fix the vent at the same time, or the new part will be stressed just like the old one.
