Service scope

Start with the appliance you have and the behavior you see.

This parent page helps route a dryer request. A symptom, feature name or brand link does not by itself identify a failed part or confirm support for every model and installation.

Heat and drying

Describe the earlier cycle, load and whether heat was expected. Long drying or wet clothes alone does not establish the failed component.

Starting and drum movement

Note the earlier button, display and drum response. Do not repeat a cycle, reach into the drum or bypass a door switch to demonstrate the concern.

Door and cycle behavior

Describe whether the door closed, latched and stayed closed, and at what point the earlier cycle stopped or changed.

Noise and vibration

Note when the sound occurs and where it seems to come from. A sound alone does not establish the failed component.

Display or connectivity

Photograph the complete display and share the exact model. Do not include account passwords or assume a code has the same meaning across models.

Gas, electric or heat-pump configuration

Use existing paperwork or a safely visible label to identify the dryer. Do not move stacked equipment or touch power, gas or exhaust connections.

San Diego installations

Know your dryer type.

San Diego homes mix three dryer configurations, and the configuration changes both the likely service scope and the parts involved. Identify yours from paperwork or a safely visible label before the visit.

Electric (240 V)

The most common configuration in San Diego condos and newer homes. Heating elements and thermal fuses are the usual heat-related repair path.

Gas

Dries faster per cycle and is common in older single-family homes. Igniters, gas valve coils and thermocouples are brand- and model-specific parts.

Heat-pump and ventless condenser

Frequent in coastal condos and ADUs without an exterior vent. Sealed-system work on these models is quoted separately after diagnosis.

Lint and airflow are a fire-safety matter.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports about 2,900 home clothes-dryer fires each year, and failure to clean the dryer is the leading contributing factor. Long vent runs common in multi-story San Diego buildings make full exhaust-path cleaning part of the service conversation.

USFA on dryer fires

Safe owner checks

Useful details—without opening, moving or resetting the dryer.

See, hear or smell signs of a gas leak?

Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343. Do not use the dryer, operate switches or return to demonstrate the concern.

SDG&E guidance

Smoke, fire, sparking or a burning smell?

Stop using the dryer. If there is a fire, get out, stay out and call 911 from a safe location. Do not run another cycle to reproduce the problem.

USFA safety guidance
  • Note the earlier cycle, load, heat result, elapsed time and any displayed message.
  • Photograph the full display message and the complete model/serial label only if safely visible.
  • Share whether the unit is known to be gas, electric or heat-pump, and whether a move, installation change, power interruption or prior service preceded the concern.
  • Do not remove panels, touch wiring, adjust a gas valve, disconnect exhaust, enter diagnostic modes or move stacked equipment.
  • For routine use, follow the matching owner guide for lint-filter care. Cleaning does not prove a dryer is safe after a fault.

Models and maintenance

Use the complete model label—then keep maintenance model-safe.

A model-family name alone does not establish parts, code meanings or repair eligibility. Share the complete label and installation details before model-specific guidance is used.

Find the model label safely

Photograph the complete model and serial label only when it is visible without moving the dryer, removing panels or reaching near wiring, gas or exhaust connections.

Keep lint-filter care model-safe

Follow the matching owner guide for routine lint-filter and approved exterior care. Cleaning does not prove a dryer is safe after a fault.

Protect airflow and installation

Do not disconnect exhaust, move stacked equipment or change a gas or electrical connection. Share known access and installation details when scheduling.

Before requesting service

Helpful dryer-service questions.

Does the $99 residential diagnostic fee always apply?

Yes. It is non-refundable and credited toward the total repair cost if you proceed. There are no residential exceptions.

Do you service my street in La Mesa?

We take requests across La Mesa (ZIP 91941, 91942). Share gate codes, parking or building access when booking so the technician can plan the visit.

Should I reset a dryer after a display message?

Do not use a general page as a model-specific reset guide. Keep the exact display message and complete model label for the service discussion.

Should I run another cycle after a burning smell?

No. Stop using the dryer. If there is smoke or fire, get out, stay out and call 911 from a safe location.

Should I disconnect the dryer or move stacked equipment?

No. Leave electrical, gas and exhaust connections intact. Describe the installation and access without moving or unstacking equipment.

Does a brand link confirm support for my model?

No. The existing brand pages help route the request; the exact appliance, model, installation and requested scope still need confirmation.

Can I visit or arrange an appliance drop-off?

Visits are by appointment, and appliance drop-off is available by prior arrangement. Coordinate before arriving.

Why does my dryer keep blowing its thermal fuse?

The fuse is a safety device that opens when the dryer overheats. Replacing it without fixing the cause means it will blow again. In most cases the cause is a restricted vent: lint buildup, a crushed duct or a blocked outside hood. We replace the fuse and check the full airflow path.

Can I put a new electric dryer on my old house's outlet?

Check first. Some mid-century homes have older circuits, ungrounded outlets or a dryer circuit sized for an older appliance. The new dryer's installation guide lists the required circuit. If the outlet or wiring doesn't match, have an electrician update it before connecting the new unit.

How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?

Signs include loads that take longer than they used to, a hot laundry room, clothes that are hot but damp, a burning smell or a check-vent message. Go outside while the dryer runs: the hood flap should open with strong airflow. Weak flow means a restriction somewhere in the run.

Is it safe to use a dryer with a gas smell?

No. Stop using it, leave the house, and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 9-1-1 from outside. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off. Once the utility has cleared the area, we can diagnose the dryer's gas valve, igniter and connections.

Dryer Repair for La Mesa's Older Homes

A dryer is only as good as the duct behind it. Most La Mesa houses were built between 1940 and 1999, and many laundry areas were added to garages, service porches or converted closets long after the house was framed. The result is often a vent that runs far, turns several times, or gets crushed behind the machine. Air that can't leave the drum takes moisture and heat with it too slowly. We repair gas and electric dryers from Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung and GE and check the vent on every call.

Mid-Century Floor Plans and Dryer Airflow

About 44% of La Mesa homes date from 1940 to 1969 and another 43% from 1970 to 1999. Houses from that first era often weren't designed with a dryer location, so laundry landed wherever there was room, sometimes on an interior wall far from an outside exit. Long duct runs with extra elbows, old foil or vinyl transition hoses and ducts flattened when the dryer was pushed back are common findings. Each restriction slows airflow through the drum. The dryer then runs longer, its high-limit thermostat and thermal fuse see more heat, and lint settles inside the duct instead of leaving the house. Lint and failure to clean are the leading contributing factor in U.S. dryer fires, at 34% in USFA data. Electrical supply is the other mid-century concern. Some older homes have 2-prong or ungrounded outlets and undersized dryer circuits, which matter when a new electric dryer replaces an old gas unit or a larger machine goes in. On the gas side, supply connectors and shutoff valves in these homes may be decades old. Apartment dryers bring their own pattern: stacked units in closets with limited make-up air and vent paths that are hard to reach.

Dryer Failures Rooted in Airflow and Age

Long dry times from vent restriction

Symptom: Clothes need two cycles, the laundry room gets hot, or a check-vent message appears. Cause: Lint buildup in a long run, a crushed transition duct behind the dryer, or a stuck or blocked exterior hood. Fix: Clean the full vent run, replace foil or plastic ducts with rigid or semi-rigid metal, and shorten or straighten the path where possible.

No heat after a blown thermal fuse

Symptom: The drum turns but the air stays cool. Cause: A thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat opened because hot air couldn't escape; on electric models the element may also be open, on gas models the igniter or valve coils. Fix: Test and replace the failed part, then fix the airflow problem so the new fuse doesn't blow again.

Thumping or squealing drum

Symptom: A rhythmic thump or a high squeal when the drum turns. Cause: Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, belt or glides. Rollers can flat-spot when a dryer sits unused. Fix: Replace the worn support parts as a set and check the belt tension.

Clothes over-dried or still damp on auto cycles

Symptom: Auto-dry ends early or runs too long. Cause: Fabric softener residue coating the moisture sensor bars or lint screen. Fix: Clean the sensor bars and wash the lint screen with warm soapy water; replace the sensor if it tests faulty.

Vent Care That Prevents Most Dryer Calls

Clean the lint screen before or after every load. NFPA recommends cleaning the vent annually, and Whirlpool suggests every one to two years, sooner if drying slows. Homes with dogs or cats produce more lint per load, so shorten the interval. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct only, never plastic or foil, and keep the run as short and straight as the house allows. If you smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the house and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 9-1-1 from outside before anything else.

  • Empty the lint screen every load
  • Have the full vent run cleaned yearly, every 6 months with pets or heavy use
  • Check that the outside hood flap opens freely while the dryer runs
  • Replace any foil or vinyl transition hose with metal duct
  • Wash the lint screen with soapy water every few months if you use softener sheets

Getting Ready for Dryer Service

Clear space so we can pull the dryer away from the wall and reach the vent connection. If you know where the vent exits the house, whether through the roof, a side wall or under the eaves, tell us; it helps us plan. For stacked units in apartments, share the unit number and building access details. Have the model and serial number, found inside the door frame or on the back, and note whether it is gas or electric. Please don't try to test a 240-volt circuit or gas valve yourself.

When a Dryer Is Worth Fixing

Most dryer repairs, such as fuses, thermostats, igniters, elements, belts and rollers, are modest compared with a new machine, and dryers are often cited as lasting 10 to 13 years. Repair usually makes sense unless the drum, motor and control are failing together on an older unit. We credit the $99 diagnostic to the repair once you approve it. Fixing the vent at the same time protects the new parts.
